MANILA -- Students and professionals from Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines will face off in a "hackathon" or software contest that aims to weed out fake news on social media next month in Manila, organizers said Sunday. "We saw that there's a rich potential in technology, especially in the youth, with all their energy and their spirit in doing something about issues of national importance," said Gab Billones, co-founder of Break The Fake Movement, which hosts the hackathon bearing the same name. "We believe that we can do something to move a little on the issue of fake news as long as we make sure we do all our efforts to tap into this potential," he added. Fake news "hurts the unity of the country," Juan Dalisay of the start-up Social Resource Allocation said at the hackathon's launch at De La salle University. "By having a system that solves fake news from the source, which is the people themselves, hopefully the unity of the country will be put back together and we can … [Read more...] about ‘Hackathon’ eyes crackdown on fake news

And to demonstrate exactly how absurd the problem is, a new AI called Grover, developed by the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence and the University of Washington (and spotted by AI Weirdness), allows you to enter a headline, and it will generate hundreds of words of convincing, fake text that looks like it belongs in the New York Times or on CNN. Luckily for you, the researchers put Grover’s fake news generator online for anyone to try. And let me say, from personal experience, that it can create some doozies. For a test, I wrote the headline: “Why Donald Trump Eats 100 Cheeseburgers a Day.” This is an article that even I, a journalist, don’t know how I’d go about writing. It is, after all, a pure fiction. Grover, however, seems to relish the challenge: “In an interview this year with Dr. Phil McGraw, the television host, Trump told his story of becoming a self-described ‘buffet freak’ after watching the Jamie … [Read more...] about This AI generates fake news about anything you want. Earlier this month, a video clip surfaced on Instagram of Mark Zuckerberg delivering a short, troubling speech. In it, he touched on Facebook’s foreboding power and argued that control of data means control of the future. There was only one problem: The video wasn’t real. It was a “deepfake” otherwise known as a video depicting someone’s likeness to show something that didn’t actually happen. The Zuckerberg clip was just the latest in a string of recent deepfakes circulating online. It was created by two artists who also generated one of Kim Kardashian. It’s getting easier by the day to produce deepfakes, as well as to share them. Earlier this year, President Trump also made headlines when he tweeted a doctored video of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi stammering through a news conference. Consequently, Congress recently held a hearing to discuss the threat. This is just the latest indicator of the “post-trust era.” The term was coined … [Read more...] about This is how to fight fake news at work in a post-trust era
Twitter has purchased a U.K.-based company in order to help it crack down on the amount of fake news that is spread on its platform. Twitter announced the acquisition of Fabula AI in a blog post, saying the company’s approach to using machine learning to catch fake news was “novel”: We are excited to announce that, to help us get there, we have acquired Fabula AI (Fabula), a London-based start-up, with a world-class team of machine learning researchers who employ graph deep learning to detect network manipulation. Graph deep learning is a novel method for applying powerful ML techniques to network-structured data. The result is the ability to analyze very large and complex datasets describing relations and interactions, and to extract signals in ways that traditional ML techniques are not capable of doing. Twitter has been criticized for the amount of fake news and misinformation that easily spreads on its platform. Though the company has taken steps to … [Read more...] about Twitter buys AI startup to help it fight fake news
The proliferation of fake news and hatred in social media platforms and online media did not end after the first simultaneous parliamentary and presidential elections in modern Indonesian history. The targets of these fake news stories and overt hatred are the general public. However, the creators of this content often have dangerous intentions when creating and spreading hoaxes and hate speech, as they seek to divide society. Those who become victims of fake news are not limited to ordinary citizens, but also public figures, including the country's elites and state officials. National Police Chief General Tito Karnavian has even become one of the victims of fake news and misinformation. The fake news sent through Facebook was entitled "HRS (Habib Rizieq Syihab) will conduct a people power; the police: we are ready to shoot on sight those disrupting the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia, though they are the grandchildren of Prophet". In response to this incident, the … [Read more...] about Fake news still challenges Indonesia’s post-election atmosphere
