Florida Supreme Court Asked To Consider Blocking 15-Week Abortion Ban After Appeals Court Lets It Stay In Place
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline Abortion rights advocates and providers asked the Florida Supreme Court to decide whether the state’s 15-week abortion ban should be blocked in court, after an appeals court allowed the ban to stay in effect—the first test of whether the court will overturn its decades-old precedent protecting abortion rights and let the state enact harsher bans. Key Facts The American Civil Liberties Union, Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers asked the Florida Supreme Court to consider a July ruling from a state appeals court, which allowed the ban to remain in effect as the litigation moves forward and denied a request to fast-track the case to the Supreme Court. The plaintiffs said the Florida Supreme Court has jurisdiction to review the ruling because it directly conflicts with its own precedent, as the state’s highest court ruled in 1989 that the Florida Constitution and its right to privacy protects … [Read more...] about Florida Supreme Court Asked To Consider Blocking 15-Week Abortion Ban After Appeals Court Lets It Stay In Place
Need a new AC? This smart air conditioner is powerful and efficient
Windmill wants to solve one of summer’s most intractable problems: the blight of ugly air conditioners. The New York-based startup launched in 2020 with a 10,000-person waitlist for its $415 smart AC, a sleek window unit that has more in common, design-wise, with Apple’s HomePods than the hulking air conditioners of yore. The first run of units sold out within 48 hours. advertisement advertisement This April, Windmill’s wifi-enabled air conditioners got a mini makeover with the reveal of a smaller $365 unit —a 6,000-BTU AC that cools up to 250-sq ft., which makes it ideal for a city apartment or office space. (Compared to the original 8.3k BTU $415 unit that we reviewed last year.) The line expansion arrives alongside the announcement of a $10 million fundraising round and the addition of Walmart to the direct-to-consumer brand’s list of big-box retailers, which already includes Home Depot and P.C. Richard & Son . Founded by Ryan … [Read more...] about Need a new AC? This smart air conditioner is powerful and efficient
4 Calendar Rules to Avoid Useless Meetings
As someone who has quite literally built a career out of efficiency, I have no patience for unproductive meetings . When meetings go off the rails, people show up unprepared, or something gets canceled at the last minute, I get frustrated. Time is valuable, and these situations are easily preventable. Over the years, I've learned a few tricks to help keep these situations from occurring in the first place. And more recently, I've encouraged my executive assistant to think in the same way, so she can take steps to ensure that each meeting I attend will be a good use of my time. If you have an executive assistant, I'd highly recommend teaching them these four methods. If not, you can do them on your own or even set up some automations that will handle some of the work for you. 1. No agenda, no meeting I have a simple rule with my team: No agenda, no meeting. These agendas should ideally be made in advance of the meeting, and shared with attendees so everyone can … [Read more...] about 4 Calendar Rules to Avoid Useless Meetings
Writers’ groups join outcry over KWF move
IT’S ONLY WORDS Images taken from the Facebook page of the SMNI network show two of the five book projects ordered terminated by the Komisyon ng Wikang Filipino (KWF), in a move denounced by academic and literary circles as well as some lawmakers as outright censorship. The highlighted texts purportedly show why the national language commission found the works “subversive.” The KWF is not the first government body, however, to go after publications that have already passed scholarly or editorial review but are now deemed dangerous for young Filipino minds. Some of the country’s most prominent writers’ groups are up in arms over the Komisyon ng Wikang Filipino’s (KWF) order to cease the publication and distribution of several titles it deemed to have “subversive” content. “It is alarming and we must be vigilant against the constant Red-tagging of writers and their books on a recent TV program,” according to the largest of the groups, the Unyon ng mga Manunulat ng Pilipinas (Umpil), … [Read more...] about Writers’ groups join outcry over KWF move
China’s security law a ‘serious risk’ to Hong Kong’s freedoms – UN experts
Geneva, Switzerland — China’s national security law for Hong Kong poses a serious risk to the city’s freedoms and breaches international legal obligations, UN special rapporteurs on human rights have warned. Beijing has faced a groundswell of criticism over the law, which was imposed in late June after pro-democracy protests rocked the semi-autonomous city last year. The law, which criminalizes secession, subversion, terrorism, and colluding with foreign forces, has intimidated and silenced many protesters. In the letter made public Friday the UN advisors warned parts of the legislation “appear to criminalize freedom of expression or any form of criticism” of China. “The National Security Law… poses a serious risk that those fundamental freedoms and due process protections may be infringed upon,” the rapporteurs said. The letter warned the legislation may “impinge impermissibly on the rights to freedom of opinion, expression and of peaceful assembly.” It called … [Read more...] about China’s security law a ‘serious risk’ to Hong Kong’s freedoms – UN experts
