Q&A: Does Secure 2.0 Go Far Enough To Really Expand Retirement Savings?

March 22, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The Saving Problem Secure 2.0 Aimed to Solve Secure 2.0 is a pension reform package passed at the end of last year with provisions to lower taxes on retirement savings for high earners and to expand coverage and retirement savings. At least, that was a hope. My colleague and I, Siavash Radpour, Research Director at the Schwartz Center for Economic Policy Analysis at The New School, unpacked the provisions to investigate how well Secure 2.0 will do to help those without an employer plan or significant levels of retirement savings. The sorry truth is that most, over 63 million workers , have no retirement plan that will supplement their Social Security. And the average holdings for the worker with a retirement account is about $100,000. What is the Savers Credit/Match in Secure 2.0 and how does it affect American workers’ retirement security? Before SECURE 2.0, the Savers’ Credit credited a low earners’ tax bill … [Read more...] about Q&A: Does Secure 2.0 Go Far Enough To Really Expand Retirement Savings?

Potential Student Loan Forgiveness Loophole Could Cause Problems And Confusion For Consolidating Borrowers

March 22, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The Biden administration is straining to enact multiple, overlapping student loan debt relief initiatives. This includes one-time student loan forgiveness initiatives and adjustments, as well as more lasting regulatory reforms that will transform a broad swath of the federal student loan system. But implementation of some initiatives is getting delayed due to budgetary constraints. And borrowers on track for at least some student debt relief programs may encounter significant confusion and serious problems if the Education Department does not clarify program rules and the interrelationship between one-time waivers and new, more permanent regulations that will go into effect later this year. This is particularly true for borrowers seeking student loan forgiveness through Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) and Income-Driven Repayment (IDR). Here’s what’s going on. Robust Phuket tourism numbers in Q4 last year and high winter season set the stage for recovery by year-end

March 23, 2023 by thethaiger.com

Significant uptick in Phuket’s hotel sector activity includes the opening of Radisson RED in Q3 2023 Press Release PHUKET Thailand’s leading resort island of Phuket’s post-pandemic tourism recovery has been headlined by a surge in Russian travellers in the high season. But the backstory is how a spike in regional visitors from India, Malaysia, and Singapore set the stage in Q4 of last year that pushed hotels and the service sector back into action. Data on hotel Phuket hotel performance in C9 Hotelworks’ newly released Phuket Hotel Market Update 2023 shows how the industry escalated after Thailand lifted travel restrictions at the beginning of October 2022. The influx of tourists propelled market-wide occupancy for the year to 48%, up year-on-year from a COVID-19-impacted low of 8% in 2021. While Phuket’s winter high season which is November through to March has seen a return of the island’s traditional ‘snowbird’ visitors from Northern Europe and Scandinavia, the … [Read more...] about Robust Phuket tourism numbers in Q4 last year and high winter season set the stage for recovery by year-end

The Need For Climate Risk Disclosures: A Case Study Of Physical Risk Of Two REITS, EQR And ARE

March 22, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Both REITs admit climate risk is a material risk factor in their 10Ks. Coastal Risk, a consulting firm, and I tried estimating such risk using publicly available data. We made some progress but could not go too far. We need rules on quantitative climate risk disclosures that would help investors bound such risks, contrary to claims that our current voluntary disclosure regime is adequate. Climate risk disclosures are arguably the most controversial development in the staid world of accounting and reporting in recent times. As a case study, consider the SEC’s proposed climate risk disclosure rule which is reported to have attracted over 14,000 comment letters. The proponents of more and useful disclosure (including me) argue that climate-induced physical and transition risks are real for many businesses, but the current state of required disclosure does not give investors enough information to get a reasonable handle on … [Read more...] about The Need For Climate Risk Disclosures: A Case Study Of Physical Risk Of Two REITS, EQR And ARE

PH exporters urged gov’t to address VAT exemption issue

March 22, 2023 by business.inquirer.net

MANILA, Philippines  – Three of the largest export trade associations in the country are urging the government to make good on its promise to resolve the issues concerning their zero value-added tax (VAT) rating incentive, saying they are still awaiting resolution less than two weeks before the given time. A joint statement released by the IT and Business Process Association of the Philippines (IBPAP), Semiconductor and Electronics Industries in the Philippines Foundation Inc. (SEIPI), and the Confederation Wearables Exporters of the Philippines (CONWEP) said that a solution has been promised by the end of the month, which also coincides with the end of the first taxable quarter. “The understanding of the sectors is that most of the government agencies involved in resolving the issue believe that there is clear basis for all purchases of exporters to be without the 12 percent VAT, given that this is not only allowed by the rules but is more importantly critical in ensuring that the … [Read more...] about PH exporters urged gov’t to address VAT exemption issue

HPE Grows GreenLake With OpsRamp Acquisition

March 21, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Let's think back to 2018, a time of nearly unbelievable growth in the public cloud. Cloud service providers (CSPs) benefited from a modern gold rush as businesses of every size migrated to an infrastructure that didn't require capital investment. Or even an electric bill. The cloud even became the profit center for Amazon, a multi-billion-dollar business. Cloud, as a business model, makes for easy accounting. Why buy a server when you can pay as you go? The downside is that workloads must move off-prem to be in the cloud, which has a certain amount of baggage. It also introduces a new tension between the CFO office and that of the CIO, as OpEx dollars are far easier to budget than CapEx. So isn't there a way to bring the public cloud's flexible business and operational models to on-prem computing? That's what the chief executive of Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Antonio Neri, asked his team to figure out. By 2017, all the … [Read more...] about HPE Grows GreenLake With OpsRamp Acquisition

Is Oracle Making ‘Best Of Breed’ Enterprise Apps A Thing Of The Past With Fusion?

March 22, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin As I listened to Oracle's recent industry analyst briefing on the future of Oracle Cloud Customer Experience (CX), Oracle's front-office software, I couldn't help wondering whether we have finally resolved the ongoing debate about seeking out best-of-breed applications for every function versus going with an integrated suite. I get this question across all my company’s advisory practices in software, services and yes, even hardware. It’s just a fact that the best-of-breed approach can become an integration effort, with a separate upgrade cadence for each software package—potentially followed by integration troubleshooting each time around. There really are no “magic APIs” for large enterprise apps. Enterprises need to weigh a potential order of magnitude value-add in a point product versus these challenges outlined above. I’m not saying it’s never worth it, but it better be. Oracle has a suite and issues software … [Read more...] about Is Oracle Making ‘Best Of Breed’ Enterprise Apps A Thing Of The Past With Fusion?

Why This Under-The-Radar Central American Destination Should Be On Your Travel List

March 22, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Belize, a small country in Central America, has flown under the radar for many travelers. But that’s about to change if the Honorable Anthony Mahler, Belize Minister of Tourism & Diaspora Relations, has anything to do with it. Belize, like many countries, is still recovering from the drastic economic downturn that occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic. “Regaining momentum for our tourism industry has required a lot of human and financial resources,” says Mahler, who was officially sworn in as Belize’s new Tourism Minister in 2020, but has a history with the Belize Tourism Board (BTB), having worked there for 12 years. “Our economy is small, so we cannot outspend larger destinations. Thankfully, our recovery has been positive and steady.” Focus on Sustainability One of the big focuses for the country is sustainability. “On the global scene, Belize has worked diligently to put in place all the requisite … [Read more...] about Why This Under-The-Radar Central American Destination Should Be On Your Travel List
