Strategies For Growth In 2023

March 23, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin By Duane Tursi, CEO, Ascension Group International . How can business leaders determine whether a particular growth strategy is applicable to a business’s specific situation? First and foremost, timing is everything. It might feel like it’s always the right moment to take your company to the next level, but knowing when to expand is just as critical as knowing where to start. During times of financial uncertainty, many companies focus on their core competencies and forget that there are still opportunities for development. The quality of businesses today is strong, and organizations of all sizes have healthy balance sheets despite a looming recession. To continue this upward trend, let’s take a look at some key strategies for growth in 2023. Never Waste A Recession You might look at that header and scratch your head, but here’s the thing: Recessions are not all negative. Why the SPLC’s new logo ditched its famous icon

March 22, 2023 by www.fastcompany.com

The Southern Poverty Law Center bankrupted the Ku Klux Klan and other hate groups through the power of the legal system—and so it might have come as a surprise when the organization recently unveiled its new logo, it was conspicuously lacking the scales of justice icon that had defined the organization for years. It was a change that no one on the project team took lightly—but the organization was committed to bold moves, and for good reason. “Historically, it’s been a law firm, it’s been a legal service for voting rights and civil rights and advocacy groups, but over time, it’s expanded into something that’s much more than that,” says Chris Mihal, SPLC’s director of creative. In 2022, the organization completed a new strategic framework focused on its four key offerings: law, education, policy, and programming, centered around the critical subjects of hate and extremism, children’s rights, economic justice, immigrant justice, LGBTQ rights, criminal justice reform, … [Read more...] about Why the SPLC’s new logo ditched its famous icon

POV: How work arrangements played a part in the collapse of Credit Suisse and SVB

March 22, 2023 by www.fastcompany.com

The world watched in shock as Credit Suisse, one of the most established global banking and financial services institutions, collapsed and was eventually acquired by UBS. I believe a significant factor in Credit Suisse’s downfall was its rigid stance on forcing staff to return to the office. This cautionary tale serves as a reminder for business leaders to adapt to the changing world of work and prioritize their workforce’s needs and preferences. The Iron Fist: Credit Suisse’s return to office policy In stark contrast to the growing trend of many companies embracing a flexible hybrid work approach, Credit Suisse took a more traditional approach, mandating that staff return to the office three days a week. According to one banker there, “they’re removing our flexibility, and it doesn’t feel great.” In May 2022, the bank’s leadership originally supported flexibility and hybrid work as evidenced by then-CEO Thomas Gottstein professing that a return to office was “not … [Read more...] about POV: How work arrangements played a part in the collapse of Credit Suisse and SVB

It’s time to get intentional about what day of the week you hold meetings

March 22, 2023 by www.fastcompany.com

Each year, Frank Weishaupt, CEO of the AI-powered video conferencing solution provider Owl Labs, reviews last year’s calendar to see how he spent his time. The exercise can uncover areas that need improvement so you can be proactive with your priorities, he says. “Planning your weeks is incredibly important,” says Weishaupt. “Look at your activities and determine whether those activities match your goals. It’s a constant evaluation and optimization. If you’re not taking the time to do that, you know, you’re probably not using your time wisely.” Going into 2023, he decided to dramatically change how he schedules meetings. His first step was to make sure he was holding the right meetings. For example, some meetings had become routine, but they didn’t make sense anymore. If you’re not sure whether a meeting is worth holding or not, Weishaupt suggests flushing your calendar and starting over. “Then think about everything that’s coming your way,” he says. “I purged the … [Read more...] about It’s time to get intentional about what day of the week you hold meetings

Forget about goal setting. Try these 5 strategies instead

October 14, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

Goal setting is one of those things that seems like it would be fundamental to success. If you’ve read any books or articles about getting ahead in your career or life, you’ve probably come across tips on setting goals (like SMART goal setting) so that you can successfully meet them. But setting goals may not be as relevant anymore, and there may be better alternatives to managing your career–and your life. Part of the reason goal setting may be becoming irrelevant is because of the speed of change and the volatility of the world. When everything is moving so fast and changing, the goals you set for yourself can become redundant. That said, it’s very powerful to imagine yourself succeeding in the future and focus on your preferred version of tomorrow. The key is to seek to be directionally accurate , knowing that things are constantly changing in a way you can’t always predict. Here are five effective ways to take charge of your career when you’re operating in … [Read more...] about Forget about goal setting. Try these 5 strategies instead

These are the top 10 most passive-aggressive phrases you’re probably using in email

October 21, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

More hybrid and remote work has increased our written communication, via email, IMs, DMs, and texting. The problem with these types of correspondence is that nonverbal cues, such as facial expressions and inflection, are missing, and the underlying tone of the message has to be inferred by the recipient. Unfortunately, the human brain naturally skews toward the negative . Your message may come across as aggressive, condescending, or just plain rude, when that was never your intent. It can be tricky to gauge someone’s tone through an email or Slack message. The team at WordFinder by Your Dictionary studied emails and found some commonly used workplace jargon and terms come across as passive-aggressive in writing. Whether it’s intentional or not, using them can make others uncomfortable, create tension, or even jeopardize your job. These 10 phrases were rated as seeming the most passive-aggressive: Please advise Noted Friendly Reminder Will do Thanks in … [Read more...] about These are the top 10 most passive-aggressive phrases you’re probably using in email

5 ways to cut down on meetings and make them more productive

November 3, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

There’s a common complaint in the workplace today: Employees’ schedules are often so packed with meetings that they have no time to do their actual jobs. Back in 2017, 71% of senior managers said that meetings were unproductive and inefficient; 65% reported that they got in the way of completing tasks. Since 2020, the problem has gotten worse. Research shows that with the rise of remote work, employees are spending more time in meetings and the workday has been extended by more than 45 minutes. This is unnecessary, and the good news is, it doesn’t have to be your team’s reality. I know this from experience. Running a $4-billion company with employees all around the world has forced me to rethink my approach to communication, and I encourage our leaders to do the same. By ensuring that every team has a deliberate, pared-down approach to meetings, we’ve increased productivity and boosted morale. Here are five strategies to help your team make the most of their … [Read more...] about 5 ways to cut down on meetings and make them more productive

Poe: Marcos order creating water management office a ‘timely intervention’

March 23, 2023 by newsinfo.inquirer.net

Senator Grace Poe MANILA, Philippines — The executive order from President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on the creation of Water Resource Management Office (WRMO) is a “timely intervention” that will boost action to address the rising water stress in the country, said Senator Grace Poe. Marcos earlier said that his directive for the establishment of WRMO had already been signed and would soon be released for implementation. Poe, chair of the upper chamber’s panel on public services, welcomed the move on Thursday as she noted that bills seeking a more integrated water policy in the country are still being deliberated upon in Congress. “This is a timely intervention from the executive branch which will hopefully alleviate the creeping water crisis in the country,” she said in a statement. The legislator lamented the irony of the Philippines being plagued by a water crisis despite being an archipelago – all because of “fragmented resource management.” “We expect that this … [Read more...] about Poe: Marcos order creating water management office a ‘timely intervention’

Duterte’s FOI order leads to ‘unintended consequences’

June 26, 2017 by newsinfo.inquirer.net

TRANSPARENCY POLICY President Duterte signs an executive order laying down his administration’s policy of full public disclosure and transparency in public service, but it does not cover the legislature, judiciary and even local governments. —MALACAÑANG PHOTO President Rodrigo Duterte’s issuance of an executive order on freedom of information (FOI) was a much-lauded move and a step in the right direction, but it has had “unintended consequences” that have not always led to greater transparency. Executive Order No. 2, signed on July 23, 2016, and implemented for about seven months now, has laid down a policy of full public disclosure and transparency in public service to promote accountability, and sets the guidelines for requesting and releasing information from offices under the executive branch. Subsequent issuances laid down exceptions to transparency and the administrative penalties for government officers who would not abide by these. Gomez says he convinced Romualdez to back con-ass to amend 1987 Constitution

March 23, 2023 by newsinfo.inquirer.net

Leyte Rep. Richard Gomez. FILE PHOTO MANILA, Philippines — Leyte Rep. Richard Gomez on Thursday said he convinced Speaker Martin Romualdez to support constitutional assembly (con-ass) as the mode of amending the 1987 Constitution. During a press briefing with the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) on Thursday, Gomez said he was able to convince Romualdez during a Party Leaders’ meeting on Tuesday. “When we reported to our Speaker, he said yes, kasi ang proseso ng House ‘pag hindi pareho yung hakbang namin, in this case nasa Con-con (constitutional convention) kami, ang Senate con-ass, ‘pag hindi pareho ‘yung lakbay namin magkikita naman sa bicam (bicameral conference), and then sa bicam they will come up with a resolution,” said Gomez when asked if the House would now support con-ass. (When we reported to our Speaker, he said yes, because the House process is if our steps are not the same, in this case, we are in con-con, the Senate con-ass, if the journey … [Read more...] about Gomez says he convinced Romualdez to back con-ass to amend 1987 Constitution
