This week the brand is unveiling a new marketing strategy that Stollak hopes will help do just that. It’s called “Converse All Stars,” and it aims to turn a worldwide network of young creators into a de facto internal creative shop for the brand. Across 27 cities, the roughly 3,000 individuals—from athletes to artists—will attend workshops, events, and generally have the ear of the brand on their ideas. This community is further distilled with the Captains, an annual class of 13 All Stars who will get a year’s worth of funding for their ideas along with mentorship across Converse’s network of business leaders and cultural ambassadors such as Issa Rae and Virgil Abloh. … [Read more...] about Kamala Harris made a splash in Converse. Few marques come with the sort of provenance that Land Rover does. Not because the brand essentially created the luxury SUV space with the Range Rover; not because it is a symbol of old money in a way few brands can hope to be. For Britain’s legendary carmaker, it all started with the Series I, born in 1948 before being rechristened the Defender and going on to become one of the most capable off-roading vehicles ever made. … [Read more...] about Why the all-new Land Rover Defender is the ultimate off-roader
My career in politics has been defined by everyone asking, “How big a coalition can we create?” Everybody is sacrificing something to be part of a larger movement, like the election. And then afterwards you go back to fighting for your agenda. That’s what is happening now. We’re building an intersectional infrastructure: I need to understand the asks of the immigration crisis community, I need to be able to carry water for the climate-change workers, for racial justice. First, the platform picked up Beastie Boys Story in late spring, once it was clear the film wouldn’t make it to theaters. Then it purchased the Tom Hanks World War II movie Greyhound from Sony for $70 million and released it in July, when dads everywhere sung its praises to the rafters. The company reportedly considered a $350 million to $400 million offer for the rights to stream Daniel Craig’s final James Bond film, No Time to Die, although MGM apparently was unwilling to accept anything lower than substantially more money. Apple TV Plus merely had to content viewers instead with the heady A24 documentary film, Boys State, and Sofia Coppola’s reunion with Bill Murray, On the Rocks. … [Read more...] about Apple TV Plus secretly won the streaming war of 2020. Here’s why
Much of the new science surrounding CRISPR Cas-9 has come from scientists with a stake in the intellectual property. Last year, David Liu, a scientist at the Broad Institute and cofounder of gene-editing therapeutics company Editas Medicine, published a way of making more precise edits with fewer unintended effects using a new process called prime editing. One of Doudna’s companies, Scribe Therapeutics, is engineering CRISPR molecules, rather than using the ones found in nature, in order to do away with the natural aspects that get in the way of putting it to good use as a targeted gene editor. The company just raised $20 million and signed a deal with pharmaceutical company Biogen to implement its technology. … [Read more...] about 2 women won the Nobel for CRISPR, but the battle for its patent rages on
