For as long as I can remember, I’ve experienced an afternoon slump. Somewhere between lunch and 3 p.m., my eyelids start getting heavy, and for the next 30 minutes, I can kiss any ounce of productivity goodbye. I’ve learned to schedule mindless tasks during that time. I clear my emails or do work that requires little concentration, like conducting web research. As a productivity-obsessed writer and editor, I’ve already adapted many healthy habits, which should theoretically help combat this slump. For the most part, I sleep between 7 to 7.5 hours a night. I wait 14 hours between dinner and my first meal of the next day, which is usually a protein and healthy-fats combo. I drink a lot of water. I exercise five to six days a week. I keep snacks like nuts and hard-boiled eggs handy so I don’t succumb to sugar cravings. Nothing has worked. In fact, over the last month I noticed that I’ve begun getting two slumps—one at 11 a.m. and one at 3 p.m. … [Read more...] about I tried working out at lunch to combat my 3 p.m. slump

Student Amber Sunner had suffered two strokes by the age of 15. She tells how she began rebuilding her life... "Having a stroke can be crushing; your body goes into shutdown and you become very disorientated."You often can't gather your thoughts or form sentences and the pain is blinding."I’m now 18, and studying at the University of Kent, but I had my first stroke when I was 12 and it was a shock, as I had always been healthy."I woke up in the night with a excruciating headache, I tried to get up out of bed to tell my parents I was feeling unwell, but I couldn’t move."A stroke can have many effects on a person, young or old."One of them is loss of movement in your arms and legs, another is loss of speech."No mater how hard I tried my legs and arms wouldn't co-operate with my brain."I thought it was a dream at first but the pain was very real so I tried calling out for my mum but no words came out."I had periodically lost my ability to talk so I screamed."I thought it was a … [Read more...] about ‘I tried calling for my mum but no words came out’
The sound of ocean waves overtook everything. I was laying quite still, on my back with my eyes shielded by a mask, hearing them grow louder, as if the tide was coming in at my feet. Without the benefit of sight, I tried to listen for their approach rather than watch them roll in. Just when I thought a wave would break over my head, the crash and retreat slid further from my ears until it stopped, only to be replaced with the sounds of chimes. I felt, however, as refreshed as if I’d taken a dip in the salt spray. But I was not at the beach. I was at One Thousand Birds sound studio in New York City. On a recent Thursday night, I found myself there in the company of a dozen strangers, one of whom was a musician named Alex Beckmann leading the others through a 45-minute sound bath. The tidal swish and crash were mimicked by an ocean drum, one of many instruments Beckmann used to create resonant chords that create a concert of vibrations designed to change the frequency inside the … [Read more...] about I tried a “sound bath” to feel less stressed and more productive
The following is a transcript of the video: Nico: We’re gonna be testing out the ABLE Cosmetics Eye Trio Set. This is what it looks like. It comes with an eyeliner, a mascara, and a pencil for your waterline. The thing about their products is that they all have a little extra-help twist to make it very user-friendly. The liquid eyeliner pencil comes with a little rubber shape thing. It’s rubber, and it’s a shape to help you get a perfect angle for your eyeliner. The mascara comes with this little mascara shield. You open this and use this part as a shield. Brush, brush, brush, shield, boom, your lid still looks really good. The eye pencil is so cool. It comes with a smudger brush on one side so you can, like, smudge out your waterline, and the cap actually comes with a sharpener. The trio itself cost $US75, which is too much money. But ABLE Cosmetics, their whole pull is that these will make your life easier, they’re gonna make your application process faster, … [Read more...] about I tried a $75 perfect eye makeup kit
I tried Muse 2, a high-tech headband that pairs with a mobile app to provide guided meditation with real-time feedback on brain activity, heart rate, breathing, and more. The devices translate this data into soundscapes that change based on your level of calmness. It was sometimes difficult to properly place the device on my head, but sessions did make me feel less stressed. I have long been intimidated by meditation. I’m terrible at letting go of thoughts that trouble me and my attention span is tragically short. Even the thought of sitting and doing nothing for a few minutes makes me restless. But I know that I could probably benefit from a regular meditation practice. A growing body of scientific evidence suggests that it has real benefits for the brain and body.Meditating appears to improve focus, decrease stress, and has been linked with lower blood pressure and reduced feelings of depression and anxiety, as Business Insider’s Erin Brodwin has reported. So when I … [Read more...] about I tried meditating with a headband that gives real-time feedback on your brain activity. Here’s what I thought.
