Shawn D. Lewis The Detroit News Published 5:56 PM EDT Sep 24, 2018 Bruce Township -- Bernard Wojnowski still carries three pieces of shrapnel in his head. “Do you want to see it?” he asks, removing his cap and bending his head to show the marks on his scalp. The shrapnel was “a souvenir,” as he calls it, from his service in Europe beginning in 1943, as a decorated World War II veteran in the U.S. Army's 5th Armored Division, which participated in the liberation of France from Nazi Germany. “I also was injured in my back, and all these years later, it still bothers me sometimes,” Wojnowski said. To celebrate Wojnowski for his service, he was presented the Legion of Honor, France's highest decoration, established in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte. At 93, Wojnowski is the longest-serving member of a VFW honor guard in Bruce Township that recognizes deceased veterans. ‘When you find my body’: The last days of hiker Gerry Largay
Visit The Boston Globe Share on Twitter Share on Facebook Comment on this Scroll to top of page By Kathryn Miles August 24, 2016 ON OCTOBER 14, 2015, a forester from a private company began an inventory of trees on land used by the Navy’s remote SERE survival school in Redington Township, Maine. Starting at a point that had been randomly generated by computer, he walked a straight line, pausing periodically to count trees. At his third stop, on a narrow knoll about 100 yards inside the Navy property, he stumbled upon an old campsite: a collapsed tent, a green backpack. Not far away, he saw what looked like human remains swaddled in a sky-blue sleeping bag. The forester called his headquarters, which phoned the Navy, which alerted Maine law enforcement. The next morning, Lieutenant Kevin Adam, the search-and-rescue coordinator for the Maine Warden Service, walked into the lobby of the Comfort Inn in Wilton. It was not yet 6 a.m., and sunrise was still an hour … [Read more...] about ‘When you find my body’: The last days of hiker Gerry Largay

Read the text messages at the heart of the Michelle Carter trial
Michelle Carter, the young Plainville woman who sent her boyfriend a barrage of text messages urging him to kill himself when they were both teenagers, was sentenced to 15 months in prison Thursday. Carter was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter by Juvenile Court Judge Lawrence in June. Moniz said she caused the death of Conrad Roy III, who intentionally filled his truck with carbon monoxide in a store parking lot in July 2014. Their text messages in the week before Roy’s suicide were released in court documents following Carter’s indictment. Carter’s lawyer, Joseph Cataldo, told The Boston Globe in 2015 that the teenager had previously tried to help her boyfriend seek treatment, but ultimately gave in and backed his suicide plan.
