Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin On July 26, 2022, the Tax Section of the Florida Bar (the “Tax Section”) submitted “Comments on Proposed Treasury Regulations Relating to the Basic Exclusion Amount Applicable to the Computation of Federal Estate and Gift Taxes.” The Proposed Regulations [1] are specifically targeting the situation where taxpayers made certain types of gifts after 2017 and then died after the basic exclusion amount (the “BEA”) is reduced. Under current law, the reduction in the BEA is scheduled to occur January 1, 2026, but federal legislation could be enacted prior to that date which could accelerate the timing of this reduction. Alex Jones Gets $49.3M Tax Write Off, Plaintiffs Have To Pay IRS Tax On Verdict
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin A Texas jury rendered a verdict in Alex Jones’ defamation trial, ordering Jones to pay $45.2 million in punitive damages plus $4.1 million in compensatory damages to Neil Heslin and Scarlett Lewis, parents of a 6-year-old boy killed in the Sandy Hook school shooting . Jones broadcast false claims that the shooting was staged by "crisis actors." Jones says that he will appeal, and even if he loses, appeals take time. Sometimes even after a verdict, a lower settlement is reached, since collecting on a big verdict can be difficult, expensive and time-consuming. It’s not clear how many assets Jones has, although Roger Stone has already started a campaign to raise money for him. But if Jones ever pays, many Americans might be surprised at the tax rules at play. Jones’s business model may not be to everyone’s liking, but if he makes money from his broadcasting operations, these are probably business expenses. In contrast, the … [Read more...] about Alex Jones Gets $49.3M Tax Write Off, Plaintiffs Have To Pay IRS Tax On Verdict

How IRS Taxes Fire Victims
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Do wildfire victims worry about their taxes? You bet. How fire victims are taxed depends on what they collect, what they claim on their taxes, if they are rebuilding their property, their insurance and more. Another big variable is whether they sue PG&E. It can build out a complex tax picture, especially now that there is a new tax on litigation settlements , as many legal fees can no longer be deducted . The IRS (and California’s notoriously tough Franchise Tax Board) require annual tax filings, so several years may be peppered with fire items. Say you lose a $1M home, but collect $1M from your insurance company or PG&E. There's no tax, right? Not so fast. You need to know about the tax basis of the property, usually purchase price, plus improvements. Your property might be worth $1M when it was destroyed, but if the original purchase price plus improvements was only $100K, there is a $900K gain. Does that … [Read more...] about How IRS Taxes Fire Victims
Beverly Hills Mansion With Mini Train Park Sells For $31.4 Million
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin If Los Angeles’ housing market has shown us anything this year, it’s that luxury real estate is on track for big things in 2021 . In the Flats section of Beverly Hills, a sprawling estate with a mansion and a private train park has sold for $31.4 million — one of the priciest transactions in the coveted Westside pocket in 2020, records show. The sale price, which reflects furnishings negotiated separately, is one of 20 transactions north of $20 million recorded this year in Beverly Hills. Among properties sold in the Flats, it ranks as the largest sale south of Sunset Boulevard, according to luxury real estate agent Keeley Smith of Hilton & Hyland , a founding member of Forbes Global Properties . Smith, who represented the sellers in the deal, said that the transaction reflects a shift towards quality over quantity that resulted from the coronavirus pandemic. "These luxury houses are still selling … [Read more...] about Beverly Hills Mansion With Mini Train Park Sells For $31.4 Million
Harry’s Table By Cipriani Makes Market Shopping Chic On New York’s Upper West Side
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin New Yorkers have never wanted for Italian specialties shops, but New Yorkers have never seen anything quite like the new Harry’s Table by Cipriani (hereafter HTC), outside of the stunning, long-lived PECK in Milan, and far more appealing than the touristy New York EATALY stores. In its breadth of space alone—28,000 square feet—HTC sets an unhurried pace, and, while sometime in the future it may be jammed, for the moment the eight-week-old market is a civilized pleasure to visit, shop in and eat at. HTC is located at ground level in the dwarfing, monolithic Two Waterline Square, near Lincoln Center, from which it currently draws most of its clientele. Since parking (outside of an expensive lot) is almost impossible, dropping by for those who do not live in the area will require you take a taxi or car service. The sprawling food market is the first by the Cipriani family, whose legendary history dates back to 1931, … [Read more...] about Harry’s Table By Cipriani Makes Market Shopping Chic On New York’s Upper West Side

5 Key Matchups To Watch For At The 2022 DCI World Championship Finals
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Well drum corps fans, it’s that time of year again. Finals! All the hard work across the summer pays off in the most spectacular spectacle of the marching arts right in the middle of Andrew Luck’s grave this weekend. Drum Corps International (DCI), for those of you who didn’t get bullied in high school, is a competitive circuit of marching band (yeah I said marching band, drum corps is just band, guys) that operates all across the US and Wyoming every summer from June to August, culminating in a championship between 35-40 groups every year in Indianapolis, Indiana. Groups are judged and evaluated on their visual, musical, and swag (General Effect) on a three night bonanza, with the top three groups receiving a medal for their performance. Every year, there are a few matchups between groups that are close races that are fun to watch as they play out across the season. Here are five things that I’ll be watching for this … [Read more...] about 5 Key Matchups To Watch For At The 2022 DCI World Championship Finals
Jamie Foxx rises again as dad, the vampire hunter, in Netflix’s dreary ‘Day Shift’
(CNN) "Day Shift" is about vampires, but it's one of those Frankenstein-like movies stitched together from used parts, with Jamie Foxx as a family man version of Marvel's Blade , mashed up with horror and buddy comedy. It's the kind of star-driven vehicle that yields obvious benefits to Netflix even if, qualitatively speaking, it doesn't deserve to see the light of day. Indeed, Foxx is clearly a favorite of the Netflix algorithm and likes cashing its checks, having starred in the movie "Project Power" and sitcom "Dad Stop Embarrassing Me!" in the last two years, the latter inspired and produced by his daughter, Corinne Foxx. Parenthood is again at the heart of the plot, such as it is, in "Day Shift," which could just as easily be titled "Dad: Vampire Slayer." Foxx plays Bud Jablonski, a bounty hunter (he masquerades as a pool cleaner) struggling to make ends meet financially, suddenly given a major motivation to earn cash: His ex (Meagan Good) is planning to move away from … [Read more...] about Jamie Foxx rises again as dad, the vampire hunter, in Netflix’s dreary ‘Day Shift’
