Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin No matter what you think of President Joe Biden, it’s hard not to empathize with him for the loss of his son Beau Biden to brain cancer in 2015. Biden was able to turn his personal loss into a constructive mission when then President Barack Obama in his 2016 State of the Union Address put him in charge of the Cancer Moonshot Initiative, an effort aimed at advancing cancer research and improve results for patients. The program itself didn’t formally have an early lifespan – Obama left office in January 2017. Yet funding for dozens of projects will continue until 2023. Biden went on to personally keep his involvement in the fight against cancer going after Donald Trump was elected president, forming the Biden Cancer Initiative in 2017 to advance collaboration and writing a book, “Promise Me, Dad” about his son’s battle. Biden halted the Biden Cancer Initiative in mid-2019 when he said he’d run for president. This … [Read more...] about Meet The Scientist Coordinating Joe Biden’s New Cancer Moonshot

New Job Honeymoon Vs. Hangover
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Most people begin new jobs in a honeymoon period marked by high expectations and great optimism. And that’s a good thing. Unfortunately, especially at non-senior levels, the honeymoon can morph into a new-job hangover – marked by doubts and disenchantment – often in about six months. And, today, with millions and millions of Americans currently in either of those two phases, the question of “how-do-I-succeed” is paramount. Scope of the Issue The magnitude of the challenge is significant. · The Labor Department ’s Bureau of Labor Statistics measures what it classifies as total separations (essentially resignations, layoffs and discharges). In May, separations totaled 6.0 million, with “quits” at 4.3 million. · The number of hires, meanwhile, was 6.5 million, implying that those Americans who resigned found new positions. And, if the picture painted by the numbers is on the mark, those who were furloughed or … [Read more...] about New Job Honeymoon Vs. Hangover

WNBA’s Brittney Griner convicted at drug trial, sentenced to 9 years by Russian judge
By JIM HEINTZ KHIMKI, Russia (AP) — U.S. basketball star Brittney Griner was convicted Thursday in Russia of drug possession and sentenced to nine years in prison following a politically charged trial that came amid soaring tensions between Moscow and Washington over Ukraine and could lead to a high-stakes prisoner exchange between the two world powers. The 31-year-old Griner, a two-time U.S. Olympic champion and a eight-time all-star with the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury listened with a blank expression as an interpreter translated the verdict by Judge Anna Sotnikova. The judge also fined her 1 million rubles (about $16,700) fine. U.S. President Joe Biden denounced the verdict and sentence as “unacceptable.” “I call on Russia to release her immediately so she can be with her wife, loved ones, friends, and teammates,” Biden said, adding that he would continue to work to bring home Griner and Paul Whelan, an American imprisoned in Russia on an espionage conviction. New Monkeypox Dosing Strategy Could Help Stretch Scarce Supplies—But Poses New Challenges For Vaccine Rollout
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline Facing a fast-growing monkeypox outbreak and a severe shortage of vaccines, U.S. officials on Tuesday greenlit a dose-saving method to stretch scarce vaccine supplies, a strategy some experts warn needs more research and raises a host of new logistical hurdles. Key Facts The Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday issued an emergency use authorization allowing Jynneos, the only vaccine licensed against monkeypox in the U.S., to be injected intradermally, or into the skin, rather than by a standard subcutaneous injection, which goes into the fat underneath the skin. As there is a high concentration of immune cells just under the skin, the method means lower doses of vaccine can be used to elicit a similar response to other methods of vaccination, Dr. Dan Barouch, director of the Center for Virology and Vaccine Research at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, told Forbes. Officials say the … [Read more...] about New Monkeypox Dosing Strategy Could Help Stretch Scarce Supplies—But Poses New Challenges For Vaccine Rollout
Want That New Habit to Stick? Science Says Do It in the Morning
Establishing new habits is notoriously difficult . New science might make it just a little easier. A study published in the journal Health Psychology has some dead simple advice for anyone hoping to finally make that new, healthy habit stick. Instead of trying to do whatever it is before bed, make your new habit the first thing you do when you get up in the morning. The findings suggest that if you make this small change, the new habit will become automatic 50 days sooner than if you do the habit at night. 105 days versus 154 days. To figure this out, scientists recruited a small group of 48 university students for a 90-day experiment. Each day the students were instructed to do a simple 15-second stretch. Half were told to do it first thing in the morning, while the other half were told to do it at night. The researchers then used an app to check up on whether the students remembered to stretch and how much thought had gone into carrying out the new habit. … [Read more...] about Want That New Habit to Stick?
