Remote meetings have overtaken our calendars. Here are 3 ways to home in on the most necessary ones

August 16, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

Meetings get a bad rap. However, their lousy reputations aren’t unwarranted since most people consider meetings a waste of time alongside stoking a lack of motivation and energy-sapping feelings. According to these sentiments, most meetings are terrible, and they’re getting more time-consuming and even less liked. advertisement advertisement If you’re a blatant opponent of meetings, you are not alone. A study by Atlassian found U.S. businesses waste $37 billion in salary costs for unnecessary meetings, and the average person attends a whopping 62 meetings per month. Research by Otter.ai found 70% of employees experienced a 70% increase in meetings when remote work was introduced. Working from home is great, but the downside may be even more meetings. In addition, according to data from LiveCareer , 36% of workers spend 4 to 7 hours per week in meetings, 32% spent 7 to 10 hours per week in meetings, and 39% said their meetings were getting … [Read more...] about Remote meetings have overtaken our calendars. Alan Greenspan’s Genius at the Federal Reserve Was In Hiding How Little He Knew

August 14, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin It’s a bit of unreported on history that will eventually vanish, but back in 2005 Ben Bernanke went on a “listening” and “courting” tour. This thoroughgoing Keynesian who believed deeply that economic growth caused inflation, that government spending boosted growth, and most laughably, that “tight money” from the Fed brought on the 1930s, tried to refashion himself as a “Republican” economic thinker, whatever that means. Bernanke met with anyone on the Right who would meet with him, and who theoretically had juice. His motives were clear: he was on George W. Bush’s shortlist for Federal Reserve Chairman, at which point he was checking the various Right-wing boxes. He even had lunch with Cato co-founder and President Ed Crane. Crane was clear about his disdain for the Phillips Curve (see above), only for Bernanke to mutter something indecipherable about growth and inflation a la Alan Greenspan’s own inscrutable mutterings as Fed … [Read more...] about Alan Greenspan’s Genius at the Federal Reserve Was In Hiding How Little He Knew

US SPAC king goes silent with his empire shrivelling

August 17, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

Chamath Palihapitiya - A + A NEW YORK (Aug 17): The news came with little fanfare. It was late on a sleepy summer afternoon last week, and few on Wall Street even seemed to notice the pair of filings when they hit the Securities and Exchange Commission's (SEC) website. In terse, boilerplate language, the documents stated that two special-purpose acquisition companies (SPACs) launched by Chamath Palihapitiya needed to push back the deadlines they had set to make acquisitions. Palihapitiya was in no mood to trumpet the news. There were no tweets, no interviews, none of the braggadocio that came with so many of his big SPAC deals, back when the market was the hot new thing in finance, a sure-fire, money-minting machine, and Palihapitiya was its undisputed king. But if those euphoric moments two years ago represented the peak of SPAC frenzy — a phenomenon created out of the same ingredients (unprecedented monetary and fiscal stimulus) that gave us meme stocks and … [Read more...] about US SPAC king goes silent with his empire shrivelling

Florence Pugh confirms split with Zach Braff

August 17, 2022 by edition.cnn.com

(CNN) Florence Pugh and Zach Braff have been used to the attention on their relationship , which they quietly ended earlier this year, according to Pugh. "We've been trying to do this separation without the world knowing, because it's been a relationship that everybody has an opinion on," Pugh told Harper's Bazaar for their September 2022 issue. "We just felt something like this would really do us the benefit of not having millions of people telling us how happy they are that we're not together. So we've done that. I automatically get a lumpy throat when I talk about it." Last year before they broke up, Pugh talked to the Sunday Times about people's criticism over her being 21 years younger than Braff. "I think it bugs people that it's not who they expected," she said then. "But it's my life and I'm not doing anything to please people or to make it a better headline or story. I want to also be a person!" She told Harper's Bazaar she's not a … [Read more...] about Florence Pugh confirms split with Zach Braff

August 17, 2022 by entertainment.inquirer.net

Ezra Miller attends the Apple Store Soho presentation of Meet the Cast: “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” at Apple Store Soho on Nov. 9, 2016, in New York City. Image:Getty Images via AFP/Michael Loccisano Ezra Miller, the troubled star of Warner Bros’ major upcoming superhero movie “The Flash,” is seeking treatment for mental health issues after a string of high-profile controversies, the actor said. The 29-year-old, who has already appeared as the key DC Comics character in several blockbuster films, including “Justice League,” was charged this month with felony burglary in Vermont, and earlier this year was charged with disorderly conduct following two arrests in Hawaii. Those incidents—and further allegations of choking a woman in an Icelandic bar, which did not result in charges—have raised questions in Hollywood over the future of “The Flash” and Miller’s career more broadly. “Having recently gone through a time of intense crisis, I now understand that I am … [Read more...] about ‘The Flash’ star Ezra Miller seeking treatment for mental health

To attract and retain talent, work on ‘employer brand’

August 17, 2022 by www.moneycontrol.com

Small and medium businesses (SMEs) can improve employee retention and reduce recruitment costs by building an “employer brand”. SMEs with good employer branding see 20 percent revenue growth as compared to 8 percent in those with poor employer branding. An employer brand is more than just goodwill or reputation. Every business has a branding whether it is built consciously or not. The products and services, quality, news about its leaders and so on build an image in the minds of customers, suppliers, and current and future employees. What goodwill and corporate brands are to reputation and perception, employer branding is to potential job seekers. How are you perceived as an employer is what the employer branding seeks to address. SMEs face a serious challenge in finding, engaging and retaining talent. Positioning as a good employer is critical to attracting talent or SMEs will have to shell out more for even short-term talent. It is not just compensation but a company’s … [Read more...] about To attract and retain talent, work on ‘employer brand’

Should SMEs take sexual harassment at workplace seriously?

August 6, 2022 by www.moneycontrol.com

Representative image. Many SMEs approach us for consultation on how to implement PoSH (prevention of sexual harassment) provisions at workplaces, especially when new investors scrutinise such provisions. The new-age investors understand the need for making the workplace safe and congenial and the PoSH guideline is the first step to inclusion and diversity. Diversity on the other fronts comes later. Though the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act has been notified, the details on its administration are not clear. We hear about sordid cases of harassment every now and then. These grab the headlines, especially if the people involved are high profile. SMEs can have a major challenge if things blow over and their major ethical customers stop dealing with them due to their poor record on this front. This can also present a risk because while details of how to submit compliance reports are nebulous, the fines prescribed can create an … [Read more...] about Should SMEs take sexual harassment at workplace seriously?

Appeals Court Blocks Florida Minor From Getting An Abortion

August 16, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline A Florida appeals court affirmed Monday a lower judge’s ruling that a 16-year-old minor in the state cannot get an abortion, based on a law requiring parental consent for minors, forcing the teenager to carry her pregnancy to term as such consent laws come under increasing scrutiny in the wake of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade. Key Facts A three-judge panel at the First District Court of Appeals in Florida sided with a circuit court judge in Escambia County, who ruled that the plaintiff “had not established by clear and convincing evidence that she was sufficiently mature to decide whether to terminate her pregnancy,” as Florida law requires. The state’s parental consent law , enacted in 2020, lets minors seek a “judicial bypass” and get court permission to get an abortion if they can’t get consent from a parent or guardian. The judges said their decision was based on the fact that … [Read more...] about Appeals Court Blocks Florida Minor From Getting An Abortion
