Nasdaq rises over 1% as dip in yields supports megacaps

August 9, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A NEW YORK/BENGALURU (Aug 8): The Nasdaq led US stock indexes higher on Monday, as a pullback in Treasury yields boosted megacap growth stocks after last week's blockbuster jobs data sparked a tech selloff on expectations of sharp rate hikes by the Federal Reserve. The focus this week will be on consumer prices data on Wednesday. The S&P 500 has bounced back 13% from its mid-June lows, but investors fear that signs of persistent inflation this week could further bolster the Fed's case for aggressive monetary policy tightening. "While it's clear the Fed needs to continue tightening policy, there are still about six weeks until the next meeting and we remind investors that economic data can change very quickly," said Robert Schein, chief investment officer at Blanke Schein Wealth Management. "The CPI data will help to confirm if the Fed's tightening efforts have been successful in starting to tame inflation or if continued Fed tightening is needed." … [Read more...] about Nasdaq rises over 1% as dip in yields supports megacaps

How to take risks at work when you feel burned out

August 7, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

Have you ever felt pulled in too many directions? Have you ever felt that those in your professional life were being demanding or that no matter what you did your manager wasn’t satisfied? Have you ever felt that despite your best efforts, you weren’t doing enough? Most of us have been there, and most of us at some point have been told that the solution is “better balance.” advertisement advertisement As a speaker on gender-related issues, I frequently get asked to discuss work-life balance. However, I respectfully decline this topic in favor of a more realistic and empowering approach to “time and energy optimization.” While balance is an elusive ideal at best, it also misses an essential point. Instead of imagining a scale with two sides that we’re trying to balance, we would be better off imagining a wallet with a limited number of dollars. We have a choice of where to invest those dollars—our time—and we want to invest them in the activities and … [Read more...] about How to take risks at work when you feel burned out

Biden ‘concerned’ as China extends military drills around Taiwan

August 9, 2022 by newsinfo.inquirer.net

A Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) aircraft flies over a 68-nautical-mile scenic spot, one of mainland China’s closest points to the island of Taiwan, in Pingtan island, Fujian province, China Aug. 5, 2022. (Photo by ALY SONG / Reuters) TAIPEI — China announced new military drills around Taiwan on Monday, eliciting concern from US President Joe Biden, a day after the scheduled end of Beijing’s largest exercises to protest last week’s visit to the island by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. China’s Eastern Theatre Command said it would conduct joint drills focusing on anti-submarine and sea assault operations – confirming the fears of some security analysts and diplomats that Beijing would keep pressure on Taiwan’s defenses. Taiwan’s foreign ministry condemned the move, saying China, which claims the self-ruled island as its own, was deliberately creating crises. It demanded Beijing stop its military actions and “pull back from the edge.” “In the face of military … [Read more...] about Biden ‘concerned’ as China extends military drills around Taiwan

‘Bullet Train’ Box Office: Why $30 Million Is Decent Debut For Brad Pitt Movie

August 8, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Sony reported an opening weekend estimate of $30 million for their $90 million action-comedy Bullet Train , which is right in the middle of essentially $25-$35 million pre-release guestimates. Amusingly enough, back in early 2022, while we were all watching the wave of late-2021/early-2022 biggies ( West Side Story, The Matrix Resurrections , Death on the Nile , etc.) die in theaters as all roads pointed to Spider-Man: No Way Home and Sing 2 , a new-to-you, R-rated, adult-skewing Brad Pitt actioner pulling a $30 million opening would have been a pie-in-the-sky result. That Top Gun: Maverick has been pulling James Cameron-worthy legs, and that Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum’s The Lost City opened with $30 million, doesn’t make this result for Bullet Train any less impressive. In terms of a Pitt vehicle without a significant co-star, it’s pretty much best-case scenario. Not counting his cameos in Deadpool … [Read more...] about ‘Bullet Train’ Box Office: Why $30 Million Is Decent Debut For Brad Pitt Movie

How To Know If Your Co-Workers Are Ghost Quitting

August 4, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Steadily and stealthily over the past several months, many of your colleagues have been “ghost quitting,” which means they aren’t leaving their jobs, but they're mentally checking out. Some of these workplace specters are unhappy and would love for nothing more than to quit outright, but they may be afraid of the attendant risks. In today’s environment, it may be safer to stay put, wait and see how things go, and quietly bide your time until things turn around. These coasters are easy to spot: They do the bare minimum amount of work to get by. They’ll finish their assignments, but the end product is mediocre, at best. They’re in the office by the crack of 9:35 a.m., hoping no one notices. When spotted sliding in, they offer a vague, nonchalant excuse for being late. Two-hour lunch breaks are standard and they're in the elevator heading out for the day before 5 p.m. Their overall performance is just … [Read more...] about How To Know If Your Co-Workers Are Ghost Quitting

(Photo by Mark Sagliocco/Getty Images for Showtime Networks) The Great Comet controversy might be far from fizzling out. Last month, the producers of Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812 tried to generate some buzz at the box office by recruiting Mandy Patinkin, a Caucasian actor known from television, to replace Okieriete Onaodowan, an African-American actor known from Hamilton . But, after social media users complained about producers forcing an African-American actor to step aside for a Caucasian actor, Patinkin decided to withdraw from the show. “My understanding of the show’s request that I step into the show is not as it has been portrayed,” Patinkin stated on social media , adding that “I would never accept a role knowing it would harm … [Read more...] about Great Comet Controversy Could Continue After Closing

Career Inspiration From Three Marathon Runners: ‘Do The Next Amazing Thing’

August 8, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Are you stuck in a career plateau, simply craving inspiration and/or movement to catapult to the next level? Or maybe you’re experiencing some challenges that seem implausible to power through? Well, by looking outside ourselves, there’s nothing quite like goal setting and pushing past your limits like running a marathon. Sure, it may be a cliché, but the saying “it’s a marathon, not a sprint” is truly on point based on three runners who comprised Degree’s Not Done Yet marathon team. Meet Ashley Zirkle, a senior civil engineer, who recently completed the San Francisco Marathon. In 2016, she ran the marathon in Savannah, but at mile marker 18, between cramps and bad shin splints, she had to stop. This year, her achievement is all the more poignant based on her back story. As Zirkle read an article two years ago, her mindset was wanting to make a difference in the world. “I didn’t know what that looked like, but it was … [Read more...] about Career Inspiration From Three Marathon Runners: ‘Do The Next Amazing Thing’

JetBlue Wins Battle For Spirit Airlines, Now In Top 5 U.S. Airlines

August 1, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin JetBlue and Spirit Airlines announced a merger, really the acquisition of Spirit by JetBlue, this week. The news comes one day after Frontier Airlines, Spirit’s former suitor, terminated its bid for the airline.
