Look up! Rockets, made from cheap PVC plumbing pipe roaring into the skies, parades featuring cross dressers and phallic symbols, mud fests, all fuelled by rice wine and other local brews (many as potent as the whatever-it-is used to launch the rockets). Yes, it’s time for the annual Rocket Festival or Bun Bang Fai, held in May, mostly in Thailand’s north east. When it comes to ‘TIT’ (This Is Thailand), it doesn’t get much more TIT than this. It’s time for the north east to welcome in the wet season and pay homage to Phaya Taen, the god of rain, by penetrating the skies over Isaan with home made rockets that are the pride of the villages and communities that make them. The spectacle attracts over 50,000 visitors every year. Now, just like the Songkran festival, there’s even an international dimension creeping into the Bun Bang Fai, with teams coming from Laos, Cambodia, South Korea and Japan competing for the best, highest, fastest and ‘most beautiful’ rocket categories. ‘This is not my kid’: Mysterious hepatitis wreaked havoc in healthy child with shocking speed
(CNN) The day they wheeled 2-year-old Baelyn Schwab into surgery to get a new liver, her skin was orange, and she was delirious. "Her eyes didn't look like they were attached to her head anymore," her mom, Kelsea Schwab, told CNN Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta. "They were just rolling all over. "She would still ask for bananas and ask for juice and ask for snuggles, kind of like she's still there, but not really," she said. Seemingly out of nowhere, Baelyn's liver had become so damaged that it could no longer clean ammonia out of her blood. She's part of a nationwide investigation by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention into recent cases of sudden severe hepatitis -- or swelling of the liver -- in 109 children in 25 states and territories. There are roughly 340 more children with similar cases around the world, the, European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control reported on Wednesday. Everyone’s Other Invisible Cloud Security Problem: Open Storage Buckets
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Steve Riley is a Field CTO at Netskope . Now that we’ve explored the familiar form of SaaS file sharing , let’s compare it to the very different ways that storage objects in IaaS/PaaS clouds are shared (e.g., Amazon S3 buckets, Azure blobs, Google Cloud storage). All of these objects begin with a much more controlled default. Only the owner of the object has access—the opposite of the starting point for SaaS. The world is shut out; if the owner of the object wants to share any of that content with anyone else, they have to intentionally change the access control list. Making such a change is usually very easy. The owner might log into the console and navigate to the storage object’s properties menu and select “change access control.” In many cases, the next step is too tempting to resist: thoughtlessly taking the shortcut of granting the world at least read-only access or maybe even read/write access. … [Read more...] about Everyone’s Other Invisible Cloud Security Problem: Open Storage Buckets
How To Succeed In Times Of Adversity
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Gradually, then suddenly, it feels like all we’ve achieved has started to unravel . There was a brief time when life seemed to improve. Businesses reopened and people left their homes to travel, dine out and reacquaint with family and friends. People went back to work and the stock market and real estate prices boomed, creating a wealth effect and injecting positivity into the nation—but it didn’t last long. Inflation, higher prices, layoffs, political strife, empty shelves at stores, a war in Eastern Europe and a crashing stock and cryptocurrency market has shaken us. The letdown has been compounded by the collective trauma the nation has endured over the last two years. You Can Thrive In Challenging Times A major key to success is creating a positive mindset to cope with and overcome adversity. You want to develop the skills and mental toughness to not only survive, but thrive in challenging times. It’s … [Read more...] about How To Succeed In Times Of Adversity
What Courts Need To Understand About Victims Of Domestic Violence
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Domestic Violence Victims and their Abusers Why do victims reach out to their abusers? Those in an abusive relationship may go through periods of calm between incidents of violence. Victims sometimes cope by focusing on their perpetrator's loving side and shutting out the abuse, maintaining contact to elicit affirmative behavior or financial support from the abuser. They may also rely on the abusive person to fulfill emotional needs. They may feel shame or a sense of failure. In one particular case, the courtship was short (less than a year during the pandemic) and against the advice of friends and family, the couple married. The wife stayed silent about the abuse, in part, due to religious reasons— she is deeply religious, and divorce is not acceptable in her religion. During the litigation for the order of protection, the husband complained that the wife had sexual intercourse with him during litigation … [Read more...] about What Courts Need To Understand About Victims Of Domestic Violence

Dealing With Uncertainty Is A Science: Use It!
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin We humans hate uncertainty . Our brains treat it like a threat and trigger us to avoid it. Yet, since the pandemic, there’s been no getting around it: Making decisions without as much confidence as we’d like is just part of the new normal. And, neuroscientists and psychologists agree, it can lead to a spiral of anxiety and self-reinforcing negativity . You feel like you don’t have control → You get anxious → Anxiety clouds your judgment → You make less opportunistic decisions → You’re unhappy with the outcome → You have less control . . . Feel familiar? Why am I writing about this? As a mother of three school-age kids and a leader of a nonprofit, I am constantly confronted with having to make decisions with less certainty than I want. And, even with the pandemic waning, there’s no sign that uncertainty is going away any time soon. But, because my work is focused on science and math, I can talk to people who think … [Read more...] about Dealing With Uncertainty Is A Science: Use It!
After Raising $53 Million For Ellevest, Sallie Krawcheck Shares Concerns Around The Series B Cliff
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin A glance at some of the most high profile women-owned businesses that garnered large scale investments reveals an interesting trend: many that reach the $1 Billion tend to fall into “traditional women-focused” categories such as retail and fashion (see: Spanx and Stitchfix .) While obstacles undoubtedly remain in place, some sectors are lagging behind others. Take for example, the institutional barriers women in fintech face when attempting to secure capital. No one knows about the gender battles of fintech better than Sallie Krawcheck, who has spent the past few decades trying to bring more women into the industry, from securing more funding for women-owned businesses to convincing more women to take control of their personal financial investments. Krawcheck has been referred to as the most powerful woman on Wall Street. In 2014, she created Ellevest , an investment platform and financial literacy program with a … [Read more...] about After Raising $53 Million For Ellevest, Sallie Krawcheck Shares Concerns Around The Series B Cliff
Opinion: The surprising solution to gun violence
Jens Ludwig is the Edwin A. and Betty L. Bergman Distinguished Service Professor at the University of Chicago, Pritzker Director of the University of Chicago Crime Lab, and an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine of the National Academies of Science. The views expressed in this commentary are his own. View more opinion on CNN. (CNN) In 1973, two psychologists came up with a clever experiment . They took a group of Princeton Theological Seminary students and asked them to walk across campus to give a lecture on the parable of the "Good Samaritan." Along their route, the psychologists positioned someone in a doorway, not moving, eyes closed, coughing and groaning as the study subjects went by -- someone, in other words, clearly in need of a Good Samaritan's help. There was a twist: Before the students left to give their lecture, some were told they were late. Others weren't told anything at all. That little variation in their situation made all the difference … [Read more...] about Opinion: The surprising solution to gun violence
Psychedelic companies are betting big on ketamine as the next Prozac
advertisement advertisement Kristine sat in a reclining chair, cocooned in an eyeshade and headphones, with a weighted blanket covering her lap. Incense burned in the background. She felt a pinch in her arm. “Okay,” the nurse said. “Have a nice trip!” Kristine peeled back her eye mask. “How long does it take to kick in?” she asked. “About 45 to 60 seconds,” the nurse said. advertisement advertisement “Okay, then. I’ll see you later,” Kristine said, bringing the mask back down and letting the ketamine take effect. Kristine’s 45-minute-long ketamine trip, which took place last May at a clinic in New York City, is part of a new approach to mental health care, one that employs once-verboten psychedelic drugs. For decades, a privileged few researchers have been charting the success of drugs like MDMA (known in clubs as Molly or ecstasy), LSD (acid), psilocybin (“magic mushrooms”), and ketamine (“Special K”) in treating depression, … [Read more...] about Psychedelic companies are betting big on ketamine as the next Prozac
