- A + A TAIPEI (Aug 9): Taiwan's foreign minister said on Tuesday (Aug 9) that China is using the military drills it launched in protest against US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit as an excuse to prepare for an invasion of the self-ruled island. Joseph Wu told a press conference in Taipei that Taiwan, which is claimed by China as its own, would not be intimidated, even as the drills continued, with China often breaching the unofficial median line down the Taiwan Strait. "China has used the drills...to prepare for the invasion of Taiwan," Wu said, urging international support to safeguard "peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait". "It's conducting large-scale military exercises, missile launches as well as cyberattacks, a disinformation campaign and economic coercion, in an attempt to weaken public morale in Taiwan." Wu spoke as military tensions simmered, after the scheduled end on Sunday of four days of the largest-ever Chinese … [Read more...] about Taiwanese foreign minister warns China preparing for invasion

Does Taiwan have its own airspace? China sets military drills close to island after Pelosi visit
(CNN) China is conducting military drills around Taiwan to protest a visit to the island this week by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. China issued a map showing six zones around Taiwan that would be the site of air and sea exercises, and long-range live-fire drills in coming days -- part of what a spokesman described as a "blockade." Ships and aircraft have been warned to stay out of the areas during the drills. On Thursday, Taiwan's Maritime and Port Bureau said China had added a seventh military exercise area for ships and aircraft to avoid "in the waters around eastern Taiwan." The exercise areas announced by Beijing extend well into Taiwan's air defense identification zone -- a buffer of airspace commonly referred to as an ADIZ -- and in some cases come within 12 nautical miles (22.2 kilometers) of its shores. Twelve nautical miles is the distance that international law defines as constituting a country's territorial airspace. Analysts … [Read more...] about Does Taiwan have its own airspace? Foreigners cut China bond holdings, dump equities in July, report shows
A China yuan note is seen in this illustration photo. REUTERS/Thomas White/File photo SHANGHAI – Foreign investors continued to cut holdings in Chinese bonds in July and dumped equities for the first time in four months, according to a report by the Institute of International Finance (IIF). Emerging markets posted a fifth straight month of portfolio outflows, setting the longest such streak in records going back to 2005, as global recession risk, inflation and a strong dollar drew away cash, showed the report released on Wednesday. Chinese debt witnessed outflows of around $3 billion last month, while $6 billion exited other EM, IIF estimated. If confirmed by official data, it would be the sixth consecutive month of foreign outflows from China’s $20-trillion bond market. During the same period, China’s stock market witnessed $3.5 billion of foreign outflows, compared with marginal inflows of $2.5 billion in other EM markets, IIF added. By visiting Taiwan, Nancy Pelosi has called China’s bluff
In Asia, Taiwan represents the United States’ biggest commitment to upholding democracy. Taiwan is the postcard picture of the benefits of being a US ally, and Washington cannot ignore any threat to it. The longstanding Chinese threat to the island nation is but the threat a democratic Taipei faces from an autocratic Beijing. That’s why despite Beijing’s warnings that it would “not stand idly by”, Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan on August 2. In fact Beijing’s provocative statements left Pelosi (and even the US administration) little choice but to go ahead with the visit. To back off would have meant that Washington was cowing down to Beijing’s threats — something no administration in Washington would want. Pelosi’s Taiwan visit is all about standing by and protecting a “vibrant, robust democracy” which is “under threat” from China. Pelosi’s August 2 article in The Washington Post titled ‘ Why I’m leading a congressional delegation to Taiwan ’ focuses more on the threat the … [Read more...] about By visiting Taiwan, Nancy Pelosi has called China’s bluff
[email protected]: A macho foreign policy that projects power
Prime Minister Narendra Modi. (Image: AP) When India was only eight years young as an independent nation, its foreign policy was its first milestone, which has been replicated many times since, up until the country’s ongoing Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav. India assembled an impressive coalition of newly-independent and emerging nations in Asia and Africa at the 1955 Bandung Conference, which paved the way for the creation of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). The assembly enabled India to punch way above its weight on the global stage although its people were poor, and its economic power insignificant. This coalition has remained India’s primary constituency in the community of nations ever since. Indians today increasingly boast about their country’s new alliances, stronger relations with developed countries, and act as if a new India has arrived in the international arena as a great power. Yet, India can ignore the `Bandung spirit’ even now only at its own peril. Most other … [Read more...] about [email protected]: A macho foreign policy that projects power

The US-led drive to isolate Russia, China falls short
Viktor Vekselberg (Photo by Andrey Rudakov/Bloomberg) - A + A The soft power tussle was on show in Africa last month, when Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov won praise for Moscow’s nuclear power technology BERLIN/HONG KONG/JOHANNESBURG (Aug 8): When Group of Seven leaders gathered in the Bavarian Alps in June, they pledged to stand with Ukraine for the long haul. Their Group of 20 counterparts are proving less supportive. Comprising nations that account for some 85% of global economic output, the G-20 is supposed to be more reflective of the world. Yet only half its number has joined the international sanctions imposed on fellow member Russia over its invasion of Ukraine. Senior officials from the smaller group of wealthy nations have been traveling the world to make the case for a tougher economic net around Russia. They’ve been surprised by the lack of sign-on from G-20 states, even if those countries aren’t going out of their way to help … [Read more...] about The US-led drive to isolate Russia, China falls short
