Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin New York City—one of the world’s largest centers of finance, culture and commerce— faces a daunting challenge. The Big Apple is confronting a wave of violence and crime along with a surge of Omicron. The New York Police Department’s data showed a rapid increase in murder, rape, robbery, felony assault, burglary, and grand larceny auto . Felony assaults surpassed 22,000 incidents and murders neared 500 last year. In addition to crime, commuters into the City need to deal with dirtier streets, open drug use rage and aggressive homeless people. "I've lived in Manhattan for all of my 62 years, and have never been as afraid of crime as I am now. Whenever I leave my apartment building, my "street-smarts" are always at the highest level now," midtown resident Michael Tuller said. Companies have been desperately trying to get workers back to the office. Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin It may have just gotten a little tougher for Fred Wilpon to hang on to the New York Mets. This afternoon, credit rating agency S&P Global Ratings announced it was lowering its ratings to BB+, from BBB, on the New York City Industrial Development Agency’s series 2006 $547.4 million payment-in-lieu-of-taxes (PILOT) bonds, $58.4 million installment purchase bonds, $7.1 million lease revenue bonds, and series 2009 $82.28 million PILOT bonds issued for Queens Ballpark Co. LLC (Citi Field), the baseball team’s ballpark. S&P said it was also assigning a recovery rating of 1, reflecting an expectation for very high (90-100%; rounded estimate: 95%) recovery in the event of a default. The team made a PILOT bond payment of $44 million in 2019. The BB+ rating is the first step toward being rated below investment grade. Specifically, an insurer rated BBB has good financial security characteristics but is more likely to be … [Read more...] about New York Mets’ Citi Field Debt Is Downgraded To Below Investment Grade
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Alex Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez have reportedly ended their attempt to buy the New York Mets. That’s not exactly a shocker—it was always a huge long shot. I provided four reasons the couple would never buy the baseball team three weeks ago. According to multiple sources, the attempt by Rodriguez and Lopez never got any traction. They never got a firm commitment from any investors they spoke with. Why not? Rodriguez wanted to be the managing partner of the Mets while he and Lopez were going to put in only $50 million to buy the team. Rich guys like Wayne Rothbaum and Richard Tsai were never going to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in the Mets and turn the keys of the team over to Rodriguez. Assuming the Mets sold for Forbes ’ $2.4 billion valuation (including $350 million of debt), Rodriguez wanted to call the shots while putting in just over 2% of the equity. Letting an investor with such little skin … [Read more...] about Why Alex Rodriguez And Jennifer Lopez Couldn’t Buy The New York Mets
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Many of the workplace trends of 2020 and 2021 will continue into 2022. Not only does the Omicron variant remind us that Covid-19 is not going away anytime soon, but our ideas about work are changing and, in some cases, permanently. One trend likely to remain for some time is the emergence of the hybrid workplace —with employees being given the optionality to work in the office and remotely. The freedom to be able to continue working remotely is being billed as a boon for women, allowing them to craft their own solutions to the increasingly difficult challenge of work-life balance. But what if choosing to work remotely brings a degree of freedom but also comes at a cost? What if women (and others opting for remote work) sacrifice career opportunities in the process? The pandemic’s effect on working women It is worth briefly revisiting some of the ways the pandemic has taken a toll on working women , mothers … [Read more...] about Could The New Hybrid Workplace Turn Some Women Into Second-Class Employees?
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The owners of the New York Mets may have recently gotten some unexpected help in their sale of the baseball team. The Wilpon family has been trying to sell the New York Mets for several months. A deal with Steve Cohen fell through in February. It’s unclear how long the Wilpons can, or want to, hold on to the team. The Mets are losing money and have a mountain of debt: $350 million on the team and perhaps another $450 million on SNY, their 65%-owned regional sports network. B aseball was shut down in mid-March, and the latest proposal would have the season start in late June with no fans. That would wipe out money from tickets, suites, concessions and parking—over a third of the team’s revenue . Alex Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez are trying to raise money to buy the Mets but are a long shot . Selling a team during a time of great economic uncertainty for the sport would depresses the price. The longer … [Read more...] about Wilpons Could Get Help In Sale Of Mets From Increase In MLB Debt

T he New York Yankees are Major League Baseball’s most valuable franchise, worth $5.25 billion by Forbes’ count last year. But the team’s owners haven’t stopped there: Yankee Global Enterprises also has stakes in reigning MLS champion New York City FC, the YES Network and Legends Hospitality—which works with sports and entertainment organizations and venues in areas like hospitality, partnerships, concessions and merchandise—and it has a small equity stake in the Professional Fighters League, an MMA promotion. The additional holdings push the total value of the company’s sports properties to $6.81 billion. (Full disclosure: I am co-host of the YES Network’s Forbes SportsMoney show.) The story is much the same at AMB Group, which owns both the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons and MLS’s Atlanta United, as well as golf retailer PGA Tour Superstore. Monumental Sports & Entertainment’s portfolio includes the NBA’s Washington Wizards, the NHL’s Washington Capitals and the WNBA’s Washington … [Read more...] about The World’s Most Valuable Sports Empires 2022

Mothers are more likely to be the primary caregiver in the home. Nationally, the median annual pay for a woman who holds a full-time-year-round job is $50,982. The median annual pay for a man is $61,417, a gap of $10,435 . Despite significant improvements in women's career prospects, the gender pay gap still persists, and one crucial component as to why women on average earn lower wages than men is parenthood . Claudia Goldin, author of “Career & Family: Women’s Century Long Journey toward Equity” sums it up, “The problem is mainly — but not entirely — children take time and careers take time and they vie for the same time .” For women, the time with the children takes precedence over time at work. Caring for children falls largely on women and the time women spend in the … [Read more...] about What Does Caring For Children Cost Mothers?
NEW YORK (Reuters) -Four Belarusian government officials have been charged in the United States with aircraft piracy for diverting a Ryanair flight last May to arrest a dissident Belarusian journalist who was on board, U.S. prosecutors said on Thursday. The charges announced by the U.S. Department of Justice escalate the global uproar over the May 23, 2021, forced landing in Minsk of the Ryanair flight and detention of the journalist Roman Protasevich and his Russian girlfriend. Belarus already has faced a wave of sanctions, including travel bans and asset freezes, from the United States, the European Union, Britain and Canada over the diverted flight, which U.S. authorities said was targeted by a false bomb threat. Four U.S. citizens were among the approximately 132 passengers and crew members aboard the flight, prosecutors said. The defendants were charged in a one-count indictment alleging conspiracy to commit aircraft piracy on a plane where a U.S. national was aboard, … [Read more...] about U.S. charges Belarus officials with aircraft piracy over diverted Ryanair flight
