China property think tank apologises for high vacancy rate report
- A + A BEIJING (Aug 11): A Chinese property think tank owned by KE Holdings apologised on Thursday for sparking a heated public discussion with its report on rising housing vacancy rates in China, and that its assessment may not be sufficiently accurate. Beike Research Institute on Aug. 5 published a report after conducting a survey warning of oversupply in China's property market due to high rates of unoccupied homes in major Chinese cities. "The survey takes whether a home has been unoccupied for three straight months as an indicator, which does not fully reflect the real situation," said Beike in a statement published on its WeChat account. New US monkeypox vaccine strategy could be huge boost for supply, but much is unknown
(CNN) In an effort to stretch the limited supply of the Jynneos monkeypox vaccine, federal health officials this week authorized giving smaller doses using a different method of injection. With more than 10,000 monkeypox cases in the United States and vaccine demand remaining high, Jynneos has been in short supply for weeks. The new injection strategy allows health-care providers to give shallow injections intradermally, in between layers of the skin, with one-fifth the standard dose size instead of subcutaneously, into the fatty layer below the skin, with the larger dose. FDA authorizes change in how monkeypox vaccine is given, stretching supply amid high demand Yet the specific efficacy data for the vaccine is not clear, and some experts argue that not enough is known about how the low-dose intradermal strategy might affect the protection it provides in the real world. Even at the original dosage size, "there is no traditional … [Read more...] about New US monkeypox vaccine strategy could be huge boost for supply, but much is unknown
An electrical engineer explains how semiconductors are made
1. What is a semiconductor? Generally speaking, the term semiconductor refers to a material—like silicon—that can conduct electricity much better than an insulator such as glass, but not as well as metals like copper or aluminum. But when people are talking about semiconductors today , they are usually referring to semiconductor chips. advertisement These chips are typically made from thin slices of silicon with complex components laid out on them in specific patterns. These patterns control the flow of current using electrical switches, called transistors, in much the same way you control the electrical current in your home by flipping a switch to turn on a light. The difference between your house and a semiconductor chip is that semiconductor switches are entirely electrical—no mechanical components to flip—and the chips contain tens of billions of switches in an area not much larger than the size of a fingernail. 2. What do semiconductors do? … [Read more...] about An electrical engineer explains how semiconductors are made

Dubbed “Webb’s First Deep Field,” it will be the highest-resolution infrared view of the universe to date, according to NASA. On Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. ET, NASA will release the rest of the telescope’s first batch of images, which will shed light on the cosmic minutiae behind the life of a star, from its origin as a heavy gas cloud to its violent stellar death, as well as the secrets of distant exoplanets and clusters of faraway galaxies—offering insight, even, into whether their atmospheres might be ripe for extraterrestrial life. These images are the fruit of a project over two decades in the making. As NASA’s … [Read more...] about Watch live: NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has peered deeper into the universe than ever before
