Asian Review: More $000s Than Heroes Of Late
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin At this fall’s Forbes Global CEO Conference in Bangkok, I asked a panel of wisemen: Where is the transformative national leader of our day, akin to Lee Kuan Yew in 1960s Singapore or (forgetting Tiananmen) Deng Xiaoping in China? Worldwide, I suggested Abiy Ahmed, the peace-and-prosperity young reformer who is prime minister of Ethiopia. Were he to succeed in a country more populous than the Philippines, Africa’s chronically-beset Sahel region would be transformed. The panelists didn’t offer much. Sinophile Allan Zeman suggested Xi Jinping. Sorry, Allan, but I meant positive transformations. The implication of this exercise for Asia-Pacific in particular is that in an era when vast new possibilities loom, when widespread affluence has replaced common poverty in much of the region, public governance isn’t up to the raised expectations. The most crying shame is Aung San Suu Kyi in Myanmar, a tragedy of missed opportunity. But … [Read more...] about Asian Review: More $000s Than Heroes Of Late

This transcript has been edited for length and clarity. David D. Stewart: Welcome to the podcast. I'm David Stewart, editor in chief of Tax Notes Today International . This week: supersize sales tax. In the process of organizing the newly elected Congress, proponents of a plan to implement a national sales tax got a commitment to have their plan considered. To learn more about it, first we'll hear from Doug Sword, a Tax Notes reporter who's been following this issue in Congress. Later, we'll talk with Tax Notes contributing editor Robert … [Read more...] about A Closer Look At The National Sales Tax Proposal
LANGER: Here’s The GOP’s Best Bet For Achieving Its Agenda In A Divided Congress
On Feb. 1, Rep. James Comer’s (R-KY) House Committee on Oversight and Accountability will hold its first hearing of the year. The committee’s posture and tone in this first meeting will prove consequential for the Republican cause. With party power split among the two congressional chambers, Republican members won’t find many opportunities to legislate this year. What they will find, however, is the opportunity to change minds and policies through their investigatory powers. And for the GOP, no committee holds more keys in this important respect than Comer’s committee. Comer knows it, which is why he promised the “most exciting committee” in congressional history on Friday. With firebrands of the likes of Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene, Lauren Boebert, and Paul Gosar serving with Comer, and given that the Oversight Committee can hold hearings on all the made-for-TV issues, like Hunter Biden corruption and President Biden’s mishandling of classified documents, it … [Read more...] about LANGER: Here’s The GOP’s Best Bet For Achieving Its Agenda In A Divided Congress
Abrams Is The Best Main Battle Tank In The World. But Improving It Should Still Be A Priority.
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Fighting in Ukraine has settled into a stalemate reminiscent of the Western Front circa 1916. Lots of artillery barrages and trenches, but little real movement. A favorite adjective of observers for describing the current fighting is “grinding,” as in two adversaries grinding each other down. Short of using nuclear weapons, there are two basic solutions for escaping this kind of attrition warfare. One is to use aircraft to fly over the front lines and attack the enemy’s rear. The other is to use massed armor to drive through those lines. Western nations have now opted for the second option by delivering tanks and other armored vehicles to Kyiv. America will send the Abrams main battle tank, Britain will send Challengers, and Germany will permit the transfer of Leopards. There isn’t much mystery which of these systems is superior in terms of lethality and survivability. It’s the M1A2 Abrams, named for Vietnam-era … [Read more...] about Abrams Is The Best Main Battle Tank In The World. But Improving It Should Still Be A Priority.

The Rise Of The Citizen Developer To Accelerate Business Efficiency
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Katie is Chief Product Officer at Adjust , a mobile marketing analytics platform trusted by growth-driven marketers around the world. According to management consulting firm Korn Ferry , the global talent shortage is expected to reach $85.2 million by 2030, with companies around the world standing to lose over $8 trillion in lost revenue due to a lack of skilled workers. The Son Of A Single Mom, He Rose From Poverty To Lead One Of The World’s Largest Foundations
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Sam Reiman, the director of the $3.4 billion Pittsburgh-based Richard King Mellon Foundation, has given two careful interviews about the circumstances of his childhood. The director of one of the world’s 50 largest foundations, he is also the son of a single mom; he grew up poor and dropped out of high school. But Reiman says he’s never told this particular story to a reporter. It goes to the heart of what it means to be poor in America, the lack of choices, the emotional devastation visited on children and their caregivers, and the narrowing paths for climbing out of poverty. We both get a little bit emotional when he tells it in his well-appointed office, housed in the BNY Mellon tower high above Pittsburgh. The story’s setting is Lancaster, Pa., a down-at-the-heels apartment complex where his mom struggled to pay the rent. Sam was 11 then, one of three children; his parents had divorced when he was young. The secret workshop in Mumbai for Paris Fashion Week
Julien Fournie works with a company called Creations By Shanagar in Mumbai. (Image credit: shanagarofficial/Instagram) Sitting in a lotus position, four men weave glittering beads through gold thread on an organza sheet, carefully constructing a wedding dress that will soon wow crowds at Paris Fashion Week . For once, the French couturier behind the design, Julien Fournie , is determined to put these craftsmen in the spotlight: his new collection, showing in Paris on Tuesday, is entirely made with fabrics from Mumbai . He says a sort of "design imperialism" means that French fashion houses often play down the fact that their fabrics are made outside France. "The houses which don't admit it are perhaps afraid of losing their clientele," Fournie told AFP. But that is absurd, he continued. Read More "India is number one in the world in embroidery.
