Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Every season, Paris sees a whole new batch of hotels open their doors, which can make it hard to keep up. These last few months, the French capital has welcomed offshoots of international big hitters, including a Bvlgari hotel with a sense of service that'll be hard for other properties to match, and a first urban property for Cheval Blanc. Revamps of the Saint James chateau-hotel and historic Lancaster have also made it onto the list, as well as openings of smaller boutique hotels for explorers looking to put a different spin on the city. Bvlgari Hotel Paris About as haute as it gets, the Bvlgari Paris opened earlier this year, joining locations across the world from Bali to London. Sporting a seriously sleek look that screams Italian glamor without so much as a hint of rococo, the brand, that is set to continue its expansion on home ground in Rome, Tokyo and Los Angeles, has discreetly glided into the top spot when it … [Read more...] about Inside Paris’ New Crop Of Chic Hotels: 8 Places To Stay

Omicron Is Overwhelming New York’s Quarantine Hotel System
(Representative image) For much of the pandemic, one way that the city has tried to slow the coronavirus’s spread is by offering free hotel rooms to infected people who cannot easily isolate themselves from those they live with. But the sheer number of people who are sick with the omicron variant may be overwhelming the hotel program — both for the general public and another for people in homeless shelters. Inside one Brooklyn shelter this week, 11 women who had tested positive for the virus were crowded into a small room furnished with only a few mattresses on the floor and several chairs, two of the women said. Three people who tried to take advantage of the main hotel-quarantine system said Thursday that they either had waited days before getting a room, given up and paid for one themselves, or been stuck on hold for hours on a city hotline without anyone ever picking up. Others have posted messages on Twitter about their own long waits. “I requested a hotel over 5 … [Read more...] about Omicron Is Overwhelming New York’s Quarantine Hotel System
SpaceX Starlink Satellites Are Running Into ‘Squalls’ Of Near Misses With Space Junk
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Over 2,000 Starlink broadband satellites have been launched to low-earth orbit by SpaceX in recent years. The constellation manages to avoid crashing into its own satellites and other spacecraft, but a more pressing concern may be smaller bits of debris. Speaking at a small satellite conference in Utah over the weekend, one orbital data analyst said his company detected a “conjunction squall” impacting Starlink satellites on August 6. A conjunction is space-speak for a potential collision, or at least a potential near miss that’s a little close for comfort. More simply put, some Starlink satellites had stumbled into the debris field from a November, 2021 Russian anti-satellite weapons demonstration in which the Kremlin destroyed its own defunct satellite, Cosmos 1408 . SpaceX automatically detects and adjusts for potential conjunctions. The company has said that it performed over 6,000 maneuvers to avoid … [Read more...] about SpaceX Starlink Satellites Are Running Into ‘Squalls’ Of Near Misses With Space Junk

The Gilded Age For Modern Travelers: What It’s Like To Stay At The St. Regis New York
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin At the turn of the century, New York served as the epicenter of America’s Gilded Age. Those who have seen the period drama know that city socialite Caroline Astor hosted lavish parties at her Fifth Avenue mansion. One of her five children, Colonel John Jacob “Jack” Astor IV, went on to become one of the wealthiest men in America. He pursued the family business, including the development of grand hotels, and in so doing, left travelers 118 years later with a glimpse of a bygone era at The St. Regis New York . The French Beaux-Arts style hotel debuted on September 4th, 1904. Some historians consider the inn for the upper crust the apogee of Astor’s career. Unfortunately, his life was cut short at 47. He died in the sinking of the RMS Titanic in 1912, though not before helping his young, pregnant wife escape on a lifeboat. Writers often recount this story in profiles of the hotel, though I choose to mention it not … [Read more...] about The Gilded Age For Modern Travelers: What It’s Like To Stay At The St. Regis New York
This Hot New Vacation Spot Could Be Underwater Within 15 Years
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin ISLA HOLBOX, MEXICO - While the wind-roiled waters of the Gulf of Mexico lash the shores of this narrow island less than 100 yards away, barefoot construction workers trudge through puddles of mud and shin-deep standing waters left by recent rains to lay the foundation for much-needed road improvements. The workers' struggle to keep the slurry from immediately filling in the trenches they're digging could be just as futile as keeping this road open 10-15 years from now if worst-case scenario estimates about rising sea levels pan out. Road construction amid rain puddles on Isla Holbox, Mexico. (Credit: Eric Mack) The way things have been going with the latest projections, that's how soon it could be that this street is permanently under sea water rather than just temporarily swamped by torrential rains. The upgrades to the current grid of sandy streets used by the small island community's ubiquitous golf carts … [Read more...] about This Hot New Vacation Spot Could Be Underwater Within 15 Years
