MANILA, Philippines — Quezon City and Metro Manila led the list of cities and regions, respectively, with the most number of new COVID-19 cases recorded on Saturday, independent pandemic monitor OCTA Research said on Sunday. The Department of Health’s COVID-19 tracker on Saturday showed 777 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total number of active cases to 6,425. OCTA Research fellow Guido David, in a social media post, said that Quezon City accounted for 74 of the 353 new cases recorded in Metro Manila. The City of Manila had the second most number of new COVID-19 cases in Metro Manila with 52, followed by Makati City (39) and Pasig City (31). COVID-19 positivity rate up in Metro Manila, 5 provinces
FILE PHOTO The number of people found positive for COVID-19 out of all those tested in Metro Manila and five provinces has risen above the 5-percent World Health Organization (WHO) benchmark that indicates containment of the coronavirus in a given location, but the Department of Health (DOH) was not alarmed. Data from the independent pandemic monitor OCTA Research on Friday showed that the positivity rate, the proportion of the people tested who came out positive, jumped from 3.0 percent on June 18 to 5.6 percent on June 22 in the National Capital Region (NCR). The WHO considers an area has contained infections when it has kept the positivity rate to 5 percent or less for 14 days. OCTA also recorded positivity rates above 5 percent in the provinces of Batangas, Cavite, Laguna, Rizal and Iloilo. In a statement Wednesday , Japan’s aid agency said it signed this week with the MMDA the records of discussion for the comprehensive traffic management plan for Metro Manila project. This technical cooperation project, which will start next year and end in 2022, was aimed at mitigating road traffic congestion along Metro Manila’s major corridors, Jica said. The Philippines’ summer capital, known for its cool air and pine trees, has been the favorite refuge of Filipinos wanting to escape the scorching heat in Metro Manila and other parts of the country. But while Baguio City remains the coolest place in the country, it has been feeling the heat of climate change, registering an unusually higher heat index of 27 degrees Celsius last month, exacerbated by the steady loss of its tree cover. Just as well that its city council has recently proposed a five-year moratorium on tree-cutting activities to protect its trees.
