Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The first time I went to Portugal’s Azores islands to check out the White hotel, shortly after it opened nearly five years ago, the owners, João and Catarina Reis, told me they had taken their inspiration from a particular hotel in Santorini—all whitewashed floors, driftwood and macrame. “It’s white,” added João at the time, “so there will be no colors to distract you” from the blues and greens of the ocean and the hills of São Miguel, one of the most spectacular islands in the world . It was all quite lovely, and done well enough to inspire many of the design-forward boutique hotels that followed in the Azores—along with the Reis’s other hotel, Santa Bárbara , it was a pioneer in luxury travel in the archipelago—but truth be told, it felt a little out of place. I like Santorini style, but this is a very different island. The Reises recognized that too, and so this winter, they closed the ten-room, clifftop hotel … [Read more...] about One Of The Azores’ Best Boutique Hotels, White, Gets A Makeover

Denver Art Museum named one of the world’s best “new” museums
The Denver Art Museum has been selected as one of the world’s best museums, in league with Antwerp, Belgium’s Momu and architectural wonders such as Oslo’s Munch Museum and Tokyo’s Murakami Library. The honor, doled out in a May 3 list from Condé Nast Traveler, was part of the magazine’s Best New Museums in the World: 2022 Hot List. While the Denver Art Museum has been around in some form since 1893 , Condé Nast looked at the museum’s nearly five-year, $175 million renovation-addition project that was recently completed and decided it was enough to justify the “new museum” moniker. The magazine noted that the museum reopened in late 2021 with new, interconnected galleries, pavilions and a restaurant. “Smithsonian in its scope, the campus’ eight-story Martin Building — designed by Italian modernist Gio Ponti, and the world’s first high-rise museum when it was built in 1971 — offers an ambitious look at the art of the Americas,” according to the 2022 Hot List. “Entire floors … [Read more...] about Denver Art Museum named one of the world’s best “new” museums

Your Next Romantic Getaway: WHITE Exclusive Suites & Villas in the Azores, Portugal
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Despite growing up in a country full of beautiful palaces and pousadas, the owner of the new WHITE boutique hotel took his inspiration from the other edge of Europe. João Reis so loved a particular hotel in Santorini that, he says, “I’d rather spend four nights there, in a 65-square-meter room [about 700 square feet], than two weeks at a regular big resort.” So when he set about opening his second hotel, on a seaside clifftop on São Miguel island in the Azores (after the popular Santa Barbara on the opposite coast), he choose whitewash and driftwood over tiles and terra-cotta. “It’s white so there will be no colors to distract you” from the jaw-dropping views of green hills and blue ocean. The swimming pool Paulo Goulart Integration with nature is the goal, and it’s achieved with rough volcanic stone, rope, metal, cotton, plants and the occasional living wall—as well as big windows, a wide terrace and a … [Read more...] about Your Next Romantic Getaway: WHITE Exclusive Suites & Villas in the Azores, Portugal
Inside The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas’s Impressive Block 16 Urban Food Hall
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Block 16 Urban Food Hall at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas Photo: Jeff Green / Courtesy of the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas When the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas opened in 2010, it became the hotel for the well-heeled crowd. Dark interiors with purple accents gave the hotel a seductive vibe, only further driven home by the lobby’s 15-foot digital art columns that often showed silhouettes of unclothed women. Majority of its spacious rooms were outfitted with balconies, an unparalleled offering to this day. And its Chandelier lounge, draped in illuminated beads, was where you went to see and be seen. Over the past year, the property has undergone some changes, adding in ultra-exclusive penthouses for their high rollers; switching up their stores to include Sin City–appropriate necessities like Drybar and Reviv; and revamping their food and beverage program to include New York City and Los Angeles favorites like Momofuku … [Read more...] about Inside The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas’s Impressive Block 16 Urban Food Hall
