The disdain shown by a large majority of the population to intellectual property rights discourages innovation at the domestic level, motivates the innovators to immigrate to foreign shores and register their innovations there. (Representative image) The total apathy of common Indians towards the intellectual property rights (IPR) of the originators is appalling. The use of pirated software, photocopied books, spurious books sold on traffic signals and footpaths, unauthorised copies of branded clothes and so on is unapologetically common. Propriety and ethics are not taught in schools. It is common to see parents encouraging their wards to buy the “cheaper” alternative regardless of its legality and authenticity. Many cities have infamous “markets” for pirated software and duplicate merchandise. Driving out from Delhi NCR region to nearby Uttar Pradesh and Haryana towns, one comes across “Bhatura King”, a fast-food joint chain. The name and logo used by this chain are cannily … [Read more...] about Why is an infringement of intellectual property acceptable but not royalty payments?

American Dream Mall—Touted As Retail’s Future—Now Seems More Like A Nightmare For Its Owner
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Owners don’t typically tell a public audience that they wish their sparkling new $5 billion shopping center had burned to the ground. But then you’d need a heart of stone not to empathize with the sentiment behind Kurt Hagen’s startling words when he addressed local council leaders last month. The American Dream mega-mall, tipped as the future of retail in America, is in danger of costing owner Triple Five Group dear, as its New Jersey complex rapidly descends into the stuff of nightmares. As a result, Triple Five has put up nearly half the ongoing profits of two of North America’s largest malls – Mall of America, Minn. and West Edmonton Mall, Canada – in order to appease circling creditors. Yet the question at the heart of this multi-billion-dollar story is how a scheme, just a 30-minute ride from Manhattan, that embodies real estate's futuristic vision of mixing retail, leisure, entertainment and dining within one … [Read more...] about American Dream Mall—Touted As Retail’s Future—Now Seems More Like A Nightmare For Its Owner
Why AI And Checkout-Free Technology Will Grow In 2023
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Krishna Motukuri, CEO & cofounder of Zippin , a leading provider of checkout-free technology for retailers. Many of the biggest technology headlines in 2022 were about artificial intelligence (AI). Commercial and enterprise applications of generative AI such as ChatGPT are already making a big splash in 2023, but what about the retail industry? Here, the impact of AI is likely to widen and deepen this year. AI in particular may have an outsized impact on physical stores. It can be easy to forget that, amidst all the talk about e-commerce, most people still do the vast majority of their shopping in bricks and mortar stores. In 2022, physical stores still accounted for 87% of total retail sales in the U.S. Online retail continues to grow, but the bump in adoption caused by the pandemic has fallen back significantly and growth has slowed. This is especially true in food retail, where it has been estimated … [Read more...] about Why AI And Checkout-Free Technology Will Grow In 2023
Phuket Diving: PADI centers clean up Phuket
PHUKET: After coming face to face with shattered coral reef systems all over the world and confronting messes of plastic bags and tangled fishing nets, which are not-so-slowly strangling one of the world’s most important ecosystems, divers understand the importance of reef cleanups. There is of course that feeling of only delaying the inevitable, but isn’t that why we try to stop smoking and start exercising at some-point? On Phuket, PADI, the world’s largest scuba diver training agency, and Project AWARE Foundation , a nonprofit environmental organization, is launching a collaborative “ Dive for Debris ” event, with around 25 PADI Dive Centers putting aside their profits, digging into their own pockets and attempting to make a difference with Phuket’s biggest reef cleanup. Project AWARE Foundation is a nonprofit group established to organize divers and make a positive impact on the world’s oceans. The foundation established its first International Cleanup Day in 1993, with … [Read more...] about Phuket Diving: PADI centers clean up Phuket

As AI war rages, Korea seeks a place among giants
Google CEO Sundar Pichai [REUTERS/YONHAP] Amid the accelerated rivalry for artificial intelligence (AI) leadership between Microsoft and Google, Korea's tech companies are eyeing the non-English speaking countries with their capabilities in search engine and messenger services. Whereas the ChatGPT — a free chatbot system capable of generating conversational dialogue — displays a surprising level of sophistication in response to English language prompts, the Korean version of its service is lacking. And that might leave an opening for a niche market for local competitors. On Tuesday, Microsoft said that it will incorporate Open AI’s GPT technology into its Bing search engine. “This technology is going to reshape pretty much every software category that we know,” said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. The updated version of Bing will have a conversational interface similar to ChatGPT. The goal is to have the unpopular search engine compete against Google. Yala beat Phuket FC, 1-0
PHUKET CITY: Surakul Stadium remains less than a fortress for Phuket FC as the “Sea Dragons” were once again beaten on home soil, this time suffering a 1-0 defeat to last-place Yala. With the win, Yala picked up their first-ever points in the league after four consecutive losses. After five matches in the fledgling Division 2 of the Footbool Association of Thailand, high-flying Satun top the table with 13 points, followed by Nakhon Sri Thammarat (12) and Narathiwat (11). In a match that could have gone either way, a lapse in defense led to a goal by Yala about half way through the second half. It was only the second goal of the season for Yala, who had already given up nine, and their players were understandably happy with the result.
