Blame The Venture Capitalists for the Collapse Of SVB?
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin On Thursday, March 16, 2023, The New York Times NYT published, I Was an S.V.B. Client. I Blame the Venture Capitalists , by Elizabeth Spiers, a depositor at Silicon Valley Bank. In this article she states: “There’s plenty to say about how the bank brought this about — making risky investments, issuing communications that did more to alarm than explain. But as I hit refresh on my account balance Monday morning, I was thinking of the high-prestige venture capitalists who herded start-ups like mine to S.V.B. They’re the reason the bank was so overloaded with risky clients, and they’re also the ones who panicked at the first rumors of trouble — and advised their portfolio companies to flee, initiating the bank run that brought the whole thing tumbling down.” From an Estate Planning perspective, the issue is not so much what the venture capitalists did, as much as how they came to the decision they did to … [Read more...] about Blame The Venture Capitalists for the Collapse Of SVB?

POV: How work arrangements played a part in the collapse of Credit Suisse and SVB
The world watched in shock as Credit Suisse, one of the most established global banking and financial services institutions, collapsed and was eventually acquired by UBS. I believe a significant factor in Credit Suisse’s downfall was its rigid stance on forcing staff to return to the office. This cautionary tale serves as a reminder for business leaders to adapt to the changing world of work and prioritize their workforce’s needs and preferences. The Iron Fist: Credit Suisse’s return to office policy In stark contrast to the growing trend of many companies embracing a flexible hybrid work approach, Credit Suisse took a more traditional approach, mandating that staff return to the office three days a week. According to one banker there, “they’re removing our flexibility, and it doesn’t feel great.” In May 2022, the bank’s leadership originally supported flexibility and hybrid work as evidenced by then-CEO Thomas Gottstein professing that a return to office was “not … [Read more...] about POV: How work arrangements played a part in the collapse of Credit Suisse and SVB
The mindset shift you need in order to stop your inner voice from sabotaging you
One of my favorite lines in a song comes from—wait for it—Katy Perry’s Roar : “I stood for nothing, so I fell for everything,” which is a cue for my youngest daughter to sprint to her costume pile, and the rest of my family to start dancing like crazy around our house. Anytime I am in a situation where I feel like keeping my hand down instead of raising it or swallowing a comment because I felt like my voice wasn’t the most important one in the room, I remember that line. If you don’t stand up for yourself, you are allowing someone else to choose your path. It’s only when you find your voice and stand your ground that you realize you always had the ability to do it, you just had to stand up for yourself. As often happens in my life, I learned this lesson the hard way, as a charity auctioneer. Tell me if this sounds familiar. You walk into a meeting filled with people of all ages and genders. This scenario doesn’t have to be in an office, it could be a classroom, a … [Read more...] about The mindset shift you need in order to stop your inner voice from sabotaging you
A Harvard brain doctor explains 7 easy ways to eat healthy at work
The holidays are approaching, and so too are company holiday parties, family gatherings, and so-called treats filling up work candy dishes. What’s more—hosting and traveling may stifle our ability to do meal prep over the weekend, leaving us to fend for ourselves and foraging in the fridge for a quick lunch between Zoom meetings. Or forgetting to make that healthy salad and snack for work at the office. But as most everyone could attest, fueling with healthier choices enables us to enjoy the celebrations more, and bounce back more easily. As a nutritional psychiatrist, much of my work comprises creating tailored nutrition plans that prioritize balance and sustainability for both our mental and metabolic health. Here’s how to keep the holiday cheer alive while making balanced meal choices. Mix it up One of my favorites easy snacks to have on hand that feels just like a holiday celebration is a quick nut mix. Simply combine equal portions of plain raw almonds, pecans, … [Read more...] about A Harvard brain doctor explains 7 easy ways to eat healthy at work
Violence vs women, kids: Why SC tagged marital infidelity as a crime
COMPOSITE IMAGE: DANIELLA MARIE AGACER (INQ STOCK PHOTOS) MANILA, Philippines—A recent Supreme Court (SC) decision strengthened a 2004 law, which seeks to address the prevalence of violence against women and their children (VAWC) by their intimate partners. Looking back, no less than former presidents Rodrigo Duterte and Joseph Estrada had flaunted their philandering ways. Sometimes, they even appear to be trivializing what they’re doing, making it less complex than it really is. But as Psych Central said, “infidelity can have lasting impacts on partners and children the couple may have,” stressing that “grief, brain changes, behaviors down the road, and mental health conditions such as anxiety, chronic stress, and depression can result.” Now, almost 20 years since Republic Act (RA) No. 9262, or the Anti-Violence Against Women and their Children Act, was enacted into law, the SC held that marital infidelity is one of the forms of psychological violence, which can be penalized … [Read more...] about Violence vs women, kids: Why SC tagged marital infidelity as a crime
Kira Balinger denies third party accusations against her: I don’t run after men, they come to me
Image: Instagram/@kira_balinger Kira Balinger dismissed the allegations that she was the reason behind Kelvin Miranda’s split with his ex-girlfriend, social media personality Roselle Vytiaco, with the actress stressing that she does not steal or run after men, and that they just come to her. Earlier this year, Vytiaco exposed Miranda’s alleged infidelity with Balinger by showing a screenshot of the actors’ conversation. A part of the conversation showed Balinger’s supposed suggestive request to “take something off,” as well as Miranda’s alleged confession of his feelings for the actress. Balinger broke her silence on the issue in an interview with Philippine Entertainment Portal during the press conference of her upcoming film “Maple Leaf Dreams” last Tuesday, March 21. “Hindi po ako third wheel. Kung ano po ‘yung naging usapan nilang dalawa ng ex nila, wala po akong alam du’n, out na po ako du’n (I was not a third wheel. Whatever the two exes talked about, I know nothing … [Read more...] about Kira Balinger denies third party accusations against her: I don’t run after men, they come to me

New ventures drive growth for LG Energy Solution
KooRoo’s battery swapping station [LG ENERGY SOLUTION] LG Energy Solution is pushing ahead with its new businesses and focusing on future growth with in-house ventures KooRoo and AVEL, the battery manufacturing unit of LG Group said. KooRoo, established last year, is seeking to commercialize its battery swapping stations (BSS), which increase the convenience for users of electric motorbikes by allowing them to swap out a used battery for a fully-charged one rather than having to spend time charging the original battery. The service addresses a lot of the issues raised by electric vehicle users, including the long charge time, relatively short distance that can be traveled and high maintenance costs. “If the electric motorbike battery ecosystem grows, it will help delivery services, be eco-friendly, quiet and safe," said Ahn Hong-duk, head of KooRoo. “We are set to initiate developing exclusive BSS battery packs and stations and plan to build up the electric motorcycle … [Read more...] about New ventures drive growth for LG Energy Solution
