Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin It’s nothing new when your stubborn aging parent refuses help. Maybe they have been generally stubborn for as long as you can remember. But with aging, you see them less and less able to do things, and you worry. Aging takes its toll on independence with everyday things like shopping, driving, cooking, and laundry. It can make even bathing and walking risky. When you notice these things and speak up, you get immediately rebuffed. Sometimes a fall or other injury gets your attention again and you try again to talk them into getting help. You suggest hiring someone or even moving to assisted living. Nothing doing, they say. “I’m fine”. But you know they’re not. How far can you take this? Can you make them come to a good decision? The Roots of Stubbornness Often, the emotion behind the refusal of help is fear. Most of us do have fear of losing control over our lives. Logic has little to do with this, as fear … [Read more...] about Should You Push Your Stubborn Parents Who Refuse Elder Care?

The US Needs More Immigrants To Care For Frail Older Adults
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The US desperately needs more direct care workers to provide personal assistance to frail older adults and younger people with disabilities. Many native-born Americans were unwilling to do this work even before the Covid-19 pandemic. Now, shortages are far worse . Yet, the US continues to bar entry to those who are willing and able to care for frail older adults and people with disabilities—immigrants. This week, I participated in a fascinating Brookings Institution panel discussion on immigrants and caregiving. Some panelists were immigration experts, two of us came from the long-term care world. Yet our conclusion was unanimous: Without a substantial increase in immigrant care workers, the shortage of people available to provide personal assistance will not abate anytime soon. Yet, even as President Biden slowly unwinds some of the Trump Administration’s highly restrictive immigration rules, many curbs remain in … [Read more...] about The US Needs More Immigrants To Care For Frail Older Adults
China warns US a ‘dangerous situation’ forming over Taiwan
- A + A (May 19): China’s top diplomat again warned the US over its increased support for Taiwan, showing the island democracy remains a major sticking point between the world’s biggest economies as Beijing sent more military aircraft toward the island. “If the US side insists on playing the Taiwan card and goes further and further down the wrong road, it will certainly lead to a dangerous situation,” Yang Jiechi, Beijing’s top diplomat, said in a phone call with National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan. Yang said Washington should “have a clear understanding of the situation,” according to a statement posted online by his nation’s Foreign Ministry. “China will certainly take firm action to safeguard its sovereignty and security interests,” he added. The White House issued a short statement on the Wednesday call, saying the pair “focused on regional security issues and nonproliferation.” They also discussed Russia’s war against Ukraine and specific issues in … [Read more...] about China warns US a ‘dangerous situation’ forming over Taiwan

‘The Kardashians’ shows how Kim Kardashian helped save Julius Jones from death row. But there’s more to the story
By Marianne Garvey Updated 1419 GMT (2219 HKT) May 19, 2022 (CNN) One of the first times Antoinette Jones, the sister of former death row inmate Julius Jones , who was granted clemency last year mere hours before he was scheduled to be executed for a 1999 murder he says he did not commit, met Kim Kardashian she was struck. Not just by Kardashian's superstar presence but by her sincerity and calm nature. "I'm a little different than other people. I see more than what people show on the outside. I kind of pay attention to, like, words that come outta people's mouths," she tells CNN. For Jones, who watched "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" since it began airing on E!, the conversations she had with Kardashian are reflective of the person she thinks more people should hear about: The Kim Kardashian who will go with you to church, give you a hug or sit in your home for a conversation. "When she spoke to my parents, she spoke to them like they were her aunt or like they … [Read more...] about ‘The Kardashians’ shows how Kim Kardashian helped save Julius Jones from death row. Malaysia’s biggest telcos seek majority stake in 5G agency
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's four largest telecommunications firms are seeking a majority stake in a state 5G agency, countering a proposal by the government to offer them minority ownership, according to a letter sent by the firms to the finance ministry.
