Honoring parents object lesson

Should You Push Your Stubborn Parents Who Refuse Elder Care?

May 14, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin It’s nothing new when your stubborn aging parent refuses help. Maybe they have been generally stubborn for as long as you can remember. But with aging, you see them less and less able to do things, and you worry. Aging takes its toll on independence with everyday things like shopping, driving, cooking, and laundry. It can make even bathing and walking risky. When you notice these things and speak up, you get immediately rebuffed. Sometimes a fall or other injury gets your attention again and you try again to talk them into getting help. You suggest hiring someone or even moving to assisted living. Nothing doing, they say. “I’m fine”. But you know they’re not. How far can you take this? Can you make them come to a good decision? The Roots of Stubbornness Often, the emotion behind the refusal of help is fear. Most of us do have fear of losing control over our lives. Logic has little to do with this, as fear … [Read more...] about Should You Push Your Stubborn Parents Who Refuse Elder Care?

The US Needs More Immigrants To Care For Frail Older Adults

April 21, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The US desperately needs more direct care workers to provide personal assistance to frail older adults and younger people with disabilities. Many native-born Americans were unwilling to do this work even before the Covid-19 pandemic. Now, shortages are far worse . Yet, the US continues to bar entry to those who are willing and able to care for frail older adults and people with disabilities—immigrants. This week, I participated in a fascinating Brookings Institution panel discussion on immigrants and caregiving. Some panelists were immigration experts, two of us came from the long-term care world. Yet our conclusion was unanimous: Without a substantial increase in immigrant care workers, the shortage of people available to provide personal assistance will not abate anytime soon. Yet, even as President Biden slowly unwinds some of the Trump Administration’s highly restrictive immigration rules, many curbs remain in … [Read more...] about The US Needs More Immigrants To Care For Frail Older Adults

China warns US a ‘dangerous situation’ forming over Taiwan

May 19, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A (May 19): China’s top diplomat again warned the US over its increased support for Taiwan, showing the island democracy remains a major sticking point between the world’s biggest economies as Beijing sent more military aircraft toward the island. “If the US side insists on playing the Taiwan card and goes further and further down the wrong road, it will certainly lead to a dangerous situation,” Yang Jiechi, Beijing’s top diplomat, said in a phone call with National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan. Yang said Washington should “have a clear understanding of the situation,” according to a statement posted online by his nation’s Foreign Ministry. “China will certainly take firm action to safeguard its sovereignty and security interests,” he added. The White House issued a short statement on the Wednesday call, saying the pair “focused on regional security issues and nonproliferation.” They also discussed Russia’s war against Ukraine and specific issues in … [Read more...] about China warns US a ‘dangerous situation’ forming over Taiwan

‘The Kardashians’ shows how Kim Kardashian helped save Julius Jones from death row. But there’s more to the story

May 19, 2022 by edition.cnn.com

By Marianne Garvey Updated 1419 GMT (2219 HKT) May 19, 2022 (CNN) One of the first times Antoinette Jones, the sister of former death row inmate Julius Jones , who was granted clemency last year mere hours before he was scheduled to be executed for a 1999 murder he says he did not commit, met Kim Kardashian she was struck. Not just by Kardashian's superstar presence but by her sincerity and calm nature. "I'm a little different than other people. I see more than what people show on the outside. I kind of pay attention to, like, words that come outta people's mouths," she tells CNN. For Jones, who watched "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" since it began airing on E!, the conversations she had with Kardashian are reflective of the person she thinks more people should hear about: The Kim Kardashian who will go with you to church, give you a hug or sit in your home for a conversation. "When she spoke to my parents, she spoke to them like they were her aunt or like they … [Read more...] about ‘The Kardashians’ shows how Kim Kardashian helped save Julius Jones from death row. 3 ways to manage the stress of being ‘results oriented’

May 18, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

Focusing on outcomes is definitely more meaningful than simply showing up and going through the motions of a job. But oftentimes, being too “results oriented” can just as easily get in the way of our work—particularly if expectations are high, or if we don’t feel like the results are in our control, the work can feel overwhelming. It’s a stressful experience. When it comes to creative work or problem solving, it can also be counterproductive—there’s no easier way to clog up the creative process or to start a creative block . advertisement advertisement Here are three ways to get through analysis paralysis or a fixation with results, and to let go of stress to actually do the work well (excerpted from my book, Creative Doing ): Relax expectations With vision comes expectations. We believe this project will be the one that enables us to break through. It would be weird if we didn’t—there might be less of a point in … [Read more...] about 3 ways to manage the stress of being ‘results oriented’

May 19, 2022 by www.thestar.com.my

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's four largest telecommunications firms are seeking a majority stake in a state 5G agency, countering a proposal by the government to offer them minority ownership, according to a letter sent by the firms to the finance ministry. The four dominant providers - Celcom Axiata Bhd, DiGi Telecommunications, Maxis Bhd and U Mobile - also want a review of the pricing model and network access plan offered by the agency, according to the May 9 letter seen by Reuters. ALSO READ: Ensuring the success of 5G Their objections to the government's proposal, which offered up to 70% of the country's sole 5G network operator spread among a wider group of companies, raise the risk of delays as the government aims to wrap up discussions on the stake sales by end-June. "We would not be able to justify a passive minority investment in this venture without being able to exercise influence and control to safeguard our investment," the letter said. 30 Quotes on Trust That Will Make You Think

February 5, 2015 by www.inc.com

Trust is built and maintained by many small actions over time. Trust is not a matter of technique, tricks, or tools but of character. We are trusted because of our way of being, not because of our polished exteriors or our expertly crafted communications. Here are some quotes that may be useful to consider as you think about the role of trust in your life and leadership: 1. "It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it." -- Warren Buffett 2. "We need people in our lives with whom we can be as open as possible. To have real conversations with people may seem like such a simple, obvious suggestion, but it involves courage and risk." -- Thomas Moore 3. "The glue that holds all relationships together--including the relationship between the leader and the led--is trust, and trust is based on integrity." -- Brian Tracy 4. "Trust is like blood pressure. It's silent, vital to good health, and if abused it can be deadly." … [Read more...] about 30 Quotes on Trust That Will Make You Think
