Philippines establishes coast guard outposts in disputed sea
MANILA, May 20 (AP): The Philippines has established three coast guard outposts on three islands in the disputed South China Sea to monitor ship movements and promote safety, coast guard officials said Friday, amid increasing maritime tensions with China. The move reinforced the presence of Filipino troops on the islands in the hotly contested Spratly archipelago and will likely be frowned upon by Beijing, which has claimed the disputed waterway virtually in its entirety. China has protested any new constructions in the region although it has transformed seven disputed reefs into military-guarded island bases in past years, alarming rival claimant states and the United States, which has no territorial claims but deploys its Navy and Air Force for patrols to ensure freedom of navigation and overflight in the contested waters. Coast guard Admiral Artemio Abu said the outposts on the islands, which were established this week, would be manned by coast guard personnel and equipped … [Read more...] about Philippines establishes coast guard outposts in disputed sea
UPDATE: Russia’s flagship vessel sinks in Black Sea after Ukrainian missile strike
As Russia’s war in Ukraine entered its 50th day, its flagship cruiser has sunk in the Black Sea, after a “fire” onboard caused ammunition explosions. It’s the first major war ship to be taken down by cruise missiles since World War Two. At least, that’s the Ukrainian side of the story. Russia’s Ministry of Defence has released a statement on state media confirming the vessel sank while being pulled to port for repairs in Crimea… “ During the towing of the Moskva cruiser to the port of destination, due to damage to the hull received during the fire from the detonation of ammunition, the ship lost stability. In the conditions of stormy seas, the ship sank.” Russian state media had earlier reported on Wednesday that a fire onboard the ship had detonated ammunition, requiring sailors to abandon ship. They made no mention of a Ukrainian strike, neither did they report any casualties. Russia’s Ministry of Defence has just released a statement about the incident, claiming… “The … [Read more...] about UPDATE: Russia’s flagship vessel sinks in Black Sea after Ukrainian missile strike
SEA Games: PH upset by Cambodia in men’s volleyball, faces must-win vs Thais
Photo from PNVF MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine men’s volleyball team was stunned by a vastly-improved Cambodia side, 21-25, 26-24, 28-30, 27-29, starting off on the wrong foot in the 31st Southeast Asian Games on Saturday at Quang Ninh Gymnasium in Vietnam. The Cambodians, who lost to the Filipino spikers and got eliminated in the preliminary round of the 2019 SEA Games, pounced on the lethargic start of the silver medalists and displayed nerves of steel in their neck-and-neck encounters in the last three sets to earn their first victory in Pool B. Bryan Bagunas and Marck Espejo, who were fresh from their stints in Japan V.League, carried the cudgels of the men’s national team, while Jau Umandal was also instrumental but their costly errors took a toll on their squad as Cambodia nailed the timely hits in the crucial moments of the last two sets. The Philippines is on the brink of elimination in the three-team Pool B, needing to beat Thailand on Monday to advance to the … [Read more...] about SEA Games: PH upset by Cambodia in men’s volleyball, faces must-win vs Thais

Russia denies Ukraine forces damaged navy ship in Black Sea
(Reuters) - Russia on Saturday dismissed Ukraine's claim it had damaged a modern navy logistics ship in the Black Sea and showed photos of what it said was the vessel with no signs of damage. Military authorities in the southern Odesa region said on Thursday that Ukrainian naval forces had struck the Vsevolod Bobrov, setting it alight. In an online post, the Russian defence ministry published photos it said had been taken of the ship on Saturday in the Crimean Black Sea port of Sevastopol. "It is now clear from the photographs that the ship is not damaged at all," it said. Last month the missile cruiser Moskva, the flagship of Russia's Black Sea fleet, sunk after catching fire. Ukraine said it hit the ship with a missile fired from the coast while Moscow blamed an ammunition explosion.
