Official: Buffalo gunman had threatened high school shooting

May 15, 2022 by www.denverpost.com

By CAROLYN THOMPSON and MICHAEL BALSAMO BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — The 18-year-old gunman who authorities say killed 10 people at a Buffalo supermarket had previously threatened a shooting at his high school and was sent for mental health treatment, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press. Payton Gendron had appeared on the radar of police last year after he threatened to carry out a shooting at Susquehanna High School around the time of graduation, the official said. New York State Police said troopers were called to the Conklin school on June 8, 2021, for a report that a 17-year-old student had made threatening statements. Police said the student was taken into custody under a state mental health law and taken to a hospital for an evaluation. The police statement did not give the student’s name. The law enforcement official was not authorized to speak publicly on the investigation and did so on the condition of anonymity. THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. AP’s … [Read more...] about Official: Buffalo gunman had threatened high school shooting

Buffalo Shooting Suspect Made ‘Generalized Threat’ At School Last Year, Police Say

May 15, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline An 18-year-old man accused of killing 10 people in a racially motivated shooting Saturday in Buffalo drew police attention last year after making a threatening statement at his high school, and was given a mental health evaluation at the time, Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia said at a Sunday press conference. Key Facts Payton S. Gendron of Conklin, New York, was arrested yesterday and charged with shooting 13 people—10 fatally—at a Tops Friendly Market store, in what FBI Special Agent Steve Belongia described as a hate crime perpetrated by a racist extremist. Gendron allegedly visited Buffalo on Friday to do reconnaissance in what was apparently the first time he had visited the city, which is 168 miles from Conklin, Gramaglia said. Gendron was not on law enforcement’s radar at the time of the shooting, but he was brought in by police for a mental health evaluation after making a … [Read more...] about Buffalo Shooting Suspect Made ‘Generalized Threat’ At School Last Year, Police Say

Sunday Conversation: Lyle Lovett On New Music, Fatherhood, Songwriting, Cartoons And More

May 15, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Lyle Lovett's masterful new record, 12th of June , is like a primer on the genius of Lovett. After opening with an instrumental jazz cover, "Cookin' At The Continental," the record covers the spectrum of Lovett's musical abilities. There are songs of humor like "Pants Is Overrated," jazzy tunes like "Straighten Up And Fly Right" and then there are songs of stunning, sheer beauty — the title track, "The Mocking Ones" and "Are We Dancing. For Lovett, who hadn't released a studio album in a decade, it was important to cover his full musical spectrum. "For somebody that hadn't heard the large band before, I wanted them to kind of know what it was about," he said when I spoke to him this week. "And then for folks that are familiar with my music, I wanted this record to feel like something that they would want to hear or would expect to hear." Lovett will be taking 12th of June tour this summer as part of a double bill … [Read more...] about Sunday Conversation: Lyle Lovett On New Music, Fatherhood, Songwriting, Cartoons And More

China debates a financial stability guarantee fund

May 16, 2022 by www.bangkokpost.com

A Chinese government proposal for a financial stability guarantee fund to safeguard against systemic risks has attracted attention from many parties. Some have differing opinions on how to best resolve the current financial risks related to defaults and debt reduction, especially among property developers. At the direction of the State Council, the People's Bank of China (PBoC) will take the lead in developing the framework for the fund. Also taking part are the National Development and Reform Commission, the ministries of Justice and Finance, the China Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission (CBIRC), the China Securities Regulatory Commission and the State Administration of Foreign Exchange. Preliminary work is expected to be completed by the end of September. The purpose of the fund is to improve risk prevention and deal with systemic-hidden dangers, a spokesperson for the CBIRC has said. Participants are studying the relevant regulations for the establishment of the fund and … [Read more...] about China debates a financial stability guarantee fund

Some Traits That Make You a Good Entrepreneur Also Make You Susceptible to Addiction. These Strategies Can Help

December 18, 2018 by www.inc.com

In my line of business, which involves the sale of drug testing kits, I run into many a sad story about how addiction has ruined lives and caused an immense amount of grief among people who get hooked on any number of substances, especially opioids . And while you may think I am talking about people who were born into poverty and were down on their luck and looking for an escape (and I've heard those stories, too), I'm not. I'm talking about people who have lived privileged lives, earned college degrees, started successful practices and followed their entrepreneurial dream. David J. Linden, professor of neuroscience at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, says there is some evidence that the traits that make a good entrepreneur also make one susceptible to addiction. It can also be a rather lonely road entrepreneurs walk as they get their businesses off the ground and that, coupled with a constant fear of failure hanging over their heads, may also lead to … [Read more...] about Some Traits That Make You a Good Entrepreneur Also Make You Susceptible to Addiction. Beware a global economy with many little fires

May 16, 2022 by www.bangkokpost.com

Big shocks to the global economy, such as Russia's invasion of Ukraine, understandably capture the most attention. But a new worldwide pattern of "little fires everywhere" may be equally consequential for longer-term economic well-being. Over time, these small fires can coalesce into one that is just as threatening as the initial large fire that acted as the catalyst. In addition to causing widespread death and destruction, and displacing millions of people, the Ukraine war continues to stoke strong stagflationary winds throughout the global economy. The resulting damage -- whether in the form of higher food and energy prices or new supply-chain disruptions -- cannot be easily or rapidly countered by domestic policy adjustments. For most countries, the war's immediate economic consequences include higher inflation (which erodes purchasing power), lower growth, increased inequality and greater financial instability. The multilateral system, meanwhile, now faces greater obstacles to … [Read more...] about Beware a global economy with many little fires

In an increasingly warming world, we can’t rely on trees as a climate change cure-all

May 15, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

When people talk about ways to slow climate change, they often mention trees , and for good reason. Forests take up a large amount of the planet-warming carbon dioxide that people put into the atmosphere when they burn fossil fuels. But will trees keep up that pace as global temperatures rise? With companies increasingly investing in forests as offsets , saying it cancels out their continuing greenhouse gas emissions, that’s a multibillion-dollar question. advertisement advertisement The results of two studies published in the journals Science and Ecology Letters on May 12, 2022— one focused on growth , the other on death —raise new questions about how much the world can rely on forests to store increasing amounts of carbon in a warming future. Ecologist William Anderegg , who was involved in both studies, explains why. What does the new research tell us about trees and their ability to store carbon? The future of forests is on a … [Read more...] about In an increasingly warming world, we can’t rely on trees as a climate change cure-all
