By CAROLYN THOMPSON and MICHAEL BALSAMO BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — The 18-year-old gunman who authorities say killed 10 people at a Buffalo supermarket had previously threatened a shooting at his high school and was sent for mental health treatment, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press. Payton Gendron had appeared on the radar of police last year after he threatened to carry out a shooting at Susquehanna High School around the time of graduation, the official said. New York State Police said troopers were called to the Conklin school on June 8, 2021, for a report that a 17-year-old student had made threatening statements. Police said the student was taken into custody under a state mental health law and taken to a hospital for an evaluation. The police statement did not give the student’s name. The law enforcement official was not authorized to speak publicly on the investigation and did so on the condition of anonymity. THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Buffalo Shooting Suspect Made ‘Generalized Threat’ At School Last Year, Police Say
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline An 18-year-old man accused of killing 10 people in a racially motivated shooting Saturday in Buffalo drew police attention last year after making a threatening statement at his high school, and was given a mental health evaluation at the time, Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia said at a Sunday press conference. Key Facts Payton S. Gendron of Conklin, New York, was arrested yesterday and charged with shooting 13 people—10 fatally—at a Tops Friendly Market store, in what FBI Special Agent Steve Belongia described as a hate crime perpetrated by a racist extremist. Gendron allegedly visited Buffalo on Friday to do reconnaissance in what was apparently the first time he had visited the city, which is 168 miles from Conklin, Gramaglia said. Doubts due to fast poll results transmission? PPCRV chair says it was faster in 2019
MANILA, Philippines — The Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) dispelled doubts with the fast inflow of votes in the quick count of the 2022 national election results by reminding the public that transmission in the 2019 midterm polls was actually faster. PPCRV chairperson Myla Villanueva said in an interview with ABS-CBN News Channel’s Headstart on Monday that the big story in 2019 was the seven-hour glitch which delayed the partial quick count being done by the citizen’s arm. But this was actually even faster than the 2022 polls — data of which, she said, were opened to students and universities to ensure transparency and increase credibility who all agreed that there was nothing unusual. “To put it in perspective, maybe in 2019 the big story was the seven-hour glitch. But in reality data was coming in, we just weren’t seeing it in our servers while the other servers were seeing it. To be exact, the rate of the transmissions of 2019 were actually faster than … [Read more...] about Doubts due to fast poll results transmission? PPCRV chair says it was faster in 2019

For Lovett, who hadn't released a studio album in a decade, it was important to cover his full musical spectrum. "For somebody that hadn't heard the large band before, I wanted them to kind of know what it was about," he said when I spoke to him this week. "And then for folks that are familiar with my music, I wanted this record to feel like something that they would want to hear or would expect to hear." Lovett will be taking 12th of June tour this summer as part of a double bill … [Read more...] about Sunday Conversation: Lyle Lovett On New Music, Fatherhood, Songwriting, Cartoons And More
In an increasingly warming world, we can’t rely on trees as a climate change cure-all
When people talk about ways to slow climate change, they often mention trees , and for good reason. Forests take up a large amount of the planet-warming carbon dioxide that people put into the atmosphere when they burn fossil fuels. But will trees keep up that pace as global temperatures rise? With companies increasingly investing in forests as offsets , saying it cancels out their continuing greenhouse gas emissions, that’s a multibillion-dollar question. advertisement advertisement The results of two studies published in the journals Science and Ecology Letters on May 12, 2022— one focused on growth , the other on death —raise new questions about how much the world can rely on forests to store increasing amounts of carbon in a warming future. Ecologist William Anderegg , who was involved in both studies, explains why. What does the new research tell us about trees and their ability to store carbon? The future of forests is on a … [Read more...] about In an increasingly warming world, we can’t rely on trees as a climate change cure-all
Wondering How to Motivate Your Workforce? Take a Page from Psychological Theory
Do you trust your employees ? Psychology suggests you should. When employees are trusted, empowered and equipped to make certain decisions about how, when and where they work-- a concept known as job autonomy -- it results in positive outcomes for both the worker and employer. As technology pushes the limits of what's possible, business leaders can either stick to the status quo or take action to enable their employees to be more autonomous. Still not convinced? Let's take a deeper dive. What is autonomy and why does it matter? According to the psychological theory of self-determination , autonomy plays a major role in helping people feel motivated and fulfilled. Self-determination theory defines autonomy as feeling in control of one's decisions and behaviors. The reason autonomy is so impactful on motivation is that when people feel their choices have an effect on the output, they feel more responsible for their role and more invested in the ultimate outcome. … [Read more...] about Wondering How to Motivate Your Workforce? Govt warns cab aggregators of strict action for unfair trade practices
Representative image Cab aggregators, including Ola and Uber, have been warned of strict action unless they improve their systems and redress rising consumer complaints, a senior government official said on Tuesday. The government held a meeting on Tuesday with the ride-hailing platforms amid a rise in consumer complaints of alleged unfair trade practices by them, including ride cancellation policy, as drivers force customers to cancel trips after accepting bookings, which results in customers paying cancellation penalties. "We told them about the rising consumer complaints against their platforms. We gave them the statistics also. We have asked them to improve their system and redress the consumer complaints otherwise the competent authority will take strict action," Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh said after the meeting. Hinting at the scale of customer unhappiness against the cab aggregators, he said the complaints on the Jago Grahak Jago helpline are just … [Read more...] about Govt warns cab aggregators of strict action for unfair trade practices

Some Traits That Make You a Good Entrepreneur Also Make You Susceptible to Addiction. These Strategies Can Help
In my line of business, which involves the sale of drug testing kits, I run into many a sad story about how addiction has ruined lives and caused an immense amount of grief among people who get hooked on any number of substances, especially opioids . And while you may think I am talking about people who were born into poverty and were down on their luck and looking for an escape (and I've heard those stories, too), I'm not. I'm talking about people who have lived privileged lives, earned college degrees, started successful practices and followed their entrepreneurial dream. David J. Linden, professor of neuroscience at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, says there is some evidence that the traits that make a good entrepreneur also make one susceptible to addiction. It can also be a rather lonely road entrepreneurs walk as they get their businesses off the ground and that, coupled with a constant fear of failure hanging over their heads, may also lead to … [Read more...] about Some Traits That Make You a Good Entrepreneur Also Make You Susceptible to Addiction. Beware a global economy with many little fires
Big shocks to the global economy, such as Russia's invasion of Ukraine, understandably capture the most attention. But a new worldwide pattern of "little fires everywhere" may be equally consequential for longer-term economic well-being. Over time, these small fires can coalesce into one that is just as threatening as the initial large fire that acted as the catalyst. In addition to causing widespread death and destruction, and displacing millions of people, the Ukraine war continues to stoke strong stagflationary winds throughout the global economy. The resulting damage -- whether in the form of higher food and energy prices or new supply-chain disruptions -- cannot be easily or rapidly countered by domestic policy adjustments. For most countries, the war's immediate economic consequences include higher inflation (which erodes purchasing power), lower growth, increased inequality and greater financial instability. The multilateral system, meanwhile, now faces greater obstacles to … [Read more...] about Beware a global economy with many little fires
