Cover Story: Investment winter hits SMEs

August 11, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

This article first appeared in The Edge Malaysia Weekly, on August 1, 2022 - August 07, 2022. - A + A Small and medium enterprises have put capital expenditure on hold despite the reopening of the economy BUSINESS activities in the country have been in full swing for several months now, after two years of pandemic-induced movement restrictions. Demand has been strong since borders reopened, but the rising cost of raw materials, global economic uncertainties and, more pressingly, labour shortages have impacted the business growth of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Usually, strong orders from clients mean that business owners will start thinking about making investments to meet the demand. However, at this point in time, very few SMEs are considering capital expenditure. “Many of our members are holding back on capital investment despite the pandemic seemingly coming to a tail end. Without certainty in our ability to deliver on orders, or for … [Read more...] about Cover Story: Investment winter hits SMEs

August 11, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Gateway for merchants grows rapidly in Indonesia, eyes further expansion in Southeast Asia. W hen Tessa Wijaya decided to make a job switch in 2016 from investment banking to an Indonesian electronic payments startup, it wasn’t because the money was better, as she took an 80% pay cut. The native of a small town in West Java says she was okay with the much-reduced salary. “I thought I needed to learn about a new business,” she said. “I took a leap.” It was a highly successful leap for Wijaya and Xendit, the expanding payments gateway for which she became a cofounder and chief operating officer. On top of being a driving force for the company’s growth, the 40-year-old Wijaya is also a passionate advocate for more women in tech; she initiated Xendit’s Women in Tech Indonesia program, where entrepreneurs and tech professionals share experiences in workshops and digital forums. Unlisted Xendit doesn’t disclose its profits, but it has clearly gained the confidence of many … [Read more...] about Xendit COO Tessa Wijaya Makes Success Leap From Investment Banking To Electronic Payments

3 “Cash Loaded” Funds Almost All Investors Miss (Yields Up To 8%)

August 9, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin I’m always shocked when dividend investors ignore tech stocks. Which means I’m shocked a lot, because pretty well all income-seekers do it! That’s because most folks still think of technology as the home of profitless startups, crumbling crypto platforms or zero-dividend names like Tesla TSLA (TSLA) and Amazon AMZN .com (AMZN). But the truth is, big caps dominate the tech space, and on the whole, the sector is sitting on some of the biggest cash hoards on Wall Street. Apple AAPL (AAPL), of course, holds a legendary $202 billion. As of February, that amounted to more than 7% of the cash holdings of all S&P 500 companies! Alphabet, too, holds north of $160 billion. Microsoft MSFT ? $132 billion. The list goes on. The problem? These companies are in no hurry to hand that cash over to us dividend investors. All pay low (or no!) dividends. But there is a “backdoor” way for us to tap … [Read more...] about 3 “Cash Loaded” Funds Almost All Investors Miss (Yields Up To 8%)

Alex Jones Begs The Question, What’s More Expensive For Media: Lies, Or The Truth?

August 9, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin We are having a Goldilocks moment in American media. We simply can’t decide how much truth we really want. Too many lies can lead to expensive lawsuits, as Alex Jones proved this week with a $49M verdict for spreading misinformation about Sandy Hook. Too much truth, on the other hand, can lead to lawsuits by special interests afraid to have infamous stories made famous, as hundreds of writers have learned ( including this author). Is a healthy midpoint actually possible, or would the news simply lose all meaning? Or can we as consumers bend the news back towards the truth? Jones’ story should be a clarion call for both the right and the left to demand more truth from their storytellers. The future of democracy depends on it. Too Many Lies Last week, Alex Jones was caught lying about the Sandy Hook massacre . On December 14 th , 2012, 26 people were killed by a mass shooter , including 20 children between … [Read more...] about Alex Jones Begs The Question, What’s More Expensive For Media: Lies, Or The Truth?

Deutsche Bank poised for big win as last Lehman legal fight ends

August 11, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A (Aug 11): One of the last issues in the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers has been resolved, handing a potentially huge win to a clutch of distressed investors led by Deutsche Bank AG. The UK Supreme Court refused Lehman’s US holding company permission to appeal a ruling that said holders of subordinated notes issued by the defunct investment bank should be paid before other claims. The decision effectively brings to an end years of wrangling over what’s left to pay to creditors some 14 years after its collapse. It could lead to huge payouts for holders of little-known Enhanced Capital Advantaged Preferred Securities issued by Lehman’s UK arm prior to its collapse, which were once considered worthless. The ECAPS issue was one of the very last matters that remained open in Lehman’s long running bankruptcy, in essence deciding in what order some of the final creditors will be paid. Picking clean Lehman’s corpse has kept a legion of accountants, lawyers and … [Read more...] about Deutsche Bank poised for big win as last Lehman legal fight ends

Amazon joins deal revival spurred by lower valuation

August 11, 2022 by www.moneycontrol.com

(Image Courtesy: Reuters) There’s no relaxing on the beach this summer for corporate acquirers -- they’ve been busy snapping up technology companies, even after a stock rally over the past two months means the sector isn’t as cheap as it was back in June. Just look at Amazon.com Inc. The retail and cloud-storage giant announced a $3.49 billion deal to buy software company 1Life Healthcare Inc. last month, and last week it said it would pay $1.65 billion for iRobot Corp., maker of the Roomba vacuum. Just 10 days into August, about $13.4 billion of tech-related mergers and acquisitions have been unveiled in North America, according to Bloomberg data, which already would make it the busiest month since May. In the largest deal, buyout firm Vista Equity Partners agreed to buy tax software provider Avalara Inc. for $8.4 billion including debt. “August has historically been a quiet month for M&A, so it is surprising to see such a flurry of deals,” said Larry Feldman, a … [Read more...] about Amazon joins deal revival spurred by lower valuation
