Big Pharma Keeps Life Saving Cystic Fibrosis Drug From Poor Nations

When Seshagiri Buddana learned of a powerful new cystic fibrosis drug that was transforming lives in the United States and Europe, he was filled with hope that it could help his son, Hemanth, who had spent much of his childhood in a hospital bed. But the family couldn’t get the drug because they live in India. Big Pharma drug maker, Vertex Pharmaceuticals, a large biotech company based in Boston, is not making it available in India or virtually anywhere in the developing world. The company is not trying to sell it, or allowing a local company to make it. Vertex is blocking potential generic competitors by seeking patents in numerous countries. Hemanth died in December, a day before his ninth birthday and 18 months after he would have been eligible to get the drug, called Trikafta, had he lived in the United States. Flipkart agent killed while delivering phone in Karnataka: Report

The Flipkart agent was murdered following an altercation with a customer. (Representative image) A Flipkart agent was killed while he was out to deliver a phone in Karnataka's Arsikere, The Hindu reported. The police arrested a man on Saturday in connection with the case. Hemanth Datta, 20, has been accused of murdering Hemanth Naik, 23, during an argument while unboxing the parcel. According to the report, Hemanth Dutta had ordered a phone via Flipkart and Hemanth Naik went to deliver the parcel on February 7 but while unboxing the phone, there was an argument and Hemanth Datta allegedly stabbed Hemanth Naik to death. He then put the body in a gunny bag, poured petrol on it and set it on fire. The matter came to light after Hemanth Naik's family filed a missing complaint on February 8. His body was then discovered near the railway track at Anchekoplu in Arsikere and a case was filed. Karnataka man, who allegedly killed Flipkart agent over iPhone, kept body at home for 4 days: reports

(Representative image) A Karnataka man has been arrested for the murder of a Flipkart agent who came to deliver an iPhone that the accused had placed an order for. According to reports, the man killed the delivery agent after he was asked to pay Rs 46,000 for the phone. Hemanth Datta, 20, allegedly killed Hemanth Naik, 23, during an argument while unboxing the package. Datta was supposed to pay Rs 46,000 upon delivery of the iPhone and on February 7, when Naik came to deliver it, Datta asked him to open the box. Naik, however, refused and told him if he opens it, he will not be able to take it back and asked Datta to pay for it. The men argued and Datta allegedly stabbed Naik to death.
