New York (CNN Business) United Airlines gave a $10 million deposit to a startup developing electric aircraft — all for the goal of shuttling customers to and from the airport by air rather than gridlocked roadways. It's not clear when or if the plan will come to fruition, as Archer, the company developing the electric air taxis, is still in the development phase. However, the company said Wednesday that's it's finishing the design of its production model. Archer estimates the first of its four-seater helicopters could be in operation by 2024. California-based Archer, which was founded in 2018, has raised nearly a billion dollars, according to analytics company Crunchbase . It refers to its aircraft as an eVTOL, or "electric vertical takeoff and landing" configuration. The company states they'll be able to travel up to 60 miles at up to 150 miles per hour. The aircraft is expected to lift off much like a helicopter, and it'll rotate its propellers from providing vertical to … [Read more...] about United Airlines puts $10 million behind plan to shuttle customers by electric aircraft

In the Amazon, a UN agency has a green mission, but dirty partners
Representative image (Source: Reuters) At the edge of the Colombian Amazon, in an Indigenous village surrounded by oil rigs, the Siona people faced a dilemma. The United Nations Development Program, or UNDP, had just announced a $1.9 million regional aid package. In a village with no running water, intermittent electricity and persistent poverty, any money would mean food and opportunity. But the aid program was part of a partnership between the U.N. agency and GeoPark, the multinational petroleum company. The company holds contracts to drill near the Siona reservation, including one with the government that would expand operations onto what the Siona consider their ancestral land. To the Siona people on the Buenavista reservation, oil drilling is an assault, akin to draining blood from the earth. This collaboration is one example of how one of the world’s largest sustainable development organizations partners with polluters, even those that at times work against the … [Read more...] about In the Amazon, a UN agency has a green mission, but dirty partners

American Universities Are Losing Chinese Students To Rivals: U.S.-China Business Forum
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Growth in the number of Chinese students attending American universities has been helpful to domestic students and benefitted the U.S. economy. About a third of the more than one million international students in the U.S. are from China, and collectively, their contributions to the American economy represent around about $15 billion per year in export earnings. And though the American universities remain among the world’s best, the appeal of U.S. schools among the group is declining, according to John Quelch, dean of the University of Miami Herbert Business School and long-time business education leader in both the U.S. and China. “What we're seeing at the moment is softness in the enthusiasm of Chinese students and their parents to enroll in U.S. institutions,” Quelch said in an interview on the sidelines of the U.S.-China Business Forum held at Forbes on Fifth in New York on Tuesday. “Over the last decade, … [Read more...] about American Universities Are Losing Chinese Students To Rivals: U.S.-China Business Forum

Kim Jong Un was ‘seriously ill’ in North Korea Covid-19 surge, sister says
Kim Yo Jong said in a speech that the North Korean leader was “seriously ill” during his bout with fever, according to KCNA. - A + A (Aug 11): Kim Jong Un’s sister revealed that the North Korean leader suffered from a “high fever” during a recent Covid outbreak, as she vowed to “eradicate” South Korean authorities if they continued to tolerate propaganda leaflets the regime blames for spreading the virus. Repeating dubious claims that the pamphlets caused the recent Covid outbreak in the north, Kim Yo Jong blamed “South Korean puppets” for sending “dirty objects” across the border in leaflets carried by balloons, the official Korean Central News Agency reported Thursday. The revelation of her brother’s illness marked an unusual admission for a regime that rarely comments on the leader’s health — and then only to show that he shares the struggles of the people.
