Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin President Biden’s State of the Union Address hammered home the point that drug prices must come down. He reminded viewers that he and his Democratic colleagues are doing something about the problem, as he touted the Inflation Reduction Act’s drug pricing provisions. Moreover, the President reproached pharmaceutical companies for making record profits from insulin, adding that he seeks to expand the $35 per month cap on out-of-pocket costs to the entire population, not just Medicare beneficiaries. Furthermore, Biden said his recently enacted Inflation Reduction Act is “taking on powerful interests to bring your healthcare costs down.” Well, that may be true. But, absent from the speech was any mention of health insurers and pharmacy benefit managers. In the U.S., multiple stakeholders have created a dysfunctional healthcare system, in which an enormous cost burden is imposed on the patient. Why LendingClub’s Acquisition Of Radius Bank Is A Smart Deal
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin OBSERVATIONS FROM THE FINTECH SNARK TANK LendingClub, one of the nation’s first peer-to-peer lenders (oops! I mean, “marketplace” lenders—real ”peer to peer” lending lasted all of about a month), announced it plans to acquire Radius Bank, a relatively small Boston-based bank, unknown to most people outside of the industry (and within, for that matter). The press release announcing the pending deal contained the usual platitudes from the acquiring CEO: “This is a transformational transaction that allows us to reimagine banking in a way that is free from legacy practices and systems. We will create a category-defining experience for our members that will dramatically enhance the resilience and earnings trajectory of our business.” Despite the buzzword-laden proclamation, this acquisition makes a lot of sense for both parties for reasons that go beyond what many observers have reported on. The Short-Term … [Read more...] about Why LendingClub’s Acquisition Of Radius Bank Is A Smart Deal

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline: As the coronavirus continues to take a toll on markets and business activity, top banks on Wall Street have further revised down their forecasts for second-quarter GDP and unemployment, predicting an even greater economic hit from the coronavirus than first expected. JPMorgan was the latest big bank to cut its second-quarter GDP forecast even more, with its economists now foreseeing a 40% decline. The bank had earlier predicted a 25% hit to second-quarter GDP. The firm’s economists issued the more dire forecast following Thursday’s latest jobless claims report, which showed another 6.6 million workers filed for unemployment. Over 16 million Americans have filed for unemployment benefits in the last three weeks, the latest indicator of how badly the coronavirus is impacting the economy. Those numbers indicate a huge surge in job losses, which JPMorgan economists estimate could amount to 25 … [Read more...] about JPMorgan Forecasts 20% Unemployment And 40% Hit To Second-Quarter GDP

Choi Ji-Man talks to reporters at Incheon International Airport in Incheon on Jan. 8. [NEWS1] Choi Ji-man has been dropped from the Korean team for World Baseball Classic 2023 after his MLB team, the Pittsburg Pirates, objected to his participation on medical grounds. Choi, the most seasoned Korean batter playing in the big leagues, was named to the Korean squad for the tournament last month. With previous Korean rosters often overlooking players without any KBO experience, Choi had never been called up to represent Korea before. “I feel hungry because I have never put on a Taeguk mark before,” Choi Ji-man told reporters at Incheon International Airport on Jan. 8 before he departed to the United States for the MLB preseason. The Pirates opted to block Choi Ji-man's participating on medical grounds as he is still undergoing rehabilitation following elbow surgery last year.
