Today’s top design innovators have it all wrong. Here’s how to think bigger

May 17, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

Charles Eames was once asked to define the boundaries of design. “What are the boundaries of problems?” he replied. That was more than 50 years ago. The impact of design has only grown. As the boundaries of problems have expanded, so has design. We believe it must expand even more in the years to come. advertisement advertisement The problems facing business and, indeed, humanity are becoming even more intractable, intertwined, and complex. The global population will be nearly 10 billion by midcentury. Cities will house some 2.5 billion people by 2050, making them more crowded and clogged. Meanwhile, the global demand for everyday goods, housing, and transportation is rising—requiring material resources that we don’t have and squeezing our planet’s ecosystems. Mass migrations, booming income inequality, raging pandemics, and the impact of AI and automation add dramatically to the challenges we face. The world is screaming out for new solutions to … [Read more...] about Today’s top design innovators have it all wrong. Here’s how to think bigger

Important Pac-12 study connects frequency of concussions to controversial targeting penalty

May 10, 2022 by www.denverpost.com

The most controversial, frustrating and infuriating penalty in college football will remain in place for the foreseeable future, and the industry has the Pac-12 to thank for it — seriously. Someone had to collect the data, draw the conclusions and lend legitimacy to the one penalty — targeting — that might help save the sport. Because you know what’s worse than the targeting penalty? Concussions, chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and the long-term impact of serious brain injury. And you know what’s bad for the health of college football? The stigma of head trauma, uncaring coaches and administrators, and dwindling participation numbers, especially on the West Coast. The targeting penalty — in both college and the NFL — was designed to reduce blows to the head, thereby limiting instances of concussions and making the sport safer. Has it worked? A multi-year Pac-12 study set out to determine if targeting plays “are higher risk for concussion than other plays in … [Read more...] about Important Pac-12 study connects frequency of concussions to controversial targeting penalty

June 7, 2019 by www.fastcompany.com

The U.S. women’s national soccer team is the defending world champion heading into the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, which kicks off in France on Friday. They are expected to win, although France and Germany may have other ideas during the course of the competition, which runs from June 7 through early July. advertisement advertisement The U.S. women’s national team is a mix of new players and returning stars like Alex Morgan, Megan Rapinoe, and Julie Ertz, all determined to keep the title in the United States. In addition to fame and glory, they are probably looking forward to bringing home some of the competition’s prize money, too, as this year boasts the largest pool in Women’s World Cup history. Soccer’s governing body, FIFA, upped the prize money in the hopes of deflecting criticism about a gender pay gap between the men’s and women’s tournaments. While they doubled the payout for the winning teams—this year’s champs will take home $4 million, … [Read more...] about Here’s how much Women’s World Cup soccer players are paid compared to men

May 18, 2022 by www.denverpost.com

By The Associated Press WASHINGTON — A senior defense official says U.S. Pentagon officials are having discussions with Sweden and Finland on their security needs to deter Russia as both move toward NATO membership. The official said Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin met with Swedish Defense Minister Peter Hultqvist on Wednesday and spoke about the interim period between when the NATO application is formally made and when it is approved. There have been concerns about threats from Russia during that period, in which Sweden and Finland would not formally be covered by NATO’s Article 5 which says that an attack against one member is an attack against all and calls for collective defense. The defense official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss private Pentagon discussions. – AP writer Lolita Baldor in Washington contributed to this report. __ KEY DEVELOPMENTS IN THE RUSSIA-UKRAINE WAR: — Interrogation, uncertainty for surrendering Mariupol troops — NATO … [Read more...] about Live updates | Official: US in talks with Sweden, Finland

Obama breaches Marine umbrella protocol

May 16, 2013 by dailycaller.com

The commander in chief of the American armed forces today forced a violation of Marine Corps regulations, so he wouldn’t get wet. According to Marine Corps regulation MCO P1020.34F of the Marine Corps Uniform Regulations chapter 3, a male Marine is not allowed to carry an umbrella while in uniform. There is no provision in the Marine Corps uniform regulation guidelines that allows a male Marine to carry an umbrella. Nevertheless, during a press conference under a light drizzle with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan this morning, President Obama allowed the First Head to be protected from the elements by an umbrella held by a male Marine corporal. The relevant portion of the regulation reads, “3035. UMBRELLAS (Female Marines). Female Marines may carry an all-black, plain standard or collapsible umbrella at their option during inclement weather with the service and dress uniforms. It will be carried in the left hand so that the hand salute can be properly rendered. … [Read more...] about Obama breaches Marine umbrella protocol
