May 15, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Taiwan, home to many of the world’s largest technology companies, reported 68,732 new domestically transmitted cases of Covid-19 on Sunday, the highest daily total since the pandemic began and more than quadruple the 15,033 local cases disclosed on April 30, according to the Central News Agency. Nineteen Covid deaths were reported — all patients were in their 70s to 90s, of which eight had not been vaccinated, CNA said on Sunday. Of the 672,998 domestic cases reported in Taiwan from Jan. 1 to May 14, 1,151 involved moderate infections and 294 were severe, accounting for 0.17 percent and 0.04 percent of the total; the rest were mild or asymptomatic, the news agency said. Against that backdrop, the Taiwan External Trade Development Council on Wednesday reconfirmed earlier announced plans for its big annual international technology trade show Computex to open for in-person participation May 24-27 in Taipei after two years of … [Read more...] about Taiwan Covid Cases Hit A Daily Record 68,732; Computex Tech Fair Affirms In-Person Return

Dissection by TikTok: Johnny Depp, Amber Heard trial posts are making accidental influencers out of some, targets out of others

May 15, 2022 by edition.cnn.com

(CNN) TikTok posts about actor Johnny Depp's defamation trial against his ex-wife, actress Amber Heard, have turned a stay-at-home mom based in Scotland into an accidental influencer. Or, perhaps more aptly, a DeppTok influencer. Sophie Doggett, whose TikTok was previously populated by videos on everyday things such as herself or her pets, posted to her TikTok account on April 25 a clip of Heard's lawyer asking a question of a witness and then immediately objecting to the response. It is one of many moments in the trial that has been seized upon by people like Doggett, as clips of testimony and references to the case have pervaded TikTok in a way that no trial has before. That's partly because the proceeding, set to resume Monday, is being livestreamed during the age of TikTok, and also because of the high-profile celebrities the case involves. Doggett, who paired the clip to playful music, said she gained 30,000 followers seemingly overnight from the post which has, to date, … [Read more...] about Dissection by TikTok: Johnny Depp, Amber Heard trial posts are making accidental influencers out of some, targets out of others

Fintech For All

May 12, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin You could imagine that tech should and could provide solutions for people with disabilities. Well, of course, that can only happen if people with disabilities are part of designing the process from the outset. I wonder if their lack of involvement is the reason for the failure of many Fintech solutions? Since being launched and playing a part in the mainstream, financial technology has been met with criticism. These complaints have been due to inaccessibility and discrimination. According to an article by Entrepreneur , there are 1.7 billion unbanked people worldwide and households with disabilities are more likely to be unbanked as those with no disabilities. To break this down means they have no spending records, resulting in reduced access to financial assistance and loans. For some, it is easier to access or visit a bank, but this can be a daunting task for people with disability hence why Fintech is such an essential … [Read more...] about Fintech For All

How does Murugappa Group keep everyone in the family happy?

March 3, 2022 by www.moneycontrol.com

By and large, the seniors in the family, if sources are to go by, have ensured that they have minimal differences among themselves. (Photo by Joey Kyber from Pexels) The Hindu, TVS and Murugappa are iconic names in Chennai. They have something in common. Each one of them has four wings (rather families) within. In a larger family business conglomerate such as these, frictions aren't uncommon. But how do they stay together despite that? In the case of the TVS, the four families had for long an informal arrangement. Each one managed the companies they were running independently though there were cross-holdings between the companies managed by each family. Recently, they got together to legalise their informal divisions. Accordingly, cross-holdings were removed and each family has been allowed to manage the companies they are running hitherto independently. That was a smooth transition. MacKenzie Scott, Michael Bloomberg Among The Biggest Billionaire Donors To Abortion-Rights Groups “T hough the nation’s wealthiest philanthropists have been giving to reproductive rights groups for decades, the cause constitutes a relatively small portion of overall philanthropic giving,” reports Rachel Sandler: According to the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy, $1.7 billion went to reproductive rights nonprofits from 2015 to 2019. That’s 2.2% of the $76 billion from foundations during that time period. Even less money, $361 million, was earmarked specifically for abortion rights and services, as opposed to other forms of reproductive healthcare. 73 of India’s 100 unicorns have at least one founder from IIT

May 13, 2022 by www.moneycontrol.com

In his book, The Golden Tap, serial entrepreneur Kashyap Deorah had described how Lee Fixel, a former partner with Tiger Global, used to filter potential startups on the basis of the founders' caste and JEE (advanced) ranks. Only candidates with high JEE (joint entrance examination) ranks make it to India’s premier technical institutes -- the central-government owned Indian Institutes of Technology, commonly known as IITs. “Fixel preferred North Indian Marwari banias with single or double-digit JEE ranks who were young and first-time entrepreneurs. An analysis had probably revealed that such entrepreneurs were the best performers in the companies Tiger liked funding,” Deorah had written. Fixel had led negotiations for funding rounds for Tiger Global in unicorns like Flipkart and Ola, which were among the New York-based hedge fund’s largest bets in India. Both the companies best fit Deorah’s description as Sachin and Binny Bansal, founders of Flipkart, come from IIT Delhi, … [Read more...] about 73 of India’s 100 unicorns have at least one founder from IIT

Is The Future Of Supercars Electric?

April 23, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Supercars, and their even more extreme hypercar successors, are the pinnacle of what internal combustion can deliver. Vehicles like the Bugatti Veyron and Chiron, as well as competitors from Swedish Koenigsegg and American SSC, have traded blows over the last couple of decades as the fastest production cars in the world. But they are being eclipsed by a new genre of supercars: electric ones. The Lamborghini Miura is often cited as the first supercar, and it still stands up today as one of the most beautiful vehicles ever made. Perhaps the Jaguar XK120 from 1949 or the Mercedes 300SL Gullwing of 1955 deserve to be considered the first supercars instead. Either way, these are exotic vehicles, intended to combine design excellence with extreme performance. Successors in this genre include the Lamborghini Countach, Porsche 959, Ferrari F40 and McLaren F1. All held the position of “fastest production car in the world”, until the … [Read more...] about Is The Future Of Supercars Electric?
