A drone came within 20 metres (65ft) of hitting a jumbo jet as it flew into Heathrow Airport, it has been revealed. Details of 18 near misses between the devices and aircraft in Britain's skies have emerged following major disruption at Heathrow and Gatwick in recent weeks. In one incident on 22 July, the pilot of an Airbus A380 spotted a "large commercial drone" pass along the right side of the aircraft at 3,400ft (1,036m).The device - which came "within approximately 20m" of the plane - was being flown in a way which was "endangering other aircraft" and involved the highest risk of collision, the UK Airprox Board (UKAB) said.Another serious near miss involved an Embraer 190 airliner as it came into land at Glasgow Airport on 7 September.A "shiny white drone" was flown immediately above the plane at just 15-30m (50-100ft) away. The UKAB concluded that a "definite risk of collision had existed".Meanwhile, a Boeing 737 nearly collided with a drone at 4,000ft (1,200m) as it prepared to to … [Read more...] about Drone ‘within 20m’ of jumbo jet flying into Heathrow as near misses are revealed

Fly-rod pike turn Canada’s wilderness fishing even more glorious
The Detroit News Published 12:04 p.m. UTC Jul 14, 2018 Lynn Lake, Manitoba — Somewhere on that cedar-thick esker was a bull moose the guys had seen scampering skyward through trees and moss and away from a 16-foot aluminum boat that had invaded Pyta Lake on a Friday morning in late June. But that was minutes ago and the moose had now given way to fishing northern Manitoba wilderness water: charcoal-colored, deep in places, but otherwise rimmed with shallow bays and cuts filled with light-green wild rice, deeper-green lily pads — and northern pike waiting to chomp on a white Clouser Minnow fly flashed with red tinsel. This was going to be the main act on a 2019 trip. Rather than wear out spinning reels and every Dardevle and Mepps spinner a guy could throw into Canada’s cold depths, the plan this year was to get serious about using a fly-rod combination rather than simply dabble with one as had been done in earlier years — for trout on the Au Sable and … [Read more...] about Fly-rod pike turn Canada’s wilderness fishing even more glorious
