With a population hovering around 75,000, South Carolina’s most charming town is where big city cool meets small-town America. Mary Earps Becomes First English Goalkeeper Shortlisted For The Best FIFA Awards
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Manchester United's Mary Earps has today been announced as among the top three goalkeepers in the world after making the final shortlist for The Best FIFA Awards. She is the first-ever English goalkeeper, either male or female, to achieve this feat. Earps, England's ever-present goalkeeper during their victory at the UEFA Women's Euro last summer, has been shortlisted alongside Lyon's Champions League winning goalkeeper, Christiane Endler of Chile, and Chelsea's Ann-Katrin Berger. The three other players initially nominated last month were VfL Wolfsburg's Merle Frohms, Chicago Red Stars' Alyssa Naeher and Barcelona's Sandra Paños. In 2020, Earps' current international understudy, Ellie Roebuck of Manchester City was on the six-player longlist for The Best FIFA Women's Goalkeeper Award but ultimately failed to make the top three, finishing sixth with just five ranking points, nineteen behind winner Sarah Bouhaddi. … [Read more...] about Mary Earps Becomes First English Goalkeeper Shortlisted For The Best FIFA Awards

The ‘Hogwarts Legacy’ J.K. Rowling Boycotts Were A Mistake
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Hogwarts Legacy has been mired in controversy since the day it was announced, largely thanks to the rancor surrounding Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling and her feud with the trans-rights activists. Rowling has alienated large swaths of her fanbase and, in some ways, fanned the flames of an already red-hot debate. As I’ve noted in the past, I think this is all quite bizarre and the Harry Potter fan in me wishes that Rowling had stayed out of the fray. She could have funded whatever political causes she wanted without popping off on Twitter, if only because someone in her position should stand as a role model and hero for all her fans—not just some of them. I also think the reaction to Rowling’s opinions has often been over-the-top and counterproductive and never has this been more true than the rigid, strident and often unreasonable position many have taken on Hogwarts Legacy. It’s fine to vote with your wallet, but … [Read more...] about The ‘Hogwarts Legacy’ J.K. Rowling Boycotts Were A Mistake
Empowering Shareholders Will Help Reduce Proxy Advisory Firm’s Undue Influence
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Titans of Wall Street have become vocal advocates for environmental, social, and governance (ESG) investing – including leaders of the world’s largest asset managers, banks, and other financial institutions. Less well known proponents, but perhaps even more influential, are the proxy advisory firms ISS and Glass Lewis, who control 97 percent of the proxy advisory market. Proxy advisory firms advise institutional investors (like Vanguard, BlackRock, and State Street) and dozens of state retirement systems on how to vote on the thousands of shareholder resolutions which arise every year. Despite all this enthusiasm, there are reasons for skepticism. As I have documented here , here , here , and here , ESG investing is far from the panacea its proponents claim. What is true for investing also applies to the many ESG proxy questions raised at companies’ annual meetings. Institutional investors are required (or … [Read more...] about Empowering Shareholders Will Help Reduce Proxy Advisory Firm’s Undue Influence
Creativity Takes Courage: Counseling Outside The Box
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin For as long as I can remember, art has been an essential part of my life. Even at my kindergarten graduation, I announced on stage that “when I grow up, I am going to be an artist.” Sketching, painting, crafting, and music have always been my favorite ways to self-soothe as a teenager filled with angst to an adult weathering a pandemic world. While growing up, I found that along with art I had a passion for helping others. I remember at 19 years old struggling to decide on a new career path after my plan of becoming a fashion designer didn’t quite fit. My mom and I were riding in the car, and she said, “You have always been a helper, have you thought about being a counselor?” Well, like they say… Mothers know best. My brain was buzzing with ideas on how I could combine my two passions: art and helping. I understood art’s healing powers and wanted to use it to help others. After graduating with my bachelor’s degree in … [Read more...] about Creativity Takes Courage: Counseling Outside The Box

How To Scale And Maintain An ‘Enviable Culture’ As Your Employee Count Doubles
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin “As we grew rapidly and turned people over, we proactively tried to protect against a disintegrating culture. Our solution was to create an exceptional workplace culture in a democratic way, using employees to shape what their experience looked like.” —Susan Page, Head of Employee Engagement and Organizational Effectiveness at a small biotech company How do you scale and maintain great culture while your employee count more than doubles? Susan Page served as the Head of Employee Experience and Organizational Effectiveness for two years at a small, rapid-growth biotechnology company that was acquired earlier this year. Page arrived at an inflection point: There were a ton of loyal, engaged employees and at the same time, tons of new hires and new locations were being added. And all of this transpired at the height of the pandemic. Over her two years, the company grew from 210 employees to 450. Proactively, the … [Read more...] about How To Scale And Maintain An ‘Enviable Culture’ As Your Employee Count Doubles
