‘Sustainable’ Electric Cars Are Getting Junked Over Minor Damage
Insurers are being forced to write off many electric vehicles with only minor damage to battery packs, sending the batteries to scrap yards and hindering the climate benefits of going electric, Reuters reported. Battery packs typically represent roughly half the cost of an electric vehicle, sometimes costing tens of thousands of dollars, often making it more economical for insurers to consider a car as totalled than replace a battery pack, according to Reuters. While many carmakers, including Ford and GM, told Reuters that their battery packs were repairable, many are unwilling to share key data with third-party insurers to help assess damage. (RELATED: Biden’s Energy Secretary Calls Going Green ‘The Greatest Peace Plan’ In History) “The number of cases is going to increase, so the handling of batteries is a crucial point,” Christoph Lauterwasser, managing director of the research institute Allianz Center for Technology, told Reuters. “If you throw away the vehicle at an … [Read more...] about ‘Sustainable’ Electric Cars Are Getting Junked Over Minor Damage
Why We Don’t Play The Long Game
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Evan Coopersmith, EVP of Data Science at AE.Studio . Good habits have upfront costs and long-term benefits. Bad habits have upfront benefits and long-term costs. A cigarette offers a short-term benefit in terms of the stimulation from the nicotine, the social camaraderie of the step outside the office to relax with a colleague and the physical enjoyment orally and otherwise. The long-term costs are well-understood (increased risk of cancer and death certainly appear at the top of the list). Trips to the gym, especially those first few, can involve significant short-term suffering with respect to physical soreness, fatigue and, if you’re socially conscious, the sense of being dramatically weaker than the human beings around you. Decisions The examples above are painfully obvious in terms of their short-term/long-term costs/benefits. There are countless other examples with respect to physical, mental and … [Read more...] about Why We Don’t Play The Long Game
Considerations For New Starbucks CEO Laxman Narasimhan To Improve The Company
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Starbucks announced today the permanent appointment of Laxman Narasimhan to the role of CEO, taking over from Howard Schultz. The move was expected— Narasimhan began working at the coffee giant in October 2022—but now it's a chance for the new CEO to contemplate changes to the organization's leadership and corporate culture, including its related operations. Of course, with Schultz now out of the seat, it's Narasimhan's full-brew opportunity. We could even argue that Starbucks is at an inflection point in its long history. As the company faces the challenges of a fast-changing market landscape, let alone prolonged economic instability and recession-like signs, Narasimhan must lead with agility and vision from the start. What leadership and organizational culture changes might Narasimhan prioritize to ensure Starbucks' continued success and sustainable growth? Innovation, purpose, and employee engagement are three … [Read more...] about Considerations For New Starbucks CEO Laxman Narasimhan To Improve The Company
McGill’s PIVOT Project Strives To Turn Climate Anxiety Into Action For SMEs
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Dror Etzion , an associate professor of Strategy and Organization at McGill, has contributed to this story. There’s perhaps no greater buzzkill than climate change. If your friends have outstayed their welcome at your house, and you want them to leave, just mention weird weather, carbon pricing, or the ecological impact of flying and everyone will start heading for the exits. Believe me, I’ve been there. But there’s also the underlying anxiety about climate change that cannot be shaken. Avoiding the issue only leads to further anxiety, particularly for younger generations, who will have to face the consequences of inaction. As with any anxiety, the key to addressing climate anxiety is to stop dwelling and start doing. This is true not only in our personal lives, but also in business—particularly small and medium-sized—where founders and leaders can act as change-makers and drive impactful action. The … [Read more...] about McGill’s PIVOT Project Strives To Turn Climate Anxiety Into Action For SMEs
The Aviation Industry Is Investing In Sustainable Fuel, But More Is Needed
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The U.S. airline industry has set an ambitious goal to be net carbon neutral by 2050. To some this may seem like a long way off, but consider this is an industry worldwide that was built on using fossil fuels. Given the long lead time and risk to develop new aircraft, 2050 seems like it’s right around the corner. The two most popular commercial planes in the world, the Boeing 737 family and the Airbus A320 family, first took to the skies 56 and 36 years ago, respectively. The newer models are of course more efficient than these first models, but the underlying engineering for both planes is decades old. Sustainable aircraft fuel, or SAF, is one encouraging development for a more sustainable airline future. SAF uses fossil fuel by-products or plant based sources to create fuel for existing aircraft engines. With enough SAF, world airlines could become almost immediately net carbon neutral because their energy needs would no … [Read more...] about The Aviation Industry Is Investing In Sustainable Fuel, But More Is Needed
Chateau Ste. Michelle And Live Nation Team Up To Reach Younger Wine Drinkers
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Chateau Ste. Michelle aims to reach younger consumers with its new sponsorship with Live Nation. Washington state’s founding wine business kicked off the largest wine category sponsorship in live music Thursday with its partnership with Live Nation. It is the first-ever national wine sponsorship for Live Nation. “It’s not a secret that the wine category has not been as effective at recruiting younger consumers of legal drinking age,” says Toby Whitmoyer, president of the Washington business unit of Ste. Michelle Wine Estates. “Other beverage categories have done a better job at it. You have to know your consumers, what they want and provide it to them in new ways. Live music is a passion point.” Russell Wallach, global president of media and sponsorship for Live Nation, says that they had previously worked with Whitmoyer. “Toby has a unique understanding of the power of live music,” he says. “It was incredible timing, … [Read more...] about Chateau Ste. ‘Climate time bomb ticking’, emissions must urgently be cut – UN chief
A firefighter hoses down flames from the Mosquito Fire as it burns in Foresthill in Placer County, California, US, September 7, 2022. REUTERS/Fred Greaves UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres warned that the “climate time bomb is ticking” as he urged rich nations on Monday to slash emissions sooner after a new assessment from scientists said there was little time to lose in tackling climate change. “The rate of temperature rise in the last half century is the highest in 2,000 years,” he said. “Concentrations of carbon dioxide are at their highest in at least 2 million years. The climate time-bomb is ticking.” In a recorded address, Guterres described the sixth “synthesis report” from the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) as “a survival guide for humanity” and urged developed countries to commit to reaching net zero emissions by the earlier date of around 2040. The synthesis report summarised findings from three expert assessments published between 2021 and … [Read more...] about ‘Climate time bomb ticking’, emissions must urgently be cut – UN chief
