‘Utter Incompetence’: European Officials Accuse US Of Ripping Up Banking Rules With SVB Bailout
European officials are enraged at the U.S. for its decision to bail out Silicon Valley Bank, according to the Financial Times. European financial regulators have ripped their American counterparts’ decision to bail out Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) in the wake of its collapse, claiming they violated their own standards in doing so, according to the Financial Times. They are particularly frustrated at the decision to cover all deposits when they were only supposed to guarantee up to $250,000. A senior eurozone official expressed their shock at the “total and utter incompetence” of U.S. authorities and called them out for previously advocating to end bailouts during “long and boring meetings,” according to the Financial Times. “From a financial stability perspective, they really killed a fly with a sledgehammer,” said Nicolas Véron, a regulation expert at the Washington think-tank the Peterson Institute, according to the Financial Times. Mackey , who had over 58,000 followers on his account using the name “Ricky Vaughn” prior to the 2016 election, posted an image on Twitter advertising the ability to vote for Hillary Clinton by text, prompting at least 4,900 individuals to do so, according to the Department of Justice (DOJ) news release . He was charged in January 2021 under a “conspiracy against rights” law that makes it an offense “to injure, oppress, threaten, or intimidate any person … in the free exercise or enjoyment of any right or privilege secured to him by the Constitution.” Aaron Terr, director of Public Advocacy for the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE), a legal organization that defends free speech, told the Daily … [Read more...] about Legal Experts Are Sounding The Alarm Over A Court Case That Could Empower The Gov’t To Police ‘Disinformation’

Senate Overcomes Major Hurdle In Repealing The President’s War Authorizations In Iraq
The Senate completed a procedural vote in favor of repealing a pair of authorizations that allowed the President to take military action against Iraq in 1991 and 2003, paving a smooth path for the total revocation of the president’s war powers in Iraq. Overturning the 1991 Persian Gulf War authorization and the 2002 Iraq War authorizations passed the 60-vote threshold required to overcome the filibuster on Thursday. The bipartisan legislation needs to clear the amendment process at a vote next week, but the bill’s coauthors, Republican Sen. Todd Young of Indiana and Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia, expect the legislation to pass, according to Politico. Efforts to repeal the 2002 and 1991 Authorizations for Use of Military Force (AUMFs) have gathered steam since Kaine and Young first introduced the legislation in 2019. “The Iraq War has itself been long over. This AUMF outlived its purpose and we can no longer justify keeping it in effect,” Senate Majority Leader … [Read more...] about Senate Overcomes Major Hurdle In Repealing The President’s War Authorizations In Iraq

DOJ Internal Watchdog Shuts Down House Democrats’ Claims Against FBI Whistleblower Steve Friend
The Department of Justice Office of the Inspector General (DOJ-OIG) has contradicted House Democrats’ claim about whistleblower and former FBI Special Agent Steve Friend, a group representing Friend announced in a March 15 press release. House Judiciary Democrats released a 316-page report early March challenging the credibility of whistleblowers who sat for transcribed interviews with the House Judiciary Committee, alleging, among other things, that both the DOJ-OIG and Office of Special Counsel had rejected Friend’s claim. In a March 13 letter sent to Empower Oversight, a nonprofit that helps whistleblowers document and report corruption, DOJ Assistant Inspector General Sean O’Neill corrected the record, assuring the group that Friend’s claims “remain under assessment.” As part of an investigation into alleged political bias in the FBI and DOJ, the House Judiciary Committee, headed by Republican Ohio Rep.
