Instead, a political veteran told me, the voters will reduce your candidate and his entire campaign down to one idea or concept. “You get one sentence, kid. Make it count.” And so for Bernie Sanders, that one sentence is, “Socialist guy.” For Beto O’Rourke, it’s, “Kind of like a Kennedy, but weird.” For Pete Buttigieg, it’s the “Really smart, young … wait — he’s gay?” guy. Liz Warren? “Fake Indian.” On Tuesday I got to see former Vice President Joe Biden at a house party in Nashua, N.H. He gave a speech, he worked the crowd, he engaged in an inordinate amount … [Read more...] about ‘Grandpa Joe’ not the best look for Biden

“Camping in the Lake District, in February?” “It’s freezing! You must be mad,” said plenty of people. “Aha!” said I, “but it’s not exactly camping. We’re staying in a Hobbit Hole.”“A Hobbit Hole?” Yes. These grass covered, insulated, wood panneled spaces exist at The Quiet Site near Ullswater, “one of the coolest places to stay” according to The Times. Getting away from it all is becoming increasingly essential in this overworked, overstretched, breakneck speed existence so many of us now call life.So it’s just as well that for those prepared to pack their camping gear (minus the tent) in the middle of winter, and head up into the mountains, some kind of heaven awaits.Family camping in the Lake District is becoming an all year round affair, even in freezing temperatures.Although you can’t really call four walls, under floor heating, a toilet and washbasin, a lockable front door and … [Read more...] about REVIEW: A stay in a Hobbit Hole at The Quiet Site, Ullswater, The Lake District
The 500 block of South 46th Street in West Philly is another pleasant block above the hobbit hole. Homeowners and renters try to get along, kids play on the sidewalk, people tend to their lawns, and in the summertime they sit on their porches. For years they’ve sat above this portal. Actually, it’s been about four years. It was then that the first hobbit door — a small, circular green hatch perched against rocks and hidden in shrubs — popped up to house the neighborhood's tinier, magical population. It's something of a small sensation. If you live there, you probably know about the hobbit holes, maybe you've even snapped a photo before. And maybe you've heard the story about the hobbit-door creator herself. Viviane McCreary is known as an avid gardener on her tight-knit block. Neighbors say she's always outside, on her knees weeding or laying a fresh bed of mulch. One day four years ago she suggested to her neighbor across the street, Peter Stathis, … [Read more...] about West Philly’s hobbit-door creator fell ill — and then her neighbors stepped in to help

News stations across the state, magazines like the Smithsonian, lifestyle websites and niche design companies have flocked to the fairytale-like image of a peculiar 1970s earthbound house that has recently gone up for sale. “People are always thinking of a mythical creature that might live here,” Edina Realty realtor Dale Antiel said during a recent tour of the home. It shares an inclined driveway with another residential property and hides at the top of a tree-covered hillside. Winding inset wooden stairs lure visitors up to the front door, tucked beneath a curved steel frame, built just inches from a large tree. Its entrance can be likened to an eye of the earth, half-open to nature. Where does this house lie? Is it located somewhere exotic? A past movie set similar to The Lord of the Rings? A secretive middle-of-nowhere countryside? “Google ‘hobbit house Wisconsin’ and see what comes up,” Antiel softly chuckled. Surprisingly enough, this enigmatic … [Read more...] about Take a look inside Hobbit-like house for sale in River Falls, Wis.
