Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Second homes are the stuff of fantasy. Not a necessity, like primary residences, they are often expressions of the ways homeowners love to spend leisure time, whether at a pied-a-terre close to the theater, opera, museums and other urban attractions, a house along an isolated stretch of beach, an island getaway, a luxurious apartment on a golf course or a multi-generational gathering place near the ski lifts. Whichever vacation home a family chooses tells a lot about what they cherish in their spare time. Since we have been isolated and confined by a troublesome new pandemic, an undeniable trend has risen to the top of real estate wish lists: we crave nature. If we live in cities, we try to find places where we can walk, breathe fresh air, keep a garden and maybe even observe wildlife. If we can, we buy a second home that offers all of these, with space to gather during school vacations. Most desirable are second homes … [Read more...] about The Most Hotly Desired Element In Luxury Second Homes

Genesis Launch North American Tour With Triumphant Opening Night In Chicago
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin “Say we’ll be together ‘til the end,” sang Phil Collins Monday night in Chicago as English prog rockers Genesis launched their North American tour on stage at United Center. Amidst an arena concert landscape dominated by reunion tours - in a year where acts like the Rolling Stones are staging highly entertaining concerts even as each member approaches the age of 80 - most tours lack a tangible sense of finality. Another go at it almost always seems plausible. But this Genesis outing feels different, with even the tour’s title - “The Last Domino?” - seemingly hinting at the inevitable. Plagued by a litany of health issues, singer Phil Collins, 70, now sits for the majority of the group’s two hour plus performances, unable to play the drums as he did when Genesis last performed together in 2007. Nevertheless, Monday night in Chicago, the first of two sold out shows at United Center, found Collins in fine … [Read more...] about Genesis Launch North American Tour With Triumphant Opening Night In Chicago

Russia slips into historic default as sanctions muddy next steps
- A + A (June 27): Russia defaulted on its external sovereign bonds for the first time in a century, the culmination of ever-tougher Western sanctions that shut down payment routes to overseas creditors. For months, Russia had found paths around the penalties imposed after the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine. But at the end of the day on Sunday, the grace period on about US$100 million of trapped interest payments due May 27 expired, a deadline considered an “Event of Default” if missed. The route to this point has been far from normal, as Russia has the resources to pay its bills — and tried to do so — but was blocked by the sanctions. Those restrictions also mean there’s huge uncertainty about what comes next, and about how investors can go about getting their money. “With Russia benefiting from the high price of its energy exports, it clearly has both the means and the desire to pay its foreign debt,” said Giles Coghlan, chief analyst at HYCM Group. It’s a … [Read more...] about Russia slips into historic default as sanctions muddy next steps
HK’s handover generation is caught in China’s whirlwind
HONG KONG (Bloomberg): How does Hong Kong look to people born in the year of the handover - for whom the city has always been under Chinese sovereignty? Some feel their fate is tied to Hong Kong’s, while others feel like bystanders as Beijing tightens its grip. Many plan to leave sooner or later. We spoke to six 24- and 25-year-olds about the Hong Kong they grew up in, and the one they expect to exist in another 25 years. The returning professional "I feel helpless witnessing the changes that Hong Kong has been through,” said Keanne Lee. "At the same time, I want to keep a glimpse of hope alive that the city won’t lose its uniqueness.” Lee studied at a Hong Kong school where lessons are taught in English, then went to university in the UK. She returned to her home city after graduation, where she’s now a marketing executive for an e-commerce company. She has no plans to move abroad permanently in the near future. The growing pressure on school pupils to learn Mandarin is … [Read more...] about HK’s handover generation is caught in China’s whirlwind
LongTail Rally 2.0: More Cars, More Adventures, More Chills And Thrills
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Just over 13 months after the inaugural LongTail Rally of 2021, rally organizers kicked off the second LongTail Rally amidst the stunning skyline of San Francisco. Gathering at the Fairmont Hotel on Mason Street for the opening dinner, and culminating at the Hyatt Regency, Gainey Ranch in Scottsdale, Arizona one week later, this year’s rally involved more participants, covered more miles and included even more adventures. Rally organizers Michael Knapp and Julie Milne didn’t need to up their game after the celebrated reaction to the first LongTail Rally, but they kicked things up a notch nonetheless. Where last year’s rally included a trip to BMW’s driving school in Thermal, California, and a visit to Speed Vegas outside Sin City, this year’s drive crossed far more state lines and included off-road safaris, high-altitude tests of man and machine, plus a massive 110-degree pool party and a marriage proposal. Wall Street sheds opening gains on losses in high-growth stocks
- A + A NEW YORK/BENGALURU (June 27): Wall Street's main indexes fell after opening higher on Monday, as a rally last week on easing concerns over inflation lost steam, with high-growth stocks leading declines. "We had a nice rally last week, so I think we're seeing a little bit of profit taking this morning," said Dennis Dick, a proprietary trader at Bright Trading LLC in Las Vegas. "The stocks that were up the most last week are the ones getting hit the hardest here today." The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite index, which gained 7.5% last week, fell 0.7% to lead declines among the three major indexes. Investors were betting on the retreat in oil prices from the three-month highs hit in June to potentially ease inflationary pressures and likely push the Federal Reserve to moderate its aggressive policy tightening. However, data on Monday showed new orders for US-made capital goods and shipments increased solidly in May, pointing to sustained strength in business … [Read more...] about Wall Street sheds opening gains on losses in high-growth stocks
President Ford’s Vail Winter White House Hits The Market For $13 Million
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin While he was President, Gerald Ford was often mocked for alleged physical ineptitude. He acquired a reputation as a clumsy, likable and simple-minded everyman; an incident in 1975, when he tripped while exiting Air Force One in Austria, was famously and repeatedly parodied by Chevy Chase on Saturday Night Live , cementing Ford's image as a klutz. In fact, he was a lifelong athlete, a skilled football player who won two national championships while at the University of Michigan. Following his senior year, he turned down offers from the Detroit Lions and the Green Bay Packers, instead taking a position as the boxing coach and assistant varsity football coach at Yale, while applying to Yale Law School. He loved to ski, so a vacation home in Vail, Colorado made sense. Built in 1967, this mountain chateau served as a favorite holiday retreat for President Gerald and First Lady Betty Ford. Now their winter holiday ski house … [Read more...] about President Ford’s Vail Winter White House Hits The Market For $13 Million
Chart patterns hint at more downsides, wait for panic bottom at 14,000 on Nifty, says Mazhar Mohammad of Chartviewindia
The downtrend in the market is far from over, if technical evidences are considered, and the broader index may decline to a level anywhere between 13,950 and 13,500, says Mazhar Mohammad, Founder and Chief Market Strategist at Chartviewindia. "We are not buyers at these levels but wait for a panic bottom to form around 14,000 levels which should be a good opportunity," he says during an interview with Moneycontrol . But, investors can focus on themes like electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem from Auto space, high beta large-cap private banks space and can start accumulating some of the midcap IT counters which corrected by 40 - 50 percent, he says. Excerpts from the interview: Do you think the Nifty50 has bottomed out after hitting a fresh 52-week low so far as chart patterns and sentiment indicators show? In recent times, more often than not, investors have seen markets staging bigger rallies after slightly bigger corrections or a market crash kind of situation.
