2023 World Baseball Classic Was A Triumph As Improvements Begin With Timing
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The 2023 World Baseball Classic was a resounding success as evident in attendance, viewership, and merchandise sales. It also didn’t hurt to have the United States and Japan battle to the bitter end in an epic championship ball game. No one will ever forget how Shohei Ohtani struck out Mike Trout with two outs in the top of the ninth inning to solidify Japan’s 3-2 victory and the country’s third World Baseball Classic championship and first since 2009. Regardless of the highly competitive ball games and ebullient crowds in Miami, Phoenix, Taichung, and Tokyo, critics still found fault with the timing of the two week tournament, its overall relevance, and injuries to perennial all-stars. Credence can be given to arguments regarding why the World Baseball Classic occurs in March during the middle of spring training. However, it can no longer be viewed as a meaningless tournament as evident in the effusive praise and … [Read more...] about 2023 World Baseball Classic Was A Triumph As Improvements Begin With Timing
The real reason more women and people of color suffer from imposter syndrome
When you’re growing up, you progressively get more confident in your ability to do difficult things: read a harder book, play a tougher sport, or join the conversation at the grown-ups’ table. But anyone who’s been a teenager knows that learning and confidence curves are not linear—nor do they always run in parallel. In fact, for many people, the more you progress, the more you start to question your achievements. “Is it really because I’m talented? Or is it just luck, over-preparation, or even privilege?” somebody . I didn’t necessarily question whether I belonged, but I definitely felt intimidated by the atmosphere and the accomplishments of all of my classmates. It felt like everyone was always one step ahead of me, which led to a lot of self-questioning at night while living away from home at the age of 15. When I went to Yale, I encountered a variation on this theme. I always had this thought that people perceived me as a basketball player first and a student … [Read more...] about The real reason more women and people of color suffer from imposter syndrome
Who’s still buying real estate in the metaverse?
Higher mortgage rates have quashed the housing boom of the past few years—and on Tuesday, the National Association of Realtors said that in February, home prices were lower in a year-over-year comparison for the first time in almost 11 years. That’s the real world. Over in the metaverse, though, real estate is undergoing a different sort of struggle, as it’s tied so closely to the price of Ethereum. Average sales prices for parcels of virtual land have dropped from more than $11,000 to less than $2,000, according to WeMeta . But not all the news is bad. The market for virtual homes is currently valued at $1.4 billion , according to a separate report from Parcel, a marketplace for Web3 gaming. To put that in perspective, in 2021, virtual real estate sales measured at just $500 million, meaning last year saw 180% year-over-year growth. More than 62,000 unique digital wallets hold land, with some of those likely holding multiple properties. There is, of … [Read more...] about Who’s still buying real estate in the metaverse?
Does First Electric Ford Explorer Have What It Takes For European Domination?
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The Ford Explorer is a legendary vehicle, although not to be confused with the giant Ford Expedition driven by Jack Bauer in the TV series “24”. The most recent internal combustion Explorer is about a foot shorter, albeit still a large SUV in the American style. Now there is a European car carrying the Explorer badge – but this time it’s all electric. The new electric Ford Explorer was launched in Central London , although it’s not due to arrive with customers until 2024. The electric Ford Explorer that was launched in London is much smaller than the American car it shares a name with – over two feet (60cm) shorter, 5in (13cm) narrower, and 7in (18cm) less tall. In truth, it’s a completely different car, and there will be no fossil fuel variant, not even a hybrid. This is a pure-electric vehicle and is intended primarily for Europe. It will be built in Ford’s factory in Cologne, Germany. Although Ford was coy about this at … [Read more...] about Does First Electric Ford Explorer Have What It Takes For European Domination?
Another Benefit Of Hybrid Work: A Shift From Hustle Culture To Outcome Culture
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin There’s nothing wrong with hustle. It drives entrepreneurs to keep building, innovators to keep improving, and support people to keep striving to deliver excellent experiences to their customers. But the “hustle culture” that has pervaded workplaces has been nothing but stressful, onerous and soul-crushing. That’s part of the reason support for hybrid and remote work models continues to hold strong in key quarters of the economy. In financial services, there have been well-publicized return-to-office mandates, but these are the exception, rather than the rule. A recent survey of 4,000 financial services firms by Scoop finds that 80% now have hybrid work arrangements in place. The degree of flexibility is split: 39% report they are fully flexible— giving employees compete control over their schedule and location, while 41% have “structured” hybrid workplaces — typified as requiring two to three days in the on-site office. … [Read more...] about Another Benefit Of Hybrid Work: A Shift From Hustle Culture To Outcome Culture

T he composer Ludwig van Beethoven first began to experience hearing loss in his mid-20s. He also suffered from chronic stomach pain and, towards the end of his life, displayed jaundice – the yellow skin associated with liver disease. His health problems have been the subject of much speculation and a team of international scientists have finally gotten some answers: thanks to developments in whole genome sequencing and five strands of his hair. The research, published in Current Biology today, was unable to find a genetic explanation for the hearing loss but did find he had a Hepatitis B infection in the months leading up to his death, as well as genetic risk factors for liver disease that “likely contributed to his death.” It took more than a billion dollars and 20 years to sequence the first human genome. … [Read more...] about InnovationRx: Beethoven’s Genome; Plus, Billionaires Back New Kind Of Health Research
‘That’s Just Not True’: GOP Senator Slams Military Officials For Blaming ‘Discrimination’ For Recruiting Problems
Military officials relied on a survey finding that fear of being discriminated against was a top reason for low propensity to join the military to explain the military’s ongoing recruiting problems in a hearing Wednesday. The Department of Defense has focused efforts in recent years to promote diversity, equity and inclusion in the force. Those efforts “suggest to the American people that the military has a problem with diversity and extremism,” Republican Missouri Sen. Roger Wicker said at the hearing. Republican Missouri Sen. Roger Wicker denied at a hearing Wednesday that discrimination is a problem in the military after service leaders relied on a study that found fears of discrimination factored into young people’s hesitance to serve. The Army conducted a survey of more than 2,000 individuals from the ages of 16 to 28 in the summer of 2022 aimed at uprooting the main reasons only 9% of young people express interest in military service, a historic low, according to … [Read more...] about ‘That’s Just Not True’: GOP Senator Slams Military Officials For Blaming ‘Discrimination’ For Recruiting Problems
