advertisement advertisement In the battles to defeat insurgents—and win hearts and minds—in Iraq and Afghanistan, the most powerful weapon troops often need is not brawn. It’s information. Information about whether a certain village leader can be trusted or not. Information about whether there have been attacks recently on the road you’re about to travel down. Information about who’s likely to lie to you and who’s likely to tell the truth. And yet, many of the units tasked with building relationships in the areas in which they’re operating–to bring stability and ferret out enemy fighters–are hobbled by antiquated intelligence systems incapable of serving up the information those units need as quickly and effectively as they require. That’s why a team of ex-Green Berets founded Aptus Technologies. They’re now building the tools they wish they’d had–tools that a U.S. Army colonel tasked with exploring … [Read more...] about Smartphones on the Ground: Ex-Green Berets Bring Tech to Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan

Sony’s mobile division has been underperforming in recent years, with 2019 being no exception. The Japanese tech giant had a weak third quarter in 2019 with sales down 32 percent. Sony’s 2019 lineup introduced a new form factor for smartphones with the 21:9 aspect ratio, but that didn’t help it match competitors like Apple, Samsung, and OnePlus.Despite the slowdown in sales, Sony isn’t ready to throw in the towel just yet. The company is reportedly working on its flagship smartphone, which could be called the Xperia 3. The device was recently spotted in renders, revealing the front and right side of the handset. advertisement advertisement When you think of Afghanistan, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? War? Taliban? Makes sense. How about “The next Bangalore”? Probably not. But there’s a team at the Pentagon working on that. And last week, they brought five Afghan entrepreneurs to Silicon Valley and New York to give them a glimpse of the U.S. tech industry. “We’re showing them what a startup environment feels like,” Paul Brinkley, Deputy Under Secretary of Defense, tells Fast Company. Christina Mercando spends a lot of her time shopping. “I look at rings,” she told Fast Company, “and pick out the ones that can be Ringlys.” advertisement advertisement Ringly, a ring that connects to a smartphone and alerts wearers about incoming texts or calls via vibration and flashing lights, is Mercando’s mission to merge fashion and technology. And despite housing an accelerometer, Bluetooth LE, a motor, and tiny LEDs, the wearable device, which will go on sale next summer, won’t look like a gadget. “Design is our top focus,” says Mercando, a former product VP at the personalization service Hunch, which was later acquired by eBay. “We want our customers to want to buy the products even if they didn’t have the functionality.” After months of research and $1 million in funding, Mercando, the cofounder and CEO of Ringly, has settled on gold-plated brass bands with stones for the initial merchandise.
