Google calls in help from Larry Page and Sergey Brin for A.I. fight

January 20, 2023 by www.moneycontrol.com

Larry Page (Image: Reuters) Last month, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, Google’s founders, held several meetings with company executives. The topic: a rival’s new chatbot, a clever A.I. product that looked as if it could be the first notable threat in decades to Google’s $149 billion search business. Mr. Page and Mr. Brin, who had not spent much time at Google since they left their daily roles with the company in 2019, reviewed Google’s artificial intelligence product strategy, according to two people with knowledge of the meetings who were not allowed to discuss them. They approved plans and pitched ideas to put more chatbot features into Google’s search engine. And they offered advice to company leaders, who have put A.I. front and center in their plans. The re-engagement of Google’s founders, at the invitation of the company’s current chief executive, Sundar Pichai, emphasized the urgency felt among many Google executives about artificial intelligence and that chatbot, … [Read more...] about Google calls in help from Larry Page and Sergey Brin for A.I. fight

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin With the heat of ChatGPT, the fastest growing app in the history of the web, no wonder Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google feels the need to enter with a challenge. Google plans to release its most powerful and latest language model, LaMDA, as a companion to its search engine in weeks or in months. It will be interesting to see the trajectory comparatives between the two emerging Chat Titans. Although Google’s forth quarter earnings call was done this week, Pichai said, "AI is the most profound technology we are working on today." This is a pre-cursor announcement which will come shortly due to the momentum of OpenView’s GPT3. Given the speed Google works on releases, I would not be surprized if we even see a release to the developer community next week. The Job Market Is Defying Economic Gravity

February 3, 2023 by www.investopedia.com

The economy is slowing down and inflation is cooling, with no mass layoffs in sight—that’s not supposed to happen. Friday’s news that employers kicked hiring into high gear in January by adding 517,000 jobs came as a surprise for a number of reasons. Layoffs at Google ( GOOGL) and other tech companies have dominated headlines . Other parts of the economy have been slowing down , with a multitude of indicators flashing warning signs of a recession. The domino effect of a slow down usually causes a surge in the unemployment level, and economists had expected those headwinds to at least curb the pace of job gains. “It’s clearly the tale of two economies,” said Ryan Sweet, chief U.S. economist at Oxford Economics. “The labor market is extremely tight. It's very strong, but the rest of the economy is slowing down.” Those two things don’t usually go together, but the pandemic may have overturned the old rules. “Historical experience may prove to be misleading in 2023,” said … [Read more...] about The Job Market Is Defying Economic Gravity
