August 10, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A (Aug 10): The US Department of Justice (DOJ) is preparing to sue Google as soon as next month, according to people familiar with the matter, capping years of work to build a case that the Alphabet Inc unit illegally dominates the digital advertising market. Lawyers with the DOJ’s antitrust division are questioning publishers, in another round of interviews, to refresh facts and glean additional details for the complaint, said three people familiar with the conversations, who asked not to be named discussing an ongoing investigation. Some of the interviews have already taken place, and others are scheduled in the coming weeks, according to two of the people. They build on previous interrogations conducted during an earlier stage of the long-running investigation, the people said. An ad tech complaint, which Bloomberg had reported was in the works last year, would mark the DOJ’s second case against Google, following the government’s 2020 lawsuit alleging … [Read more...] about US DOJ preparing to sue Google over digital ad market ‘domination’ as soon as September

The Benefits of Licensing for Startups.

July 29, 2022 by www.inc.com

Startup founders need every tool at their disposal to successfully launch and grow their businesses. One of those tools is a clear understanding of how the licensing business model can be employed to support their goals , including speed to market and filing intellectual property that is attractive to investors. The concept of licensing has been around for a very long time. The inventor of the first patented technology -- Samuel Hopkins, in 1790, for a new method of manufacturing potash and pearl ash -- licensed it to a local businessman the next year, says historian Arthur Daemmrich at the Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation. Basically, one party (the inventor or artist) grants another party (typically a company) the right to produce and sell something they created. As far as I can tell, most startup founders aren't very familiar with the concept of licensing a product onto the market. Venturing -- the traditional method of bringing a … [Read more...] about The Benefits of Licensing for Startups.

Sri Mulyani calls for ‘level playing field’ through fintech policy approach

November 19, 2020 by www.thejakartapost.com

Adrian Wail Akhlas (The Jakarta Post) PREMIUM Jakarta   ● Thu, November 19, 2020 Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati has called for fair competition in the financial technology (fintech) industry to support economic growth while raising concerns over potential domination by bigger companies. The minister pointed to the absence of a “level playing field” in the fintech industry and said that as fintech startups grew, they were usually acquired by even bigger companies. “There will never be a level playing field because the bigger the company, the bigger their capital and liquidity to dominate the market. […] It is going to be difficult for new entrants to establish their presence,” she told a forum held by Bloomberg on Wednesday. to Read Full Story SUBSCRIBE NOW Starting from IDR 55,500/month Unlimited access to our web and app content e-Post daily digital newspaper No advertisements, no interruptions Privileged access to our events and … [Read more...] about Sri Mulyani calls for ‘level playing field’ through fintech policy approach

August 8, 2022 by www.investopedia.com

U.S. stocks continued to claw their way back last week, especially growth stocks . For the week, the Nasdaq posted a gain of 2.2% and the S&P 500 rose 0.4%. The Dow? Not so much, sliding just 0.1%. A blowout jobs report for July offered up another dose of good news for the economy and not-so-good news for the stock market, but equity investors hung in there. U.S. employers added 528,000 jobs to their payrolls last month , which was more than twice what was expected, and that added credence to the Federal Reserve 's stance that the U.S. economy is not in a recession given the continued strength of the labor market. So, the thinking goes, the Fed will continue to be aggressive in raising interest rates to cool down inflation, because it's not impacting companies' willingness to hire. That led to a steep selloff in U.S. Treasurys, with the yield on the 10-year Treasury note ending the week at 2.83%. Oil prices continue to tumble, hitting their lowest level since early … [Read more...] about Live from InvestFest with Downtown Josh Brown, BitBoy Crypto, and Lamar Wilson

Business of Sports: Lionesses deserve larger share of football’s spoils

August 10, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

This article first appeared in Forum, The Edge Malaysia Weekly, on August 8, 2022 - August 14, 2022. - A + A For the hosts, for women’s football and for equality, it could hardly have gone better. The Women’s Euro 2022 championship, won by England, was played before packed crowds, record TV audiences, and is being hailed as “a watershed” for both the sport and the women’s rights movement. Clearly, the goalposts have shifted. It was great for business and the football was pretty good, too. In England, sponsors are rushing to make unknown players overnight millionaires, while male chauvinists are admitting that women can actually play the game. Some are even jesting that the Lionesses’ coach, Sarina Wiegman, should take over the men’s team! But for it to make a global impact, two questions remain: Will the interest last and will it spread? If both answers are in the affirmative, the potential is truly off the charts. According to AC Nielsen, football … [Read more...] about Business of Sports: Lionesses deserve larger share of football’s spoils
