Zika’s silent spread calls for urgent need to strengthen virus surveillance: ICMR study

June 24, 2022 by www.moneycontrol.com

Zika virus is primarily transmitted by the bite of an infected mosquito from the Aedes genus, mainly Aedes aegypti. (Representative image) Emphasising the pressing need for an enhanced surveillance of Zika virus cases in India, an Indian Council of Medical Research’s (ICMR) study has shown that the infection has silently spread to almost all parts of the country. The ICMR scientists conducted a retrospective screening of dengue and chikungunya negative clinical samples which were stored in labs to understand the extent of the spread of Zika in India. The scientists who conducted the study revealed the virus was in circulation in Delhi, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Telangana, in addition to Kerala, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh in 2021. Dr Pragya Yadav, top scientist at the ICMR-National Institute of Virology (NIV), said that the vector control method (mosquito control method) is an important step that should be employed rigorously by state governments. Beijing to reopen schools, Shanghai declares victory over COVID

June 25, 2022 by www.moneycontrol.com

Xi'an is the capital of Shaanxi province, famed for the Terracotta Warriors and other imperial relics. Representative Image: AP) Beijing on Saturday said it would allow primary and secondary schools to resume in-person classes and Shanghai’s top party boss declared victory over COVID-19 after the city reported zero new local cases for the first time in two months. The two major cities were among several places in China that implemented curbs to stop the spread of the Omicron wave during March to May, with Shanghai imposing a two month-long city-wide lockdown that lifted on June 1. The efforts, part of China’s adherence to a zero-COVID policy that aims to eradicate all outbreaks, have brought case numbers down but many of the heavy-handed measures have fuelled anger and even rare protests and taken a heavy toll on the economy. Beijing shut its schools in early May and asked students to move to online learning amid a spike in locally transmitted COVID cases. Senior year … [Read more...] about Beijing to reopen schools, Shanghai declares victory over COVID

Mud, sweat and cheers: Traditional water buffalo race enthralls Chon Buri crowds

June 26, 2022 by www.bangkokpost.com

Racers run with their buffaloes in a traditional buffalo race during the rice-planting festival in Chonburi on Sunday to celebrate the start of paddy-sowing season. (AFP photo) Boys scurry, duck and weave through crowds sheltering from the suffocating heat before upending buckets of cooling water on beefy bovines waiting to compete at the annual traditional buffalo races in Chon Buri on Sunday. The riotously noisy, muddy and slightly chaotic annual tradition marks the beginning of the rice planting season -- with the festival-like atmosphere in the eastern province taking place for the first time in two years. The main event sees four pairs of harnessed buffalo gallop across a decorated paddy field, with intrepid racers sprinting barefoot through the shallow muddy waters and attempting to both control their beasts and remain upright. "Before the race starts, we are a little excited and nervous," said Sompong Ratanasatien, 33, drenched and breathing heavily after his latest … [Read more...] about Mud, sweat and cheers: Traditional water buffalo race enthralls Chon Buri crowds

Trump Moved More Than $1 Million From His Political Groups To His Private Business After Losing The Election

June 26, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin D onald Trump never stopped raising funds from his supporters after the 2020 presidential race. His companies, meanwhile, continued to charge his political outfits for goods and services. As a result, the former president has been able to convert about $1.3 million of donor money into business revenue since he lost the 2020 election, according to a review of the latest federal filings. In the months immediately following the election, much of the money came via Trump’s official campaign committee, Donald J. Trump for President, Inc. On December 1, 2020, the committee paid $38,000 in rent to Trump Tower Commercial LLC, the entity through which the former president owns space inside Trump Tower. Fifteen days later, another $38,000 of rent moved from the campaign committee to that same LLC. The committee also made two payments of $3,000 at about the same time to an entity named Trump Restaurants LLC. Overturning Roe V. Wade: Here’s How Abortion Bans Will Hurt State Economies And The GDP

June 25, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline The Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade Friday, a monumental ruling for reproductive rights that’s also expected to broadly impact the economy, as a study from the International Women’s Policy Center found state economies already lose billions due to abortion restrictions—an issue that’s likely to now grow “exponentially.” Key Facts Numerous studies have found abortion restrictions and being denied an abortion have negative economic impacts —including by reducing participation in the labor force, decreasing earnings and increasing rates of poverty and debt—and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned in May overturning Roe “would set women back decades” economically. Those effects are felt at the broader societal level: Abortion restrictions cost state economies an estimated $105 billion per year and getting rid of all state-level restrictions would increase the national GDP by nearly 0.5%, the … [Read more...] about Overturning Roe V.
