NEW YORK: U.S. stocks closed lower on Monday, with few catalysts to sway investor sentiment as they approach the half-way point of a year in which the equity markets have been slammed by heightened inflation worries and tightening Fed policy. The major U.S. stock indexes lost ground after oscillating earlier in the session, with weakness in interest rate sensitive megacaps such as Amazon.com AMZN.O , Microsoft Corp MSFT.O and Alphabet Inc GOOGL.O providing the heaviest drag. "The reason for lack of direction this week and next week is investors are looking for what’s going to happen in the second quarter reporting period," said Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist of CFRA Research in New York. All three indexes are on course to notch two straight quarterly declines for the first time since 2015. They also appear set to post losses for June, which would mark three consecutive down months for the tech-heavy Nasdaq, its longest losing streak since 2015. From Supply Crunch To Supply Glut: How To Navigate Uncertainty?
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Retailers might have thought they’d seen enough disruption these past two years to last a lifetime. If only this was the case. The industry must once again confront a new set of economic headwinds. From high inflation to eroding confidence to ongoing supply chain issues, pressure on the global economy is growing — and the effects are weighing heavily on both consumers and businesses. Consider the recent decline in consumer spending and sentiment. Retail sales have contracted since 2021, and consumer sentiment is down significantly, nearing levels we last saw at the time of the 2008 financial crisis. Clearly, inflationary pressures are a factor here. High and persistent inflation is eating into incomes and consumer purchasing power. Discretionary spending is pulling back as a result. However, Accenture’s ACN analysis indicates other dynamics are also in play. Take the fact that consumer spending on durable … [Read more...] about From Supply Crunch To Supply Glut: How To Navigate Uncertainty?
I spent six weeks living in A24-world. Here’s what happened
What makes A24 a cultural powerhouse is not that it released a film last spring in which an inter-dimensional assassin impales himself on an Auditor of the Month trophy, inexplicably shaped like a certain sex toy, although it most certainly did. It’s not that most cinephiles would immediately guess A24 as the company who put out that film, Everything Everywhere All at Once , even if its logo didn’t appear before the credits, although they probably would. No, what makes A24 a steady, sturdy phenomenon is that it started selling $60 designer candle replicas of that unlikely trophy just after the movie’s early-June digital release. advertisement advertisement Whether enough fans purchase the item—a collaboration with Brooklyn-based design studio, Joya —to justify its overhead cost is incidental. Everything Everywhere is now A24’s biggest hit ever , its $89 million box-office haul rendering the digital release a victory lap. The very existence … [Read more...] about I spent six weeks living in A24-world. Here’s what happened

These pieces can be snapped together in any combination, making for an open-source, DIY analog synthesizer with hundreds of thousands of possible arrangements. At last Thursday’s launch event in New York City’s East Village, these little interchangeable widgets were … [Read more...] about This Open Source DIY Synthesizer Makes Music Hacking Dead Simple

(Photo by Adrian DENNIS / AFP) Wimbledon chief executive Sally Bolton said Monday she was relieved the world’s top stars had showed up at the Grand Slam even though no ranking points will be on offer. Both the ATP and WTA, which control the men’s and women’s tours, removed the points after the All England Club banned Russian and Belarusian players in response to the invasion of Ukraine. It means players such as US Open champion Daniil Medvedev, Andrey Rublev, Aryna Sabalenka and Victoria Azarenka cannot play in London. Bolton, who said the decision to ban the players had been “incredibly difficult”, reiterated that Wimbledon organizers were disappointed with the decision taken by ATP and WTA. “We thought it was a disproportionate decision in the context of the situation we found ourselves in and in the context … [Read more...] about Wimbledon ‘relieved’ to host top stars despite loss of ranking points
Top Cannabis Researcher Predicts Double-Digit Increase In Sales On July 4th
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin A top cannabis researcher is predicting that despite valid concerns surrounding inflation, sales on July 4th will generate a double-digit increase, likely racking up the highest number in sales for any day in the market this summer.
