Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The metaverse – everyone is talking about it, but no one is exactly sure what it actually is. This makes it a bit difficult if we want to put together a list of platforms or experiences that represent the best of what it could be. But if we take it to mean persistent, connected digital environments which focus on providing immersive experiences for users, we can have a go at highlighting some projects – existing and on the horizon - which stand out. Not all of the projects highlighted here involve virtual reality, or decentralization, or cryptocurrency. Although those are all technologies that are likely to have a place in the metaverse , it isn’t strictly essential that they are part of every metaverse. So rather than focusing on examples that tick all of the boxes, today’s best examples tend to be those that do one or more of the core elements particularly well. Not all of these are fully functional yet (and one … [Read more...] about The 10 Best Examples Of The Metaverse Everyone Should Know About

Dissection by TikTok: Johnny Depp, Amber Heard trial posts are making accidental influencers out of some, targets out of others
(CNN) TikTok posts about actor Johnny Depp's defamation trial against his ex-wife, actress Amber Heard, have turned a stay-at-home mom based in Scotland into an accidental influencer. Or, perhaps more aptly, a DeppTok influencer. Sophie Doggett, whose TikTok was previously populated by videos on everyday things such as herself or her pets, posted to her TikTok account on April 25 a clip of Heard's lawyer asking a question of a witness and then immediately objecting to the response. It is one of many moments in the trial that has been seized upon by people like Doggett, as clips of testimony and references to the case have pervaded TikTok in a way that no trial has before. That's partly because the proceeding, set to resume Monday, is being livestreamed during the age of TikTok, and also because of the high-profile celebrities the case involves. Doggett, who paired the clip to playful music, said she gained 30,000 followers seemingly overnight from the post which has, to date, … [Read more...] about Dissection by TikTok: Johnny Depp, Amber Heard trial posts are making accidental influencers out of some, targets out of others

DJ Justin Blau’s crypto startup Royal wants to remix the music industry
As an early adopter of crypto, DJ and producer Justin “3LAU” Blau immediately drew a line from blockchain technology to the music industry. advertisement advertisement In 2018, he launched a blockchain-powered music festival where attendees scanned QR codes to earn collectible assets. In 2021, he commemorated the three-year anniversary of his album Ultraviolet by auctioning 33 NFTs tied to songs from the album, physical vinyl, and unreleased music—all of which pulled in $11.6 million in just 24 hours. “All the people who had spent money on that stuff believed in the narrative that I was pushing for many years,” Blau says. “I felt an innate responsibility to see the technology evolve into what I wanted it to be.” So last year, alongside entrepreneur JD Ross, Blau cofounded Royal, a marketplace where artists can sell their music royalties to fans as NFTs—or, as Blau prefers to call them, “limited digital assets.” advertisement … [Read more...] about DJ Justin Blau’s crypto startup Royal wants to remix the music industry
73 of India’s 100 unicorns have at least one founder from IIT
In his book, The Golden Tap, serial entrepreneur Kashyap Deorah had described how Lee Fixel, a former partner with Tiger Global, used to filter potential startups on the basis of the founders' caste and JEE (advanced) ranks. Only candidates with high JEE (joint entrance examination) ranks make it to India’s premier technical institutes -- the central-government owned Indian Institutes of Technology, commonly known as IITs. “Fixel preferred North Indian Marwari banias with single or double-digit JEE ranks who were young and first-time entrepreneurs. An analysis had probably revealed that such entrepreneurs were the best performers in the companies Tiger liked funding,” Deorah had written. Fixel had led negotiations for funding rounds for Tiger Global in unicorns like Flipkart and Ola, which were among the New York-based hedge fund’s largest bets in India. Both the companies best fit Deorah’s description as Sachin and Binny Bansal, founders of Flipkart, come from IIT Delhi, … [Read more...] about 73 of India’s 100 unicorns have at least one founder from IIT
How a trash-talking crypto bro caused a $40 billion crash
Much of the pain of the collapse has instead been felt by regular traders. A neuroscientist on the shifts in our media use and the effect on our brains
Scanning the news online, a headline catches my attention: “Man, Distracted by Electronic Device, Identified after Falling to Death at Sunset Cliffs.” advertisement advertisement The authorities identified the victim as a 33-year-old Indiana man who was visiting friends in San Diego. Witnesses said he was not watching he was going and was obviously “looking down at the device in his hands.” To be sure, this is an extreme example. But they illustrate how serious the consequences of tech behavior can be. Many of our new media, communications, and information technology habits are resulting not only in more accidents from distractions but also reduced productivity, disrupted relationships, increasing mental and physical health problems, and public safety issues that we need to take seriously and address as a society. In fact, many of the consequences of our new behaviors are so severe that experts are starting to describe them with the language of … [Read more...] about A neuroscientist on the shifts in our media use and the effect on our brains
