Reforms can immunise Indian economy against shocks in 2022
Since the onset of the Covid pandemic, the economy has entered a VUCA phase. VUCA describes an environment that is Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous. World GDP growth went from 2.8 percent in 2019 to -3.1 percent in 2020 and the IMF’s projected growth for 2021 is 5.9 percent. The Indian economy has followed a similar trajectory. We can borrow three terms from the lexicon of risk management to understand what lies ahead for the economy in 2022. These are the known knowns (facts), the known unknowns (possibilities) and the unknown unknowns (black swans). Known knowns The US Fed has doubled the pace of tapering. It will now reduce its monthly purchase of bonds by $30 billion. The Fed’s bond buying will end by March 2022 and interest rates will be raised from June. While a short-term negative reaction is expected from emerging stock markets, due to fears of flight of capital, the taper should be read as a sign that the US economy does not need a monetary stimulus … [Read more...] about Reforms can immunise Indian economy against shocks in 2022
Covid Saw An Exodus Of Over 50s From The Workforce
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin I've written a few times about both the value of older workers and the need for society to change how we perceive older people. This is especially so given the widely documented skills shortages across the economy in recent years. It should be hugely worrying, therefore, that the Covid pandemic has seen huge numbers of older workers leaving the workforce. In the UK alone around 300,000 extra workers aged between 50 and 65 have been identified as economically inactive since the start of the pandemic. Economic inactivity A recent study from the University of Essex explores some of the possible impacts this economic inactivity could have on the economy. The analysis reveals that while it may seem intuitive to think that those leaving the workforce are those with more financial stability, it is actually those with middle to lower-middle incomes that tend to be leaving. Indeed, the biggest rise in economic inactivity … [Read more...] about Covid Saw An Exodus Of Over 50s From The Workforce
Avoid These 5 Mentoring Mistakes To Build Truly Inspired Teams
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin As workers continue to seek greener pastures, employers continue to see droves of their talent walking out the door. Microsoft’s Work Trend Index 2021 researched more than 30,000 people across 31 countries and found that 40% intend to look for another job. According to a McKinsey study , 41% of those who leave do so because of a lack of career development. More professionals are re-evaluating their priorities and identifying what they need and want from their employers. Microsoft executive Lani Phillips suggests that companies have undervalued mentoring as a talent management practice. She says that (when done properly) it can significantly change an employee’s engagement with their company. Data backs this up. A 2019 survey showed that 91% of people who have a mentor are satisfied at work. This is important because according to Gallup only 20% of employees globally are actually engaged in their work. Another … [Read more...] about Avoid These 5 Mentoring Mistakes To Build Truly Inspired Teams
Educating The Next Generation Of Data Scientists
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Dr. Lee Harland , founder and Chief Scientific Officer, SciBite (an Elsevier company). In recent years, artificial intelligence has become mainstream. Today, more enterprises in more industries are looking to technology like AI for a competitive edge and to help them manage the overwhelming volumes of data they both generate and collect. A recent study by IBM put the “global AI adoption rate” at 35% and found that 44% of global organizations are currently working on embedding AI into their operations. But despite this continued uptick in AI adoption, one element sure to put the brakes on many initiatives is the global skills shortage. Successful AI requires competent data scientists. And companies are scrambling to hire people with the requisite skills in a very shallow talent pool. As technology continues to advance and new innovations emerge—from neural networks to quantum computing—the problem is only going to … [Read more...] about Educating The Next Generation Of Data Scientists
