SC favors drug war widow, calls PNP ops ‘extralegal killing’

August 10, 2022 by newsinfo.inquirer.net

Screenshot of the Supreme Court main building MANILA, Philippines — The Supreme Court has ruled that the privilege of the writ of amparo is meant to protect victims from the threat of extrajudicial killing, as it upheld a protective order for a woman who lost her husband to the Duterte administration’s war on drugs in 2016. In denying the petition of law enforcers to dismiss the writ, the high court explicitly recognized the death of Christina Gonzales’ husband as an “extralegal killing,” and affirmed the finding of the Court of Appeals (CA) that the widow had good reason to fear for her life. Gonzales’ husband, Joselito, was a suspected drug dealer who was killed in a police operation in Antipolo City in July 2016, shortly after then-President Rodrigo Duterte came into power. The previous administration’s bloody campaign against illegal drugs claimed the lives of thousands of drug suspects, for which Duterte and his subordinates were charged with crimes against humanity in … [Read more...] about SC favors drug war widow, calls PNP ops ‘extralegal killing’

DITO slapped P622-M bill for fraudulent calls

August 10, 2022 by business.inquirer.net

Globe Telecom Inc. wants DITO Telecommunity to pay P622 million in penalty for allegedly violating their interconnecting agreement, claiming that fraudulent calls were made through the third telco player’s network to the Ayala-led channel. In a statement on Tuesday, Globe said it had asked the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to compel the Davao businessman Dennis Uy-led telco firm to compensate it for the latter’s actions. “An average of 1,000 fraudulent calls—identified as international in origin but masked as local calls—are allowed to pass through DITO’s network to Globe users every day, in violation of interconnect rules,” Globe explained, noting that such calls continue to pass through DITO’s network. The interconnectivity deals of Globe and DITO allow their users to call and send messages to each other. The Ayala-led company said the penalty covers July 2021 to July 2022 due to “DITO’s adamant refusal to compensate Globe, defying provisions of its … [Read more...] about DITO slapped P622-M bill for fraudulent calls

Landbank services to gov’t employes, 4Ps, pensioners need improvement

August 9, 2022 by opinion.inquirer.net

If you are a relative of government employees, you would have heard “horror stories” of “very poor” banking service and unresponsive feedback from the government-owned and operated Land Bank of the Philippines. Together with Pantawid Pamilya beneficiaries and elderly pensioners, they are experiencing “unavailable ATM machines”, downtimes and outages, especially during “sweldo” time. It is becoming normal to see long lines of people in Landbank branches in Metro Manila. We were told that on a per-day basis, Landbank can only service up to 1.1 million transactions in its banking operations nationwide. Clearly, this “service quota number” is not enough for all the daily transactions of more than 2 million government employees, about 4.4 million Pantawid Pamilya beneficiaries and the 3.3-million indigent senior citizens. Why are they allowing this? Are they not aware that people need money due to present hard times yet they continue to inflict harm and delays? I was informed that in … [Read more...] about Landbank services to gov’t employes, 4Ps, pensioners need improvement
