Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin In healthcare, as in life, people devote a lot of time and attention to the way things should be. They’d be better off focusing on what actually could be. As an example, 57% to 70% of American voters believe our nation “should” adopt a single-payer healthcare system like Medicare For All. Likewise, public health advocates insist that more of the nation’s $4 trillion healthcare budget “should” be spent on combating the social determinants of health: things like housing insecurity, low-wage jobs and other socioeconomic stresses. Neither of these ideas will happen, nor will dozens of positive healthcare solutions that “should” happen. When the things that should happen don’t, there’s always a reason. In healthcare, the biggest roadblock to change is what I call the conglomerate of monopolies , which includes hospitals , drug companies , private-equity-staked physicians and commercial health insurers . Grand Jury Investigating Trump Expected To Reconvene
The New York grand jury investigating whether former President Donald Trump should be indicted for allegedly making an illegal hush money payment to pornographic actress Stormy Daniels is reportedly expected to reconvene Monday. The grand jury last met Tuesday — the day Trump claimed he would be arrested — and did not deliberate the case on Wednesday and Thursday as expected. The 23 jurors will likely reconvene Monday, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing anonymous sources familiar with the matter. A majority vote from the jury is required for Trump to be indicted. The potential charges stem from Trump’s lawyer Michael Cohen paying Daniels $130,000 before the 2016 election to keep her from speaking about an alleged affair with Trump. In 2018, Cohen pleaded guilty to violating federal campaign finance laws when making the payment. Every U.S. Crypto Exchange (And Binance) Is Being Investigated By The SEC, Says Senator Lummis Staffer
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Widely circulated reports that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is investigating $20 billion crypto exchange Coinbase are just the tip of the iceberg, according to a staffer from U.S. Senator Cynthia Lummis’ (R-Wy) office. The staffer says every U.S. crypto exchange—and the largest crypto exchange in the world, Binance—are in various stages of being investigated. There are more than 40 U.S. cryptocurrency exchanges, according to crypto data site, CoinGecko. The SEC has not responded to multiple requests for comment. Coming in the wake of a number of SEC actions asserting the regulator’s domain over the crypto industry, and an equally strong response by the U.S Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) pushing back against what it characterizes as “regulation through enforcement,” the staffer says the SEC urgently wants to resolve its dispute with the CFTC over crypto jurisdiction. If the matter isn’t … [Read more...] about Every U.S. Crypto Exchange (And Binance) Is Being Investigated By The SEC, Says Senator Lummis Staffer

Paris 2024: Will Electric Air Taxis Be Ready For Summer Olympics?
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The company that operates Paris’ airports insists that plans are moving ahead to launch an air taxi service for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Solène Le Bris of Groupe ADP, which manages Charles De Gaulle and Orly airports, confirmed the timeline while speaking at an Amsterdam drone conference, according to The Guardian. “We are trying to launch the first e-VTOL [vertical takeoff and landing] pre-commercial service in the world: that’s our ambition,” she said. The air taxis are designed by a company called VoloCity . The first of five “vertiports” opened last year Cergy-Pontoise to help test the service. Eventually, commercial passengers will be able to board and disembark from the air taxis at these points. While the service may potentially be revolutionary, its practical impact will likely be limited. The air taxis only have room for the pilot and one passenger. Can You Use Your 529 To Take A Cruise?
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin “Has anyone had clients actually do the apocryphal story of a client using a 529 to go on a continuing education cruise of Europe?” asked one of my peers in a recent forum, “Trying to figure (this out) after client asked.” Can You Get An Education At Sea? However, these are all continuing education classes, not college courses from an accredited school. These are for-profit companies … [Read more...] about Can You Use Your 529 To Take A Cruise?
Ten Questions With OpenAI On Reinforcement Learning With Human Feedback
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Recently, we interviewed Long Ouyang and Ryan Lowe, research scientists at OpenAI . As the creators of InstructGPT – one of the first major applications of reinforcement learning with human feedback (RLHF) to train large language models – the two played an important role in the evolution of RLHF models and paving the way for GPT-4. Here are some highlights from the conversation. What's the motivation behind InstructGPT? And what are the problems with GPT-3 that inspired InstructGPT? Long Ouyang: I think one of the main issues we’re trying to solve is that when GPT-3 came out there was a lot of excitement about using it to do useful cognitive work, for example, summarizing a news article. Out of the box it’s not exactly designed to do that, it’s designed to predict what someone on the internet might say in a given setting. And it turns out that you can kind of trick the model into performing useful work for you … [Read more...] about Ten Questions With OpenAI On Reinforcement Learning With Human Feedback
Prevent Costly Procurement Disasters: 6 Science-Backed Techniques For Bias-Free Decision Making
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin A biased bid selection process represents one of the biggest threats for procurement officials. Such bias leads to a bad selection decision for a government contract, wasting taxpayer money. Moreover, it may lead to a procurement bid protest. The Government Accountability Office (GAO) put out a report in 2017, which found that a “flawed selection decision” was one of the top four reasons for successful bid protests - and over 22% of bid protests succeeded that year. So how should procurement officials protect their procurement selection process from bias? Doing so requires a basic grasp of behavioral science research on cognitive biases and how to defeat them . What Do Lawyers Working on Bid Protests Say About Bias? In 2021, the US Congress commissioned a bid protest study at the Defense Department referencing the work of Dr. Christopher Yukins , a professor of procurement law at the George Washington … [Read more...] about Prevent Costly Procurement Disasters: 6 Science-Backed Techniques For Bias-Free Decision Making
