U.S. Prescription Drug Pricing Doesn’t Favor The Patient: Case Of Sub-Optimal Market For Cancer Pharmaceuticals

August 3, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The high costs of cancer drugs impact patients negatively. In fact, the out-of-pocket cost burden can be “ financially toxic ” to patients, causing personal bankruptcy or simply take a substantial bite out of people’s discretionary income. Should the Inflation Reduction Act pass later this month, the imposition of a $2,000 cap on Medicare beneficiary out-of-pocket spending on outpatient drugs would address the issue of financial toxicity to some degree, at least for one segment (Medicare) of the market. Currently, 1.5 million medicare beneficiaries pay more than $2,000 out-of-pocket for prescription drugs, while 1.3 million spend more than $7,000. Many of these Medicare beneficiaries are cancer patients. High patient out-of-pocket costs aren’t just a reflection of a poorly designed Medicare prescription drug benefit. More generally, they also reflect a market for cancer drugs which doesn’t function optimally. … [Read more...] about U.S. Prescription Drug Pricing Doesn’t Favor The Patient: Case Of Sub-Optimal Market For Cancer Pharmaceuticals

New York Polio Update: Hundreds May Be Infected, Based On Wastewater Findings In 2 Counties

August 6, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin What a waste. On Thursday, the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) announced that they had found poliovirus in wastewater samples from two counties, Orange County and Rockland County, in June and July. This water polio announcement came two weeks after the NYSDOH had announced on July 21 that an unvaccinated adult in Rockland County had gotten infected with the poliovirus and as a result became paralyzed. If you are wondering, “hmmm, polio, I don’t get it,” that’s because the U.S. was declared polio-free in 1979. That declaration came after years of public health efforts to get the U.S. population vaccinated against this dangerous and potentially deadly virus. Yet, such reappearance of the poliovirus in New York raises more concerns that continuing anti-vaccination campaigns may be setting our country back many decades and laying to waste all the hard work that had gotten the U.S. polio-free in the first place. … [Read more...] about New York Polio Update: Hundreds May Be Infected, Based On Wastewater Findings In 2 Counties

August 2, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin This is part three in a series focusing on cognitive dysfunction and inflammation. The first article can be read here , and the second can be read here . For additional writings on inflammation and Covid-19, please see my website: www. williamhaseltine.com For many people, an encounter with Covid-19 brings with it lingering cognitive symptoms, generally described as “brain fog”. And on occasion, these symptoms may last for months on end. A novel study describes why and how this might be happening. In a previous article , I gave an overview of one part of the researchers’ findings. To recapitulate in brief: SARS-CoV-2 infection can provoke serious inflammation which, through a series of “signaling cascades”, can make its way into the central nervous system, including the brain. Once there, inflammation triggers the activation of immune cells called microglia, which go haywire, causing additional … [Read more...] about Even Mild Covid-19 May Cause Lasting Brain Fog (Part 2)

June 7, 2022 by dailycaller.com

BIDEN INVOKES EMERGENCY WAR POWERS TO BUILD SOLAR PANELS… NY POST: Biden draws heat for invoking Defense Production Act to boost solar panels President Biden drew criticism Monday after invoking the Defense Production Act to potentially expedite the production of solar panels — with journalists and Republicans questioning the rationale for using special wartime powers. Renewable energy advocates, meanwhile, cheered the White House announcement that Biden would invoke the act “to accelerate domestic production of clean energy technologies, including solar panel parts.” […] The Biden administration did not specify a national-defense reason for using the act to boost solar panels. When Biden was vice president, the Obama administration aggressively pushed for solar energy production — sparking the Solyndra scandal when a politically-connected firm went bankrupt after getting $535 million in federal loan guarantees.
