BIZ BUZZ: Deal breaker or deal changer?
Remember those rumors last January that Japanese conglomerate Mitsui is close to sealing a deal to acquire a 20-percent stake in local holding firm Metro Pacific Investments Corp.? If you’ve been wondering why little else has been heard about it since President Marcos’ official visit to Tokyo in early February, it might be because the mega deal has encountered some “issues.” Some people say they’re potential “deal breakers” while others say they’re “deal changers.” Biz Buzz heard that the supposed deal may not happen according to the original plan of Japan’s second largest trading house, which was to help Metro Pacific go private. Remember that this deal was based on the premise that the shareholders of Metro Pacific were not getting the full value of the conglomerate because shares of holding firms usually trade at a discount to what they should really be worth. So it would make sense for its owners to buy back all the shares from the investing public at the discounted price, … [Read more...] about BIZ BUZZ: Deal breaker or deal changer?
Microsoft Introduces AI Copilot For The Microsoft 365 Suite For Billions Of Productivity Users
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin I attended a small event in Redmond, Washington, in early February, where Microsoft introduced the new Bing powered by ChatGPT—the first of many recent AI innovations that promise to forever change the conversation about AI. I believe it launched a transformational change in technology not seen since the introduction of the modern internet, not just with AI chatbots, but with how large language models (LLMs) will affect many aspects of our lives. Microsoft waved the proverbial green flag that day, and from that point the AI race has heated up in a way I’m not sure anyone could have predicted. The speed and progression of announcements made since then has been staggering—and it doesn’t look like it is slowing down. The company’s latest announcement, today, the introduction of Microsoft 365 Copilo t, has the potential to change the way everyday productivity tools are used by 100s of millions if not billions of people. Let's … [Read more...] about Microsoft Introduces AI Copilot For The Microsoft 365 Suite For Billions Of Productivity Users
Understanding How To Effectively Incorporate Digital Transformation And AI
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Founder LifeWIRE Corp , |CEO Nova Insights |Digital Health Exec| Strategic Advisor| Fellow, HITLAB (Columbia University)| Inventor. With Microsoft Bing amped up with its own generative artificial intelligence (AI) chat programming, there is little doubt that we are now in the era of AI being publicly part of our world. So what now? All the hype aside, will AI-type chat become as pervasive as we are hearing? I believe we will certainly get there, but there is still a long road ahead before it can be done successfully. Digital transformation is the process of using digital technologies to fundamentally change the way a business operates, delivers value to customers, and achieves its objectives. With, at best, only 26% of digital transformation being successful , what can leaders do to make sure they succeed when incorporating new digital tools? The first step is to define the problem and lay out where you are in … [Read more...] about Understanding How To Effectively Incorporate Digital Transformation And AI
How Contextual Intelligence Can Help Telco Operations
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Serial Entrepreneur, CEO and cofounder of Veego Software , a startup in the Israeli high-tech corridor, innovating smart-home support. As the connected home becomes more complex (the average house now contains 22 connected devices ), I believe that context is the next great differentiator. Too many communication service providers (CSPs) are still treating their subscriber homes as carbon copies of one another—and providing customer care to match. The impact of uncovering context can be a game-changer. It can allow CSPs to make data-driven business decisions about everything from network operations and sales to customer success and technical support. Your customers are demanding personalized and proactive service. Context can help get you there. What is "context" in telecommunications (telco)? So, what do we mean when we say “context” in relation to internet users? The truth is, there's a lot of … [Read more...] about How Contextual Intelligence Can Help Telco Operations
Poland Sending 4 Fighter Jets To Ukraine—A First For NATO
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline Polish President Andrzej Duda announced Thursday that his country will give four fighter jets to Ukraine, according to multiple reports , marking the first warplane delivery from a NATO member to Ukraine despite concerns of potentially escalating the war with Russia. Key Facts Duda said at a news conference Poland will send four MiG-29 jet fighters to Ukraine “in the next few days,” following pleas from Kyiv for help reinforcing its decimated air force, according to the New York Times . The Soviet-designed MiGs are less advanced than the American-made F-16s Ukraine has requested, though Ukrainian forces would need additional training to operate the American aircraft, and the Biden Administration has said the F-16s are not an immediate need for Ukraine. Ukraine entered the war with about 50 MiG fighter jets, but Russian missiles have downed at least 18 of the planes. Ukraine’s MiGs … [Read more...] about Poland Sending 4 Fighter Jets To Ukraine—A First For NATO
This New Workplace Benefit Could Soon Become Standard
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Bobby Matson is founder/CEO at Payitoff , automated debt guidance tools and debt APIs that get borrowers better outcomes. Shortly before the end of 2022, an otherwise gridlocked Congress passed a bipartisan piece of legislation that will have far-reaching effects on American workers and their employers, specifically regarding their retirement savings plans. Like its predecessor, the SECURE Act 2.0 —an update to 2019’s SECURE Act —was designed to encourage more retirement savings. It opens more avenues for Americans to better set themselves up for retirement, no matter their current financial situation. The update includes automatic enrollment for newly created employer-sponsored retirement plans, eligibility for part-time workers to receive retirement benefits, changes to required minimum distributions and more. Perhaps the most significant change, however, is that starting in 2024, employers will be … [Read more...] about This New Workplace Benefit Could Soon Become Standard
Cyprus Is Planning A New Military Buildup
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The new president of the Republic of Cyprus has pledged to allocate 2% of the country's gross domestic product for spending on the armed forces. Coupled with his Western foreign policy orientation and the recent lifting of the U.S. arms embargo, this pledge could have a transformative effect on the island republic's modest military. President Nikos Christodoulides made the pledge on Mar. 10 during a visit to a special forces training camp. "As long as there's an occupation in our country, we are obligated to bolster our deterrent capabilities," he declared. The occupation refers to Cyprus's division by Turkey's 1974 invasion, which led to the establishment of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) over one-third of the island. Only Turkey recognizes the TRNC and maintains a force of 35,000 troops there. While NATO has long obliged its members to allocate at least two percent of their GDPs for defense … [Read more...] about Cyprus Is Planning A New Military Buildup
LinkedIn turns 20: An oral history of an unlikely champion
When LinkedIn launched, on May 5, 2003, it wasn’t a given that it would thrive. Born during the doldrums after the original dotcom bust, it arrived at the same time as a flurry of other social networking upstarts, most of which quickly fizzled. Its emphasis on members’ professional lives rather than personal pursuits was seen by some as a strategic blunder. Even the notion of posting your résumé in public was jarringly unfamiliar and likely to be taken as an act of disloyalty. Rather than falling victim to preexisting assumptions, LinkedIn changed them. Eventually, it was not having a LinkedIn profile that was perceived as a weird career move. As the pandemic and its aftermath have reshaped work, the service has both reflected that new world and equipped workers and employers to succeed in it. Its emphasis on professionalism also offers a safe harbor from more toxic and polarizing social platforms. LinkedIn hasn’t escaped the current tech downturn—in February, it … [Read more...] about LinkedIn turns 20: An oral history of an unlikely champion
Reddit Is Being Used To Diagnose STDs, Why This Is Bad
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Gee, what’s the best way to determine whether you have a sexually transmitted disease (STD)? How about asking a bunch of total strangers? Even better, how about showing a bunch of total strangers pictures of your genitals? That’s essentially what many people seem to be doing, according to a research letter just published in JAMA . The research letter presented a study that revealed two main things: A number of people are using Reddit, a social media site with over 330 million active users a month, to crowdsource questions about whether they have an STD and what to do. If you are on Reddit, be very careful which specific online discussion community (other known as a subreddit) you join. Remember the subreddit entitled STD is not for Star Trek Discussion. That’s because if you participate in the r/STD subreddit, instead of seeing pictures of the Enterprise and crew members with red uniforms, you may see … [Read more...] about Reddit Is Being Used To Diagnose STDs, Why This Is Bad
