- A + A NEW YORK (June 29): First Solar Inc has decided against building a new factory in the US, citing uncertainties regarding trade policy and tax incentives. The biggest US solar manufacturer is still planning a manufacturing facility in either Europe or India, and Chief Executive Officer Mark Widmar expects to make a final decision within 90 days. That would come after the company completes a third US plant early next year in Ohio and its first factory in India in the second half of 2023. The decision is a setback for US President Joe Biden’s efforts to boost domestic solar manufacturing. Solar installations have slowed this year amid a US Commerce Department trade investigation, raising the prospect of tariffs on panels imported from four Southeast Asian nations. While the White House announced this month a two-year moratorium on new tariffs and took steps to encourage American production, Widmar said the moves don’t address underlying issues that give … [Read more...] about First Solar rejects US site for new factory, eyes Europe or India instead

Opinion: Airlines are facing pressure from all directions
Tom Stalnaker is an Oliver Wyman partner and the firm's global aviation sector lead. Khalid Usman is a partner in Oliver Wyman's transportation and services practice specializing in airline economics. Andrew Buchanan is a vice president in Oliver Wyman's transportation and services practice. The opinions expressed in this commentary are their own. After two years of enduring masks, social distancing and quarantines, there's not much that can come between consumers and their summer vacations this year. Outbreaks of Covid-19 no longer seem to stop them from traveling — and based on recent demand for air travel, neither do higher prices for getaways. But while consumers may have gotten over fears of Covid, the economy is still riddled with its impacts — including high fuel prices , disrupted supply chains, and a labor market filled with workers hoping to work at least part of the time from home. For airlines, busy summer travel is turning into a season of operational … [Read more...] about Opinion: Airlines are facing pressure from all directions
Taking Stock | Market ends lower in choppy session ahead of expiry, auto and PMI data
Stock Market Today: The Indian market ended lower after a volatile session on June 29, a day ahead of the monthly expiry with investors also nervous about monthly auto numbers and PMI data to be released later in the week. At close, the 30-pack Sensex lost 0.25 percent, or 134.31 points, to end the day at 53,027, while the broad-based Nifty ended lower by 32.95 points, or 0.21 percent, at 15,799. “Consumer confidence is declining rapidly due to the uncontrolled and constant rise in inflation as India had to bear the double whammy effect of a dampening global equity market and rising crude prices as major suppliers like Saudi are unable to boost the output in the short-term”, said Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services. The domestic market, however, was able to recover most of the losses due to a strong movement in index heavyweights, PSUs, metals and oil & gas stocks before squandering some of the gains at the end of the day due to a volatile global … [Read more...] about Taking Stock | Market ends lower in choppy session ahead of expiry, auto and PMI data

Powell Returns to Capitol Hill for Second Day of Testimony
Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell returns to Capitol Hill today for the second day of his semiannual testimony on monetary policy , addressing lawmakers on the House Financial Services Committee. Yesterday, Powell told Senate lawmakers that although the odds of recession “are not elevated,” he said that it was “certainly a possibility” as rates climb, but that he believes the U.S. economy is "very strong” and will be able to handle tighter monetary policy . He reiterated his stance that the aggressive rate hikes are necessary because “it is essential we bring inflation down.” Powell also highlighted that some price increases are beyond the Fed’s ability to control, such as the recent rise in gasoline and oil prices, fueled by global forces. Yesterday, President Biden called for Congress to suspend the federal fuel tax for three months to ease prices at the pump for U.S. drivers. Powell said the central bank would continue its rate hike campaign until it sees clear … [Read more...] about Powell Returns to Capitol Hill for Second Day of Testimony
Sustainable Investing From The Advisor’s Perspective
The Supreme Court is expected to issue a ruling this month that could curtail the Biden administration's efforts to rein in greenhouse gases, and its impact could weaken the federal government's power to oversee wide swaths of American life well beyond climate change. The upcoming decision on the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) climate oversight in a case officially known as West Virginia v. The Environmental Protection Agency, could provide conservative justices on the nation's highest court an opportunity to undermine federal regulations on a number of issues, ranging from limiting greenhouse emissions, drug pricing, financial regulations and net neutrality. At the root of the case, critics of federal government oversight, including 27 Republican state Attorneys Generals and critics of the EPA, who say that it is "unlawful for federal agencies under the president's supervision to make major decisions about industry regulations without clear authorization from Congress." … [Read more...] about Sustainable Investing From The Advisor’s Perspective
Technical View | Nifty forms bullish candle, consolidation continues ahead of June F&O expiry
The Nifty once again succumbed to selling pressure in late trade and closed 0.21 percent lower at 15,799 on June 29, a day ahead of the monthly expiry of June futures & options contracts. The index formed a bullish candlestick on the daily chart as the closing was higher than the opening levels. Overall, it has moved in the 15,700-15,900 range since the start of the week. The range has to be broken decisively on either side for a direction, experts said. "Albeit Nifty50 appears to be consolidating between 15,900 and 15,700 levels, it generated a sell signal on our twin momentum oscillators post- Wednesday's price action," Mazhar Mohammad, Founder & Chief Market Strategist at Chartviewindia, said. Apart from the supplies emanating from the bearish gap zone of 15,886 and 16,172 levels, the 20-day simple moving average (15,912) appears to be capping the prices for the last three sessions. Unless the index closed above 15,927, strength should not be expected, he said. … [Read more...] about Technical View | Nifty forms bullish candle, consolidation continues ahead of June F&O expiry
Oil rises as stockpiles at biggest US hub fall to 2014 low
- A + A (June 29): Oil rallied for a fourth day as a government report showed US stockpiles dropped last week, exacerbating global supply concerns with shipments from Libyan ports suspended. West Texas Intermediate rose as much as 2.4% to trade near US$114 a barrel. US crude stockpiles fell 2.76 million barrels last week, according to an Energy Information Administration report Wednesday. Inventories at Cushing, Oklahoma, the largest storage hub in the US, fell to the lowest since October 2014. Data for two weeks was released simultaneously after an outage last week. Compounding market tightness, Libya's state oil company suspended shipments from two key eastern ports, while Iranian media said talks to revive a nuclear deal that could boost the country’s supply ended Wednesday with little effect. Those curbs to supply come as Shell Plc said spare energy production capacity is running very low, and the … [Read more...] about Oil rises as stockpiles at biggest US hub fall to 2014 low
ECB gets inflation whiplash as Spain at 10%, Germany slows
- A + A (June 29): European Central Bank policy makers preparing for the first interest-rate increases in more than a decade were handed conflicting signals on the inflation they’re trying to curb, as price growth unexpectedly hit a record in Spain while easing off in Germany. Energy and food costs drove Spanish inflation to 10% last month — defying government efforts to curb it and raising pressure on Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez. In Germany, meanwhile, cuts in fuel duty and discounted public-transport tickets helped slow the surge in prices. “It’s a question of waiting until July 1 when we have the consolidated number for the whole of the euro area, and we’ll see — because we are data dependent,” ECB President Christine Lagarde said in Sintra, Portugal, referring to both sets of data published Wednesday. “We need to do what we have to do, which is to bring it back to 2%, and we shall do so.” With the measures implemented in Berlin being temporary in nature, … [Read more...] about ECB gets inflation whiplash as Spain at 10%, Germany slows
Crashing Stock Markets Can Provide Opportunity For Longer Term Gains. But Do You Have The Stomach For It?
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Sir John Templeton was a twentieth century American-born British investor, banker and fund manager. He entered the mutual fund market and created the Templeton Growth Fund, which averaged growth over 15% per year for 38 years. He once said, “To buy when others are despondently selling and to sell when others are avidly buying requires the greatest fortitude.” Warren Buffett also once said that it is wise for investors to be “fearful when others are greedy, and greedy when others are fearful.” Easier said than done, I hear you say. How do you keep your head around you when everyone is losing theirs? Thinking contrarian has always been a great strategy and one which I have employed extensively over the years. Naturally, to be honest. Thinking differently to the crowd requires patience, discipline, and very little emotion. These are traits that sometimes have to be wired (or indeed forced) into your brain. Especially when you … [Read more...] about Crashing Stock Markets Can Provide Opportunity For Longer Term Gains. But Do You Have The Stomach For It?
